The Hidden Witch | Molly Knox Ostertag

Aster and his family are adjusting to his unconventional talent for witchery; unlike the other boys in his family, he isn't a shapeshifter. He's taking classes with his grandmother and helping to keep an eye on his great-uncle whose corrupted magic wreaked havoc on the family. Meanwhile, Aster's friend from the non-magical part of town, Charlie, is having problems of her own -- a curse has tried to attach itself to her. She runs to Aster and escapes it, but now the friends must find the source of the curse before more people -- normal and magical alike -- get hurt.

Fun second installment in this graphic novel series. Aster is finally learning how to use his powers as a witch and must help protect his new friend from a shadow creature.

4.5🌟 I truly enjoyed this 2nd book in the series. It has an excellent message against bullying and once again expresses the importance of being true to yourself. I've already put the 3rd on hold at the library so I can read it as well.

As luck would have it, this was my #BookSpin for this month! @TheAromaofBooks

Aster lives in a world where only women can be witches, and make magic users are shapeshifters. He has always felt a pull toward being a witch, though, not a shapeshifter. After working hard to earn his family's recognition as a witch last volume, Aster puts his experiences to use in this book as a tool for helping others heal through understanding. I enjoyed this volume just as much as the first. #comic #magic #LGBTQ #LGBTQAuthors

I like this book. I‘m just uneasy about aspects of magic in the story. Like when Mikasi (the villain from the 1st book) has his magic/memories/pain drained out of him, in an effort to heal him, it feels wrong. He doesn‘t have the right to hurt others, but he‘s remembering things his family did to him, surely he has a right to those memories and that pain, that magic?

Molly Knox Ostertag's The Hidden Witch, the second in The Witch Boy trilogy, is the perfect second book in the trilogy. In book 2, Aster has now joined the women in his community in lessons to perfect his identity as a witch. He joins his non-magical friend Charlie who has befriended a new student at her school. The new students seems merely to be shy, but there's much more beneath the surface. ⬇️

UnabridgedPod That nuance and depth is my favorite element of this series--each character offers depths beyond what's expected and challenges the status quo of the community. This gorgeous graphic novel centers on characters who are discovering and defining their emerging identities in the face of challenges from the mainstream within.⠀

What books have you read that focus on outsiders?

Read this for #scarathlon #teamslaughter 3 pts: 1 for reading it, 1 for witches, 1 for participation! It was a cute young readers graphic novel and I'm definitely interested in reading the first one and any other ones that follow!

Well, I just read this in one sitting. Molly Ostertag always makes me cry, though this one was a little bit less dark than the first (which was amazing and utterly heartbreaking). Molly is so good at tapping into really genuine feelings. This very neatly nutshells how I remember feeling from about 5th grade onward, though I don‘t think I ever verbalized it that well. Definitely need to find the next one!

This was another good GN by Ostertag! I was really happy to see Aster learning more magic, making new friends, and helping others out when they really needed it. I can‘t wait for the 3rd installment!!

The weather was bearable today. Got to read outside for a bit. I love Ostertag‘s work! This is the sequel to The Witch Boy. The characters growth was very satisfying. This book is essentially about bullying, friendship, and compassion, with some magic thrown in.

In this book a young witch uses her powers to get back at people who have wronged her. There are some interesting thoughts on what happens when the bullied becomes the bully.

I love Aster and Charlie! Aster is learning how to be a witch and helping his grandma cure her brother. Charlie has a new friend at school, who is just an awful person. There's a magical shadow that is terrorizing the school. And one of the shifters has decided he doesn't want to shift anymore, he wants to go to normal shool. There's a lot happening in this book and it's so good! #graphicnovels #witches #shapeshifters

Mehso-so

Better then the original but it still makes me uneasy about the animal shifting magic (spirit animals aren‘t for anyone but native Americans just stop). It does have a good message about being yourself and friendship though.

Giving it a try to see if it fixes some wrongs. But not holding my breath. I love it but the whole spirit animal thing soured it for me 🙃

Quick read of the sequel to the graphic novel “The Witch Boy.”

This one seemed to revolve a lot around forgiveness and second chances, something I admit I struggle with. It was refreshing to see kids caring about each other in these ways though.

Excellent follow up to The Witch Boy, this time dealing with bullying. Great for middle grade readers.
