Could have been a four or five star read, but the second half made it so-so. There was great writing and thoughts about grieving an imperfect person, but the dark tones and unnecessary animal abuse made me sick to my stomach.

Well, mostly green anyway! I've heard nothing my but great things about A.S. King but I've yet to read any of her titles. When I do get to her this will be the first.

I really liked Reality Boy, so I was really excited to read this one. It was okay. It had some of the same dark tones that the author used in Reality Boy, but I found this one to be a bit repetitive and a little slow in parts. Overall, not bad - I think I was just expecting it to be like Reality Boy too much. That being said, I‘m turning in for the night 😊 #24b4monday

Andrew65 A shame the book was not better. 5y

And who are you calling a monstrosity? Please. You should have seen this mountain when the quarrymen finished with it in 1905. It was like a pile of shale shit. Seriously—you don‘t know the meaning of eyesore.

It was Mandie‘s turn to host our monthly literary salon last night. (I love the way she uses her nail polish as decor.) Mandie chose the evening‘s theme: prosopopoeia, which means in the voice of abstract or inanimate objects. I chose to read some passages from the pagoda‘s point of view in the tagged novel.

Fordham is having the young adult author AS King to the campus in Manhattan on Oct 2. Join us? She's fantastic--and Mary Higgins Clark will be there! It's free but registration in my comment. I'd love to see you! NY Litsy Meet-up? @ScientistSam @Jokila @MrBook @MommaBeja #litsymeetup

EloisaJames Link for registration (make sure they have enough cupcakes for registration!) http://bit.ly/MHC-ASKing-2017 7y
CoffeeK8 This sounds amazing! Wish I could make it, but I live a little too far away. 7y
Valink Do you teach at Fordham? I'm going to the open house there in October with my kids. My daughter is a senior and my son is a junior so the college search is in full swing! 7y

MommaBeja @EloisaJames sounds like fun. And there's cupcakes! #litsymeetup. 7y
MommaBeja @EloisaJames when I was a kid Mary Higgins Clark was one of my go to reads. 7y
brownem @EloisaJames I am dying to attend, but it's my brother who lives in NYC. #tradingplaces 7y
EloisaJames @Valink I do indeed! I'm a Shakespearean. Are you coming to the Lincoln Center campus? If you are, on a Monday or Wednesday, I could meet you guys and give you an insider's take. 7y
minkyb Oh, what a great event. Will forward this to my daughter! 7y
Jokila Ooh I might be able to make it! I don't work that Monday!! 😏 7y
EloisaJames @Jokila fabulous!! Litsy meet-up at the reception! 7y
EloisaJames @MommaBeja Mary HC is incredibly amazing. Elderly but hasn't forgotten anything! 7y
Jokila How's it feel to be called "sexy" in the NYT Book Review? ? 7y
EloisaJames @Jokila I'm not enthusiastic--but better than being told my characters aren't black enough! Grrr 7y
Jokila I couldn't believe that!!!!!!!! Much about this article's publication is unbelievable 🙄 7y
MommaBeja @EloisaJames the bigger problem is that someone green lighted the publication of that nasty piece of work. 6y
Valink We'll be at the Rose Hill campus. She wants a real "campus" feeling from whatever school she attends. She plans on visiting the NYC schools with her friends eventually. She has NYU, Manhattan, & Hunter in her list. It wouldn't surprise me if she adds the Lincoln Center campus to her list if she likes the school. 6y
EloisaJames @Valink hi there! There's a big difference between campuses in terms of feeling and kids. My daughter isn't sure which one she wants yet. 6y
Jokila @MommaBeja seriously. Someone explain to me why we needed the genre mansplained to us. What was the *point* of this piece?? 6y
MommaBeja @Jokila @EloisaJames because we are mere women without thoughts in our head. We need to be guided like sheep 🐑 by men of intellect 6y
MommaBeja @Jokila @EloisaJames I am still besides myself that his hateful spew got past multiple people through to publication. Didn't NYT think that some of those women who adore romance read the NYT or would read this article for love of the genre? Didn't believe we would not balk or fight back with intelligence? 6y
EloisaJames @MommaBeja from what I've heard, the head of the Review favors "hate reading" as she thinks it makes for more exciting reviews (or something). From that point of view, Gottlieb didn't fulfill her brief. 6y
MommaBeja @EloisaJames that's awful 6y
RLW @EloisaJames Do you know if this event be available on-line (streaming or released later)? I'm not in NYC this week, but would love to view, if possible. 6y
ScientistSam Wish I could! I have a work thing tonight. Maybe next time. 6y
EloisaJames @RLW I don't know, sorry! It depends on the speaker. 6y
RLW @EloisaJames I looked on the website but didn't see an indication. I'll check after the event and see if it's posted. Appreciate your response. Thanks. 6y
EloisaJames @Jokila it was so great seeing you—thank you for coming! That was such a great talk—I can‘t stop thinking of it. 6y

Once again, King hits it out of the park with a story that will sadden you, anger you, make you laugh, and make you want to punch someone. Pure gold.

Thank you so much @BraveNewBooks for my awesome package! I absolutely love Nancy Drew and use to play the herinteractive computer games, but need to read more of the books📖( this will provide me that opportunity). Also thank you for finishing my Mitch Albom collection.. I now own most/if not all his books and I adore the bookish socks. Thank you @Tiffy_Reads for hosting the #beachinbookswap

4/5 ⭐️! It was a little slow getting into, and I took off a star because I found the narrator a little hard to really connect and empathize with, despite her hardships, but all in all, it was an enjoyable read that I'd recommend to anyone who likes teen contemporaries. This is such a beautiful and sad book. It deals with grief and loss is such a real way. The heartbreak and even anger of it. This book shows we can overcome our destinies and maybe people are a little more complicated than we understand. It's a book full of nuisance. It's both beautiful, powerful and frustrating. The characters are all to humanly flawed just like us. Finished it this lovely morning.

Laura317 Beautiful photo and thought-provoking review. 7y

For anyone considering reading AS King or for anyone who likes oddball, magical realism tinged YA, this might be the deal for you. This is one of my top 10 favorite books published so far this century. I highly recommend it. On sale at Amazon until 11/27. Available via the link below: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003F3PK3G?ref=pe_2267260_215580790_g_2_5d20&t...

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I do like oddballs, magical realism and YA... 7y
GlitteryOtters @thegirlwiththelibrarybag seriously, too 10 favorite books of the century so far (probably top 5, actually). Highly recommended. Gets even better on rereads. Also highly recommend her newest book, these are my two favorite by her (see below) 7y
GlitteryOtters @thegirlwiththelibrarybag top, not "too" (autocorrect's newest fun feature is that it learned to like the word "too" & keeps correcting "top" to "too", possibly that means I use that word too often...?!) 7y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag When I had a slide phone, I had the autocorrect function turned off but I shudder to think how awful my typos would be on a touch keyboard without it (despite its sometimes random corrections). Top 10, big call (I'm not actually sure what would be on mine) have you had a look at book depository? 7y
GlitteryOtters @thegirlwiththelibrarybag I did have a look, but it was a quick look (my husband wants to host some friends for Thanksgiving here next week, and I am left scrambling to get the house cleaned up for company). Non-US books I looked up were out of stock. Some will be in print in US next year, so maybe they stop ordering from non-US/UK in those cases? Will need to do a deeper look in a few weeks, when my anthology is listed on their site for preorder. 7y

Vera is trying to deal with her best friend Charlie's death. It's not easy. They were best friends for most of their lives. A beautifully told coming-of-age story, with lots to think about. I love A. S. King's books! In anticipation of her new release next Tuesday, I'm making this my #Recommendsday pick.

BethFishReads I love her books. Just got the audio of her newest 7y
