The Highly Sensitive Person
The Highly Sensitive Person | Elaine Aron
Are You A Highly Sensitive Person?Do you have a keen imagination and vivid dreams? Is time alone each day as essential to you as food and water? Are you "too shy" or "too sensitive" according to others? Do noise and confusion quickly overwhelm you? If your answers are yes, you may be a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP). Most of us feel overstimulated every once in a while, but for the HSP, it's a way of life. In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Elaine Aron, a clinical psychologist, workshop leader, and an HSP herself, shows you how to identify this trait in yourself and make the most of it in everyday situations. Drawing on her many years of research and hundreds of interviews, she shows how you can better understand yourself and your trait to create a fuller, richer life. Updated with a new Author's Note, including the latest scientific research, and a fresh discussion of anti-depressants for HSPs, this edition of The Highly Sensitive Person also includes: Self-assessment tests to help you identify your particular sensitivitiesWays to reframe your past experiences in a positive light and gain greater self-esteem in the processInsight into how high sensitivity affects both work and personal relationshipsTips on how to deal with overarousalInformation on medications and when to seek helpTechniques to enrich the soul and spirit"Elaine Aron's perceptive analysis of this fundamental dimension of human nature is must reading. Her balanced presentation suggests new paths for making sensitivity a blessing, not a handicap." Philip G. Zimbardo, author of Shyness"Enlightening and empowering, this book is a wonderful gift to us all." Riane Ensler, author of The Chalice and the Blade

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

For some reason, I didn‘t know if this book would apply to me. Then I answered “True” to many questions on the self-test and ended up thinking, “Wait, YES!” to quite a few sentiments throughout the whole book (although of course not everything resonated personally). There was a lot of beneficial information to help me better understand and appreciate myself, others, and our culture.

ICantImReading Many sections reminded me of other work that has had a stronger impact on me, like “The Origins of You” by Vienna Pharaon, “Quiet” by Susan Cain, and Myers-Briggs assessments. 1y

Meh. Don‘t feel like I got much out of this read. My mind kept wandering as I was listening, which is not like me. There‘s a lot of self reflection that‘s better suited to a print or digital copy for easier reference, but aside from feeling like I have a really thorough overview of HSPs in a variety of environments, I haven‘t walked away with any strategies that I feel are really useful to me. Going to try a different audiobook on this topic.

There was a lot of interesting information throughout the book. Some sections seemed to go on longer than I thought was necessary. I definitely think the author has done a lot of good helping people understand the Highly Sensitive trait. I know I am a HSP and I think a few other members of my family are as well. This book gave me a better understanding of who I am.

I started this one yesterday and I‘m up to chapter two. This book is really speaking to me. I discovered Aaron when I watched the movie sensitive the other week. So many aha moments from it.

LiteraryinPA I agree. A lot of this book really resonated with me. 4y
Darklunarose @LiteraryinLititz it really is interesting. The day after I watched the movie hubby watched it. We think out whole house has this trait, which backs th likely hood of genetics. 4y

Hmm, the first few chapters are really interesting and they do make you look at your shyness/anxious/introverted self in a more positive light. The inner child stuff and some of the spiritual mumbo jumbo made me roll my eyes a bit but on the whole a very helpful book. 👍

This book was “assigned reading” by my therapist (it‘s like she knows me!). I feel a little bad that I didn‘t get much out of it though. I scored really high on the HSP self-test at the beginning and was excited to read about misfits like me, but the only chapter I could really relate to was the one about thriving at work. I also had a real problem with her hokey garbage solutions. (e.g. Don‘t take life-saving meds! Just smile more and drink tea!)

MidnightBookGirl Umm, tea is great, but so is medicine. 6y
hgrimes @MidnightBookGirl For sure! Tea is great for things that don‘t require medication. 6y

An eye-opening journey started for me recently after discovering about this book on a podcast and then reading it. Books and an intentionally-directed reading life can be life-changing. I really need to read this again and again. Dr. Aaron, herself, my colleague, is also a HSP. I truly thank and appreciate her.

“Overarousal is hard. There‘s just no getting around it. ...Still, living life aware of death makes sense to me, provided it increases your appreciation of the moment. When the awareness is too intense, you can always enjoy that handy universal defense called denial. And let your friends or family gather around you to help. They have faced or will confront these questions someday, too.”

MrBook @BookishMarginalia They used to around here, and then they changed the policy for some mysterious and inexplicable reason a few years ago. I tell them I'm looking at bottom-shelf books and they usually let me be 😆. 8y
MyNamesParadise @MrBook @BookishMarginalia I've always sat at my Barnes and Noble. No one has ever told me I couldn't, but I didn't ask anyone either lol. I could see where in big cities or something they wouldn't want people to sit. The one time I was in Strand a guy was laying down taking up all of one of the many aisles though. haha!! 8y
bookishkai @MrBook I was at my local B&N yesterday and was happily sitting on the floor in sci-fi when a young man came by browsing. I gathered up my books and made small talk about sitting on the floor to evaluate your purchases. He laughed and said he was about to do the same thing. When I swung back by in my way out of fiction he had a pile around him on the floor. 8y

I got to discuss this book with my amazing, wonderful sis-in-love while my girls played with their precious baby cousin. At one point, I said, "I dunno, I'm kind of a nerd." Without missing a beat, she responded, "Who, you? You like books and reading?! I had no idea!" ??

My nephew likes books, too, just the squishy kind...and in his mouth.

This book! $2.99 on Kindle today. I can't even choose a quote to share because I'm so feverishly devouring it. The Highly Sensitive Person is not necessarily an introvert or mentally ill. I am so thankful for this book, only a chapter in, so I wanted to share it while the deal was still on!

RinaBrahmbhattBarot I'm getting this. Thank you for recommendation 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 8y
saresmoore @MyBookSwapClub I read a LOT of psych/self-help/brain books and this one is the perfect combination of revelatory and beneficial. Her research methods remind me of the diligence of Brené Brown & Susan Cain. 8y
BookishFeminist Thanks for telling me about this deal! Been meaning to read this for a while. :) 8y

saresmoore @BookishFeminist I think you will benefit greatly from it! Your Litsy posts are clearly marked by a deep empathy that (I'm learning) is specific to HSPs. I'm glad I purchased it because I'm note taking and highlighting like a fiend! 8y
LauraBeth @saresmoore - I was half listening to today's podcast, WSIRN while cooking dinner - did Anne talk about this book? 8y
BookishFeminist @saresmoore 😂😂 you've caught me! Are you a HSP too? I have physical symptoms from mine so it's not fun sometimes. It's why I've been meaning to read this. :) I'm looking forward to it! 8y
Suet624 This book was so helpful to me as well. 8y
RinaBrahmbhattBarot @saresmoore our likeable authors in self help domain is very similar :) 8y
saresmoore @BookishFeminist I am, indeed! And she addresses the physical symptoms. I'm just getting over an all-night panic attack, actually. (No blame to the book, though!) 🙃 8y
saresmoore @Suet624 I was actually thinking of you in reading this. I think what I referred to as introversion in an earlier post was really HSP characteristics. Parenting can lead to a LOT of overstimulation! 8y
saresmoore @LauraBeth I'm embarrassed to admit that I don't know any podcasts! 🙈 The book has been around for about twenty years, I think, but because it deals with such a groundbreaking concept, it's as relevant as ever. 8y
BookishFeminist @saresmoore Oh god, I'm sorry! Those are the worst & I hope you get some coffee today. I have panic disorder too so I'm all too familiar with the toll those can take. Glad to know another HSP! We can commiserate 😂 8y
saresmoore @BookishFeminist Thank you! I will press on, but it is certainly nice to know I'm not alone! 8y
Suet624 @saresmoore yes, I can see that. And yes, lots of overstimulation. I remember having to "take to my bed" after too much work/kid time. My nerves would be shot from the overwhelm. And as a child, school was extremely difficult. I was always alternating between stunned and numb. I took the most sick days in my class every year. The feelings of everyone around me impacted me. I was/am so sensitive to others emotions. 8y
saresmoore @Suet624 You are undoubtedly Highly Sensitive! That reads just like my life story, as well. 8y
LauraBeth @saresmoore I went back and listened to it again this morn with my full attention - you may enjoy listening to it because she talks about this book in addition to selecting books to read if you're a highly sensitive person (for example - her and her guest discussed that they couldn't read books like The Kite Runner and The Glass Castle). It was a good discussion: http://modernmrsdarcy.com/59-episode/ 8y
saresmoore @LauraBeth Thank you for sharing! 8y
BookBabe Thanks for telling us! I just bought it. Saw the title some time ago and thought it would be worth the read. I'm very sensitive myself. 👍🏻 8y
saresmoore @BookBabe I hope you benefit as much as I am! It is nice to feel understood, or at the very least, to understand myself. 8y

Hey Litsy friends, are some of you Highly Sensitive like me? I could really use a pick-me-up and some advice right now.. 😓

BookishFeminist I have never been diagnosed as "highly sensitive" but I have severe anxiety disorders & an empathetic ear. What's going on? Can I help? 8y
BlueMonday42 I am. Blessing and curse at the same time. 8y
QueenAnne @BookishFeminist I usually don't like to post things about it on social media, most people (my family included) don't understand. But I figured at Litsy, I'm probably amongst likewise people. I've been in hospital for 2 days now (asthma), haven't been able to sleep properly because of patients 8y
See All 62 Comments
QueenAnne @BookishFeminist snoring and coughing and beeping machines. I'm on an "acute hospitalization" dorm and that means patients coming in in the middle of the night. I've slept 6h in the last 2 nights, it's starting to get to me and I don't know what to do or wheter to say something about it to the staff 8y
BookishFeminist @QueenAnne I totally understand- Litsy is full of wonderful non-judgmental people. I'm so sorry to hear you're sick. Insomnia completely sucks. I have terrible insomnia too at times. Is it hard to sleep with others in/near your room? Someone/something specific? Whatever it is, it won't last forever! 8y
QueenAnne @BookishFeminist I feel selfish if I would talk to the nurses about it, but I'm suffering. It's tearing me down and I've been crying a lot, especially when they reeled in 3 new patients last night at 02:00/04:00 (full lights on, beeping sounds, loud voices). Have you got some advice for me? 8y
BookishFeminist If I were in your shoes I would definitely say something to the staff. Perhaps they could offer a temporary sleeping medication while you're in hospital that will allow you to sleep. (Ignore previous comments- I hadn't seen your second post yet!) 8y
QueenAnne @BlueMonday42 yes that's true, I tend to see it as a blessing, but sometimes very overwhelming 8y
QueenAnne @BookishFeminist thank you, that might be a good idea. I guess I just feel insecure and sometimes I need someone to tell me it's okay. I will talk to the nurse about it. Thank you😘 8y
BookishFeminist I'm sure you wouldn't be the first person who has had sleeping difficulties in this situation, and to recuperate you need your rest & I am sure they would understand. It isn't selfish at all to ask for something to help your health. They may be able to make accommodations. 8y
BookishFeminist It is totally okay! And normal/valid to feel insecure--it's not the typical situation & you're with a bunch of sick people and busy nurses you don't want to impose upon. You're welcome & I hope you can get some sleep! ❤️ 8y
BookishFeminist If they end up not being able to accommodate you in some capacity & you're still having difficulties, hit me up. I've loads of insomnia tricks that may help. (Such as asking for a sleeping/eye mask if they have one!) 8y
Kat.Kao *raises hand* I'm so used to people dismissing me for "overreacting" and "taking things personally" that it can be hard to self-advocate. @BookishFeminist's advice is dead-on. It's smart and brave that you asked for help. 8y
QueenAnne @BookishFeminist you are absolutely right, I am here to get healthy and if I cannot rest it won't do me any good. Next chance I get I will talk to the staff about this, thank you very much for setting me straight and comforting me! 8y
QueenAnne @Kat.Kao I'm really glad now that I asked, I'm so used to hiding it (my family doesn't understand and doesn't like me for it) that I forget myself. And that puts me in harms way, mentally and physically. So I will make sure to say something this time and be brave about it 8y
BookishFeminist @QueenAnne Anytime & feel better soon! Sending positivity your way, and also seconding what @Kat.Kao said about being smart/brave to ask for help--it's hard to do that, esp when you're in a bind! 👍🏼 8y
KrisConstantReader Hang in there! I suffer from chronic pain and at times it gets the best of me and gets me down. It's hard to stay positive when you never feel well. Just hang on until the better days, they always come eventually 😊 8y
LauraJ I used to work in an acute ward. The nurses can't really help with the noise/lights, but a big part of an RNs job is to be a patient advocate. Let them know what you need. It's their job to take care of you. Most nurses would be happy to call the doctor and get you med for sleep. 8y
QueenAnne @KrisConstantReader thank you, I will. I'm sorry for your pain! Hopefully better days for you too! 8y
QueenAnne @LauraJ thank you, this makes me feel better. Because I was solely focusing on not being a bother to them or others, but you are right. Talking doesn't hurt and who knows maybe they have a (simple) solution, never hurts to try. Thank you! 8y
Mayread Others have said it, but never feel guilty about being your own advocate, especially when it comes to health & safety. I don't know what solutions they can provide, but earbuds so you can listen to relaxing music or a book on tape might at least alleviate the stress a bit. Good luck! 8y
QueenAnne @Skiles thank you! 8y
shawnmooney I have nothing wise to add to this lovely chorus of wisdom; I do, however, want to send along some encouragement! 8y
QueenAnne @shawnmooney thank you! Thank you all very much 😄❣ 8y
MyBookLife I've been spending quit a lot time in hospitals, and sleep medication is very common! I always take it. Sometimes it's hard to sleep anyway, but it helps. And when I come home I usually sleep for days 😆 8y
MyBookLife You should never not ask in a hospital! I don't know how it works there, but here you have to tell them what you want. They very rarely ask or offer if you don't tell them what you need. Maybe 8y
MyBookLife (Disregard the maybe in the end!!) 8y
QueenAnne @MyBookLife yes you are right, after breakfast this morning I sat down with one of the nurses and told her everything. Besides it being nice to vent, they offered me another room (no late night new patients) and sleep sedative. They also keep tabs on me, I feel so much better and calmer, thanks all! 8y
Casmt Try to remember when you're tired its hard to think straight. You are a patient too! Speak up to find help. As long as you're polite the worst case response is "No sorry, we can't". I have an anxiety disorder and really struggled in hospital after having my baby. Must look after yourself! Be kind. 8y
MyBookLife @QueenAnne I'm glad they listened and could help you!! Hopefully you'll sleep better tonight! I always say, you're not at the hospital to make friends. Not that I'm nasty or mean, but I will nag until I get what I need, and a lot of nurses understand that! 8y
QueenAnne @Casmact yes you are right, in that way I should be more selfish. I'm just so used to hiding myself, it's hard to break the habit, but I'm glad I spoke up today 8y
Casmt Yes definitely, well done. I wasn't taught to stand up for myself. More, you get what you're given and don't stand out. Not what I'll be teaching my kids or my friends! 8y
MyBookLife @Casmact That is not how I was raised, but that might be stating the obvious 😂😂 8y
Megabooks I'm glad you talked to your nurse! You are your best advocate. That is important to remember. I've been hospitalized 13 times, 3 times for 4 days including some step down ICU. Plus I'm on the other side as a veterinarian. Know that each of those patients are receiving individualized care and you are 8y
Megabooks Not responsible for them. The nurses' and doctors' jobs are to care for each of them equally & they will. We became medical professionals because we care. I care too much, which is why I left private practice. 8y
Megabooks Also, if you continue to have concerns about you mental health, most hospitals have social workers you can talk to as well. Take care and enjoy your new room. And don't be afraid to speak up. You're there to get better! 8y
QueenAnne @Ebooksandcooks yes exactly, and in my head I make it so much bigger than it has to be, because they did not find it odd at all that I felt that way, they even told me I should say something the instant it happens. And that's a lesson for me 8y
[DELETED] 3558467437 @QueenAnne I am so glad you reached out and your Litsy friends were there for support! I am happy you spoke with your nurses and I hope you are in a better situation now. 👍🏻💤 8y
Megabooks @QueenAnne Being hospitalized is never easy. I'm glad they're being so responsive. We're here for you! 8y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Glad you have (and we all have) Litsy as a safe place to reach out. Hope things are getting better. Sending you lots of love 💕 8y
Karli You have to self advocate when in the hospital. My dad was recently hospitlized and has aphasia. If family wasn't there he wouldn't have eaten I was a total pain but he needed care. I hope you're doing better and can get home soon! 8y
Chessa Sending you positive healing and good sleep vibes! So great that you asked for what you needed - I know how hard that can be! 8y
Laura317 There is so much wonderful advice above, (I love the Litsy family) that I will just add that I am praying that you get sleep and that your anxiety eases. I've been where you are. Good for you on speaking up! 8y
LauraBrook Chiming in late, but I'm also a highly sensitive person and have issues w anxiety and insomnia. My parents understand (they're sensitive as well), but most of my friends don't, esp my peers. Nurses I've talked to over the last 3 years (& I've been in a few) have all said some version of "you're not 8y
LauraBrook Here to sleep, you're here to get better" and I always wanted to slap them. You need sleep to get better! (I should add that's nurses in hospitals I'm talking about.) It's hard to remember/recognize that your needs/wants matter too when we're so used to suppressing them& staying quiet. 8y
LauraBrook Any time you need to talk about any of this stuff, feel free to DM me (we can do that here, yes?) Or post a note and we'll figure out a way to get in contact. Take care, you are not alone! And how awesome and supportive is this place?!? I Love LITSY!!!!! 8y

Stephanie-Anne A late response, and maybe redundant, but I'm Highly Sensitive too and wish I could be there to help you! I am also a clinical professional, so I know the sleeplessness you speak of is VERY common. Tell your nurse, your doc, and social workers are wonderful patient advocates. They should make... 8y
Stephanie-Anne ...your insomnia and anxiety part of your care plan. Ear plugs? Sleep mask? Hopefully you will be home soon. Bless hospitals, but they are not places for rest. Let us know how you are doing 😗🙂 8y
