Fire and Blood: 300 Years Before A Game of Thrones (A Targaryen History) (A Song of Ice and Fire) | George R.R. Martin
Set 300 years before the events in A Song of Ice and Fire, FIRE AND BLOOD is the definitive history of the Targaryens in Westeros as told by Archmaester Gyldayn, and chronicles the conquest that united the Seven Kingdoms under Targaryen rule through to the Dance of the Dragons: the Targaryen civil war that nearly ended their dynasty forever.

I finished this long audiobook. It was just another history before Game of Thrones. I did enjoy listening to the audiobook. I rated this book a 3 out of 5 stars

This is a history book written in-world by one of the archmaesters of the Citadel in Westeros. It covers nearly the first 150 years of Targaryen rule, summarizing the life and reign of each king and their families, starting with Aegon‘s Conquest and ending with the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons.

With many ambiguous elements around what might‘ve happened behind closed doors, this book is truly enthralling for fans of Westerosi lore.

I was surprised by this series stat! Also I‘m still salty about the fact that this is only Vol. 1 of 2 (and who the f knows when GRRM is going to finish another book).

Some of the other series I started, finished, or revisited: Red Rising, Infernal Devices, Last Hours, ACOTAR, Saga, STEMinista, Lore Olympus, Heartstopper, Cormoran Strike, The Atlas, etc.

Storygraph October Wrap-up!

I finished 9 books during October, including the tagged book, which was my highest rated at 4 stars.

Moods skewed towards funny and dark (usually my top mood is emotional), due to the books I choose for #Scarathlon.

Audiobook time was much higher than pages read due to finishing the 26 hour Fire & Blood and 19 hour False Witness.

For November, I am focusing on comfort reads and #BOTM backlog books.

Readers should be aware that this is written in the format of a history compiled during Robert Baratheon‘s reign, so it isn‘t a straightforward narrative like ASOIAF series. Also it‘s only volume 1 of 2, so you are only getting the first half of the Targaryen history of Westeros. I did enjoy the audiobook since the narration by Simon Vance is great, but it will feel incomplete given this volume ends shortly after the Dance of the Dragons. 4🐉

Kimberlone The section of the book “The Dying of the Dragons” is the part that the GOT spin-off House of the Dragon is based on. No spoilers, but the title does tell you plenty about what is likely to happen during the upcoming war known as the Dance of the Dragons. 1y
vivastory I still have 2 episodes remaining in season 1 of House of Dragons. My feelings on the series so far have been pretty mixed. 1y
Kimberlone @vivastory I enjoyed it, but there‘s definitely been some major issues with the pacing and time jumps. If things move forward how I think they will next season I think some of those issues will naturally work themselves out, so I am still cautiously optimistic. I‘m definitely over the gratuitously over the top traumatic birthing scenes though (there‘s another one in the finale :/ ) BUT DRAGONS! 1y

23-31 Oct 22 (audiobook)
I have had this on my shelf since publication but was only inspired to read it after watching the first few episodes of House of the Dragon.
I enjoy the worlds Martin creates - he writes strong women, nuanced characters and is sympathetic to the role of mother, queen and wife. He also writes a great deal of sexual and physical violence.
I found this, like the Game of Thrones books, entertaining and a little addictive

I think I need to come to the realization that this type of fantasy just isn‘t for me. Or rather, GRRM isn‘t for me. My brain was on auto pilot trying to finish this. There are just too many characters and houses to keep track of that it all becomes headache-inducing.

Reggie He does this zombie novelette that is heartbreaking. But you‘re right. I only made it through one Game of Thrones book because of all the houses and names. 1y

Without going into spoilers for those who haven't seen it, anyone else find the pacing of HoD incredibly weird? We are now nearly halfway through season 1 & I literally have no idea where the story is heading. Plus the significant time jumps between episodes, yet the characters have literally all of the same concerns and worries? It feels very disjointed to me.

Endowarrior21 YES LOL I am so confused lol 2y
vivastory @Endowarrior21 I'm glad I'm not the only one 🤣 2y

persephone1408 The story that they're telling, the dance of the dragons, starts when the king dies. This is the set up, as it were. 2y
vivastory @Jess There are aspects about the series that I like & I'm going to stick with it, but def kinda bugged about it 2y
vivastory @persephone1408 That makes sense. Hopefully they will end the year long time jumps between episodes once the story gets going. 2y
persephone1408 @vivastory I'm just wondering if it'll be this season or not. 2y
vivastory @persephone1408 I think I will read the book soon to give me a better sense of it📚📚 2y

Branwen Are you enjoying it though, despite the clunkiness? I am still really mad about how the last season of Game of Thrones ended and I decided not to sink any more time into a show! 😂 That being said, I really really love the book, Fire and Blood! ❤️🐉 2y
vivastory @Branwen I think I might like it more if Rings of Power wasn't on right now which I am loving. I have watched every episode of both shows & so far I have enjoyed every episode of Rings of Power more 😂 I AM looking forward to the spinoff that they will be doing focusing on Jon Snow though (edited) 2y

I'll admit that I went into this without realizing it wasn't written like the GOT books. I started and was a bit confused, but intrigued. Once I got that Martin was writing this like a history book I was all in. 😁 All of the similar names do become a bit maddening, but the family tree helps.

Any fan of this world needs to read this. It's so detailed and informative. And the illustrations are gorgeous.

All I can say is wow! I have so many thoughts about this book but I cant really share them all. So I will say...
Game of thrones=House of the dragon + dragons. It's the same story but different people with dragons. It seems that history will alway repeat itself. It was very confusing cause it seems they all have the same name, but gory and still entertaining all the way thru. My only annoyance is that this new show is gonna be another one of those

This was by far the best book to come from the author! It was so engaging & unputdownable. It reads beautifully like a true history text & most of the characters are really interesting. My only grievance is the choice of the names Elmo Tully & Kermit Tully, which did spoil the effect somewhat at being a true fantasy epic. Not sure what possessed him to choose such names but not his best decision. Overall definitely one I recommend to others.

Enjoy!

LiseWorks I'm sorry you didn't like it. It was written like a historical book. I love the game of thrones both the books and the TV series. Yes I admit it was long and perhaps too much info but the history behind it is critical in my view. It is not confusing if you have kept up with the series. George Marten gave an interview recently and says why he wrote it this way. 2y

I'm a little bit conflicted about this book. On the one hand, it was very interesting to read about the Targaryen history. On the other, it was extremely confusing to read about a couple having 14 children, 4 of them named Aegon, and only 3 living to be adults. It was also sort of dry...even the telling of someone being tortured was rather uninteresting.

This book was long! If you are a fan of Game of Thrones, it is a must read. It is a long history of the Targariens, lots of Lord's names to get through, lots of gore and death. Every time a dragon died I cried. I know it's ridiculous, but they didn't do anything wrong lol. This is Hard Fantasy #NSR221 @Nessavamusic
