The Study of Animal Languages
The Study of Animal Languages: A Novel | Lindsay Stern
16 posts | 8 read | 21 to read
"An exuberant, wise, and darkly funny novel from an essential new voice in fiction." --Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney, author of The Nest This astonishing first novel tells the story of a married couple - both experts in language and communication - who nevertheless cannot seem to communicate with each other. Ivan is a tightly wound philosophy professor whose reverence for logic and order governs not only his academic interests, but also his closest relationships. His wife, Prue, is quite the opposite: a pioneer in the emerging field of biolinguistics, she is bold and vibrant, full of life and feeling. Thus far, they have managed to weather their differences. But lately, an odd distance has settled in between them. Might it have something to do with the arrival of the college's dashing but insufferable new writer-in-residence, whose novel Prue always seems to be reading? Into this delicate moment barrels Ivan's unstable father-in-law, Frank, in town to hear Prue deliver a lecture on birdsong that is set to cement her tenure application. But the talk doesn't go as planned, unleashing a series of crises that force Ivan to finally confront the problems in his marriage, and to begin to fight - at last - for what he holds dear. A dazzlingly insightful and entertaining novel about the limitations of language, the fragility of love, and the ways we misunderstand each other and ourselves, The Study of Animal Languages marks the debut of a brilliant new voice in fiction.

Thank you Jenny ❤️ I‘m making an assumption this is from you as the receipt is in AUSD!! This looks really interesting and I‘ll be getting to it very soon (hopefully! You know how these things work)
Thank you again 😘 it‘s such a boost in the day to get lovely book mail.

JennyM Glad it arrived... one more coming. This is full of quirky academic professors, so I thought it might raise a smile for you (or you might throw it at the wall if you recognise too much of work in it) 😁 6y
TrishB @JennyM 😁😁 on a good day I really appreciate working with quirky academic professors! I‘ll make sure it‘s one of those days 😘 6y

I spent most of my day reading with #TwinkyToles. We enjoyed the book...well, i did. Twinky couldn‘t care less, he was just enjoying the warmth and waiting for food.

I now want to know what happened to Ivan and Prue. 😔

The weekend his wife, Prue, is giving a talk that is expected to cement her tenure, Ivan is stuck ferrying his Father-in-Law down for the event, as well as caring for his niece. But with his FIL off his meds and Prue‘s lecture landing like a bombshell, Ivan desperately tries to hold his marriage and his life together. This debut novel was slight but well-written and fast paced and reminded me Anne Tyler‘s novels.

JennyM I really loved this book - great for a debut, too. So glad you enjoyed it as well 😊 6y

I‘m feeling a bit under the weather today, so this is what my Friday evening will consist of. I‘ll be crocheting the teddy bear for my lil nephew (he‘s expected sometime in the end of August). When I take breaks from crocheting I‘ll be reading a bit as well.

CouronneDhiver Exciting! I have a little niece coming soon 👶🏽 6y
TheBookAddict @CouronneDhiver 🙌🏽 yay for baby nieces and nephews on the way! 😆 I can make an extra teddy bear and send it your way if you‘d like...if this one turns out. It‘s my first time making a 🧸. 6y
CouronneDhiver Aw, that‘s so sweet. 🥰🥰 Let‘s see how you feel about this one and, if you‘re feeling brave enough to do another one, we‘ll connect. I always admire people who are talented at crafting ... so much patience! 6y

#LibraryBookHaul

I went into the library to return books and renew 2 (which I had reached a renewal limit on). So, naturally, I came out of there with more than 2 books... 😔 I only didn‘t come out of there with more books because I‘m waiting for my holds to come in. I‘m supposed to be reading the books from my collection, but I just can‘t leave the library empty handed. 🤦🏽‍♀️

I picked this up on a whim, and wasn‘t expecting much based on the mixed reviews I‘d seen. However, this might be my favourite book of the year so far. It‘s poignant, yet sneakily quite funny, and in doing so manages to reflect the murky complexities of human relationships, particularly family. Stern has such a lovely way with words, I absolutely loved it 🐦 ☂

Cathythoughts Great review 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 6y

I'm not big on novels about marriage, if you do this is a pretty good one. Mostly a story about how if you're opposites that attracted you need good communication for a healthy relationship and avoiding misunderstanding.

JennyM This is next on my list this week...but I‘ve seen quite a few meh reviews. 6y
mreads @JennyM I hope you like it, it's well written and it's a quick read. 6y
JennyM @mreads fingers crossed - will let you know. And if anything, I love the cover 😊 6y

Saturday....or in our house, library day 📚

Trashcanman Hi Jenny! I wish I could hug you. That is all. 🤗😊 6y
JennyM @Trashcanman hi George - virtual hugs back 🤗. How are you doing this week? 6y
Trashcanman @JennyM I'm the same. My aunt isn't doing well and is going to die soon. She's the only extended family I've known. I have a new job, and I like it a lot. It's just, well it's always something. And I know that's just how life is. Everyone else seems able to handle it. I was born defective. I just, well I'm too emotional. I hate my life and I want to die. But I have a responsibility to my kids. So I won't. 6y

JennyM @Trashcanman I know it feels dark and like there‘s no way out, but you are important and deserve to be here. Truely. Have you seen your therapist this week? - I remember you saying she was good. We‘re here with you George❤️ 6y
Trashcanman I'm going to see her tomorrow, she's great and gives me perspective. She helps so much. I just know the eventuality will be that I die at my own hands. Please no I don't say this with pride. Or glorify death, how I wish I was normal. How I envy all those who can deal with the ups and downs. And not be weak like me. Not be so broken, and so fragile. There are some people that life wasn't meant for, I feel I am one of them. 6y
JennyM @Trashcanman I‘m glad you are seeing her tomorrow. Try and be gentle with yourself. Sending you love George xxx 6y
erzascarletbookgasm Don‘t mean to butt in, but hugs to you @Trashcanman 🤗 Hope things get better. 6y
JennyM @erzascarletbookgasm 😘 to you Jessie 6y
Trashcanman @erzascarletbookgasm it's not Nutting in at all. I respect you, and I appreciate your kindness and Jenny's. I'm a broken record and I'm sorry for that. I dot mean to bring you two down. You've been very kind. It means more than you know. 6y
JennyM @Trashcanman nothing to be sorry for, George. I just wish we could support you in person. Let me know how things are for you after tomorrow xxxx 6y

This is the story of Ivan and Prue who have spent their lives studying linguistics and communication and unfortunately have seemed to miss the boat when it comes to themselves. Through the book their are scenarios they cannot seem to get themselves out of. I thought this book was good in some areas but to me it was a little lacking. I like to get immersed in the characters themselves and I never quite became invested.

Meh. The characters weren‘t likable and the story wasn‘t engaging. There were some interesting themes but it all fell flat for me. Definitely not one that will stick with me. Pretty cover, though. #ARC #24in48
