He has the power to render us happy or unhappy; to make our service light or burdensome; pleasure or a toil. Say that his power lies in words and looks; and things so slight and insignificant that is impossible to add and count ‘em up: what then? The happiness he gives, it‘s quite as great as if it cost a fortune.
The misery with them all was, clearly, that they sought to interfere, for good, in human maters, and had lost the power for ever.

The chain he drew was clasped about his middle. It was long and wound around him like a tail; and it was made (for Scrooge observed it closely) of cash-boxes,keys, padlocks, ledgers, deeds, and heavy purses wrought in steel.
Christmas tradition, read it every year

Getting into the Christmas spirit.

I love the stories in this book. If you like shorter reads this is the perfect book for the season.

I love Dickens but still haven‘t read his possibly most famous work! It is now on my #tbr stack for #december.

#FaveXmasGhost #christmasCarolBuddyRead #christmasCarolReread Phantom is my pick-I love the drama of a speechless specter who commands the reformation of an inflicted man's soul😜

@KVanRead is doing a buddy read with A Christmas Carol starting next Wednesday. Who‘s in?

I saw a few Litsy readers posting this book and it looked so beautiful I had to get a copy. I'm going to dive in, after I make myself a coffee that is. 😊

hmmmm think this is the best I could come up with for #BooksandBells, the day 6 prompt for #DecktheShelves- my current holiday read, plus my bell earrings. 📚 🔔🔔

This is probably my favorite beginning to any book. The second paragraph is for real funny.

“There are some upon this earth of yours,” returned the Spirit, “who lay claim to know us, and who do their deeds of passion, pride, ill-will, hatred, envy, bigotry, and selfishness in our name , who are as strange to us and all our kith and kin, as if they had never lived. Remember that, and charge their doings on themselves, not us.”
~Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol

(This is the best adaptation of A Christmas Carol, ever.)

I've seen so many film versions, but I've never actually read A Christmas Carol. 😳 Seems like a good time to start! And I didn't know Dickens had two other Christmas stories. Has anyone read The Chimes or The Cricket on the Hearth?
