Kids of Appetite
Kids of Appetite | David Arnold
The bestselling author of "Mosquitoland "brings us another batch of unforgettable characters in this tragicomedy about first love and devastating loss. Victor Benucci and Madeline Falco have a story to tell. It begins with the death of Vic s father. It ends with the murder of Mad s uncle. The Hackensack Police Department would very much like to hear it. But in order to tell their story, Vic and Mad must focus on all the chapters in between. This is a story about: 1. A coded mission to scatter ashes across New Jersey. 2. The momentous nature of the Palisades in winter. 3. One dormant submarine. 4. Two songs about flowers. 5. Being cool in the traditional sense. 6. Sunsets & ice cream & orchards & graveyards. 7. Simultaneous extreme opposites. 8. A narrow escape from a war-torn country. 9. A story collector. 10. How to listen to someone who does not talk. 11. Falling in love with a painting. 12. Falling in love with a song. 13. Falling in love."

Sometimes I read a book and immediately add it to my reread list - this was one that I read back in 2018 and have been meaning to reread ever since. I enjoyed it just as much this time around. It's a story that “should“ annoy me, but I found myself once again completely rooting for this mismatch group of kids. Vic's journey to find some semblance of peace with the death of his father could have been cheesy and eye-rolly, but instead is genuine ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) and thoughtful. Arnold's decision to give Vic a rare physical condition is another aspect that could have come through as gimmicky, but instead is presented so well that it made me want to look up more about it. I'm old-fashioned so I'm still not a fan of swearing in YA, and I would have liked to have understood at least a little more from Vic's mom's perspective, but I also felt like the concluding conversation between Vic and his ⬇ 3y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) mom set them on a believable path of reconciliation. An excellent coming-of-age novel that deals with grief so very well, this one is staying on my shelves.

TW: We know there's a murder at some point from the first chapter. While short and not intensely graphic, I did find the actual murder later in the book to be somewhat disturbing. However, it's a very short scene.

For Day 19 of a book from my shelves with random thoughts, we've moved past Anderson (don't worry, I have more of his books on other shelves) and to a book I just bought the other day. I read this one a few years ago and really liked it, so I have had my eye out for my own copy for a while. It's on my #BookSpinBingo list, so I am hoping it will come up for a reread in July!

alisiakae I have this audiobook but haven‘t listened to it yet. 4y
TheAromaofBooks @4thhouseontheleft - I only read it once and it's been a few years ago, but I remember being surprised at how drawn into the story I was. 4y

I have owned this signed book for over a year & finally read it. This ya story reminded me a little of a John Green Book because there‘s a lot of creative terms used by the characters (such as the title & Super Racehorse). A teen with facial paralysis has lost his father & is grieving the changes at home. He runs out & starts spending time with a found family who have their own traumas. Enjoyed the characters, esp Coco.

A group of misfit kids function as a family and "adopt" Vic, who is dealing with the death of his father and the impending marriage of his mother. Vic and the "Kids of Appetite" run around town to fulfill Vic's dad's last wishes for the spreading of his ashes, and they end up getting involved in situation that lands them getting questioned by the police. An endearing read. I will definitely check out Arnold's other books! ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

All 3 of these authors are local to Ky (one‘s from Cincinnati). I had met David Arnold a couple of yrs ago, but the other 2 are new to me. They had a great discussion, along with Brittany Cavallaro, & signed books. These are not their newest books, just the ones I picked. They were all interesting people, check them out!

Listening to someone perform all 100 recitations of "I am a Super Racehorse" is by far the strangest thing I've experienced in an audio book.

MelAnn I would imagine so. In the book All Our Wrong Todays there is an entire chapter that all he says is “F**k” & and the audiobook narration did that really well - it was hilarious by the time he got thru it. 7y

I loved David Arnold's first book Mosquitoland ( LOVED) and this book is 'infinitous-ly' better! It is about family, biological and chosen, friendships, first love, sacrifice, trust, truth, life, heartbreak, death, choice, faith, goodness, honour, growing up, saying goodbye. Everything. In one beautiful, amazing book.
All the feels. All the stars.
It was good.

Appropriate for Bail Day that it would happen! I don't want to discourage anyone from reading this as text because the story is cool, but the narration is horrid on the #audiobook. Both narrators can only do one voice. ☹️☹️ I will likely revisit as an ebook!

B.Reader Good to know! 8y
DGRachel Narrators really can make or break a book. There are books I've read in print that I cannot bear to listen to because of the narrator, but others that I never would have read if it hadn't been for the audiobook. 😊 8y

I feel like I need one more relatively easy book before I go back to Henrietta Lacks and start Small Great Things. Counting on you to do as well as Mosquitoland, Arnold! 😉😉

Also I finally started Giant Days 1 and also picked up Lumberjanes 1 in my effort to try graphic novels/comics. In fact, I think I'll switch to that now!

faelinwolf Lumberjanes is one of my favorites! So fun & positive & friendship focused! 8y

What a beautiful story! I like how it's linear and it's not. The characters are awesome, the love is not limited to teenagers falling in love, the story will stay with you. I want to hang out with these kids. You can, if you read the book. #kidlitsy #youngadult

#seasonsreadings2016 Day 1: #wanttoreadindec is this ARC and many others! I'm not a huge e-reader reader, but we are going to be on the East Coast visiting family for half of both December and January. I will need to read, but can't pack too many books! The solution? ARCs. I get a bunch from the bookstore I work at. I'll read them and then leave them in Little Free Libraries or in the airport.

I couldn't sleep, so I read. This book gripped me. I loved all the characters, the family the outcast kids built. Vic needs help. His father is dead, his mother has a boyfriend, and he can't cope anymore. One night he takes his father's urn and runs for it. This begins his story- the adventure of fulfilling his father's wishes. Along the way he becomes part of a group, accepted in a way he never thought he could be. I adored this book.

“And when the kids needed someone most, someone to love and trust, they found one another, and they called themselves the Kids of Appetite, and they lived and they laughed and they saw that it was good.”

Baz shrugged. “We are all part of the same story, each of us different chapters. We may not have the power to choose setting or plot, but we can choose what kind of character we want to be.”

“Hogwarts is definitely the shit, though,” said Mad. Coco nodded. “Oh, Hogwarts is the shit.” “With the Cornish pasties and treacle tarts and all.” “I don‘t even know what the frak a Cornish pasty is, and I still want one.”

quote
Garabrandtreviews

(on why Coco doesn't go to school) "You gotta have moms and dads to sign shit. Plus, an address. What, I should write Eleventh Greenhouse on the Right, Maywood Orchard, New Milford? Might as well add Cupboard under the Stairs while I‘m at it. It‘s a public school, not Hogwarts. I‘d get laughed out of the building.”
