A pretty good stand-alone Christie with some actual danger to the MCs. Bobby is with a dying man after they think he accidentally falls off a cliff. He & his friend Frankie start investigating after some other events.

This was one of my oldest books. It was an enjoyable story. Not quite the same like the Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple series, but there was still a mystery at its center, which I didn't guess ahead of time.

I know I asked for more plucky heroines, but I missed my Poirot! This one was cute and fun, but had almost nothing to do with golf. That cover misled me.

And thus ends my Agatha Christie week! The husband is back and I finished 8 Christies and started ABC Murders (once I finish I'll be all caught up with #agathachristieclubr2). The children refused to let me read much, so I mostly listened. Hugh Fraser and Joan Hickson are just perfection!

This one reads a bit like a farce, with some fairly ridiculous characters and a pretty unlikely plot. The tone actually reminded me a little of Cold Comfort Farm. Enjoyable, I suppose, but not one I expect to return to.

I continue to make my way through the #agathachristieclub reads in chronological order, & this surfaced as one of the Christies I don't think I've read before. It's a standalone mystery--no Marple, Poirot, or Tommy & Tuppence--& it's pretty fun. Irreverent, lively, with a fizz & zest about it as befitting a novel featuring amateur detectives of the "bright young things" era. However, the mystery itself was a bit of a dud & did nothing for me.

shawnmooney This was the last Agatha Christie I read, and the last I will ever read; in fact, let‘s go out on a limb and say it was the last murder mystery I shall ever, ever read! 🤣🤣 3y
batsy @shawnmooney Definitely not your cup of tea 😆 3y
Ruthiella I‘m not a huge fan of this kind of Christie where the crime is less solved than stumbled upon by perky young folk. Still, I enjoy the ride. 😀 3y

Billypar I've never even heard of this one! It's an odd title - I can't tell whether I like it or not. 3y
batsy @Ruthiella "stumbled upon by perky young folk"—that's a perfect description! 3y

I really enjoy when Christie writes a young woman detective. And it was nice to get back to a novel after so many short stories. This did have a couple of really ridiculous reaches but generally was a fun romp.

4. The 1980 adaptation of this novel was the first authorized adaptation in decades, after a few failed attempts during Christie's life that soured her to the idea. This lead to all the classic BBC adaptations we love today: Poirot, Miss Marple, Tommy and Tuppence. Why do you think this novel was selected? How does it lend itself well to adaptation over other, more famous works?

#agathachristieclubR2

TheAromaofBooks I haven't seen the adaptation of this one, but as a standalone it's a fun place to start because you don't have to worry about “ruining“ any of Christie's more famous characters. There are lots of disguises & shenanigans in this one, plus the dramatic insane asylum, so I can see it being a fun one to choose. 4y
ferskner @TheAromaofBooks yeah I'd agree with everything you said. It kind of feels like a soft launch rather than swinging for the fences. A lot of the early adaptations were Christie's thrillers or more comedic mysteries, and I wonder if that has to do with what was popular in the culture at the time. I don't know! 4y
janeycanuck Yup, what @TheAromaofBooks said... there‘s lots going on, some good light stuff, some@good dark stuff... and the humour would be really appealing for a lot of people, too. Plus, you don‘t have to feel like you‘re missing something if you haven‘t seen the other movies with that character. 3y

3. How do Frankie and Bobby stack up against Tommy and Tuppence? #agathachristieclubR2

Laughterhp I liked them better than Tommy and Tuppence 😬😬😬 though I might be biased because I didn‘t like the first Tommy and tuppence novel but I liked the second one I read. 4y
TheAromaofBooks Sadly I can't like anyone better than Tommy & Tuppence but I did love Frankie & Bobby's lighthearted banter. I'd love to get the four of them together 😂 @Laughterhp 4y
Laughterhp I might have to give Tommy and Tuppence another chance. I‘ve only read one book with them! @TheAromaofBooks 4y
ferskner @Laughterhp @TheAromaofBooks I like Tommy and Tuppence more but to be honest I confuse them in my head very often! Probably because the same actors play both couples. This feels like it could have easily been a T and T novel. 4y
janeycanuck @TheAromaofBooks @Laughterhp @ferskner hmmm, yes, I agree this could have been a T&T novel. I don‘t think I can decide which I like more... 3y

2. Christie uses the light tone from her international intrigue novels and applies it to a more straightforward mystery. Did you this this hybrid was successful? What other similarities did you find to her light thrillers? #agathachristieclubR2

TheAromaofBooks When Christie is being funny & snarky, that's when I like her best. I really enjoyed the somewhat absurd ideas of disguise & intrigue that our two “detectives“ pulled off. 4y
ferskner @TheAromaofBooks I do like her portrayal of the Bright Young Things so I liked that she used them for a regular mystery. I don't really like the plots of her thrillers, so I felt like I was getting the best of both worlds. 4y
janeycanuck @TheAromaofBooks @ferskner Yes, I like when the snark comes out, too. I enjoyed the lighter feel of this mystery. 3y

It's time for our March #agathachristieclubR2 book discussion! Only one week late with the questions, haha!

As always, please look at all the following posts for the rest of the questions, and please tag anyone who has already commented to keep the discussion going.

1. Did you enjoy this book? Why or why not?

Laughterhp Yes! I really liked this one. I accidentally read it in January because my list was off, but I thought this was a really good mystery and it kept me guessing the whole time. 4y
MaleficentBookDragon How can I get in on this? I‘m a huge Christie fan. 4y

rubyslippersreads I didn‘t get to this one but will try to join in this month. 😊 4y
janeycanuck I‘ve been reading the short stories released in the UK so haven‘t picked this up yet. Maybe this weekend! 4y
TheAromaofBooks I quite enjoyed this one - the fun banter reminded me of Tommy & Tuppence! @Laughterhp 4y
TheAromaofBooks @MaleficentBookDragon - We are reading through Christie's books in published order, one a month, & then have some discussion questions (some months later than others haha). April's book is Parker Pyne Investigates & May's book is Murder in Three Acts - @ferksner is in charge of the tag list & posting the questions!! 4y
ferskner @Laughterhp @TheAromaofBooks I liked this one, probably better than The Seven Dials Mystery, which I always confuse this one for. I like that it's more of a mystery than a thriller but retains the scrappiness. @MaleficentBookDragon I hope you'll jump in! You just read the book and then look for the #agathachristieclubR2 tag for questions. I'll put up the May questions shortly. 4y
janeycanuck @Laughterhp @TheAromaofBooks @ferskner Oops, I read this ages ago and forgot to come back and answer the questions... I quite liked this one, too. It did have Tommy & Tuppence vibes, didn‘t it? Also, I‘ve been reading the short stories that weren‘t published in the US and man, there‘s some overt racism that I was happy to mostly leave behind in this one. 3y

#BookReport - Pretty good progress this week. Strangely, being busy at work has led to more reading - I'm just too tired to want to do anything more difficult than sitting on the couch in the evenings 😂 Quidditch & Prince Caspian are my ongoing chapter-a-day reads & I'm enjoying both. I didn't review Defiant Dreams, which was an absolutely absurd little romance about a southern belle sent north during the ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Civil War where she falls in love with a Union soldier. The scandal! (Except not really, it was honestly a pretty boring book considering the setting.) Heartstone was really intense, so when I finished that yesterday I picked up a P&P variation on Kindle Unlimited & I feel a little binge of those coming on this week. Need to get my April reading sorted out & post my #BookSpin list!!

Another fun read for #AgathaChristieClubR2 - I really enjoyed this little romp although there were a few things that left me scratching my head haha (I'll put my biggest question in a spoiler below). This one is AKA Why Didn't They Ask Evans? and that title probably makes more sense. Not only was this my #DoubleSpin for March, it took me to my first stop in Wales (Denbighshire) for #SeparatedbyaPondTour !! @Andrew65

TheAromaofBooks For me, the real question is - Why didn't they KILL Evans?! They knew where she was & what she knew & were terrified that Bobby was going to talk to her... it just seems like the obvious solution for people who have no issues bumping people off?? 4y
Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 Wales can be the hardest to get to. (edited) 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Andrew65 - Thank you!! I was pretty excited when Christie specified where in Wales they were since she doesn't always do so! 😂 4y

#WeeklyForecast - another busy week ahead!! I'm starting new books for #PotteraDay & #NarniaReadalong & hoping to read the tagged for #AgathaChristieClubR2 (its aka is Why Didn't They Ask Evans?) I only have one short story left in Don't Look Now, but I am not sure I am going to get to my reread of Rebecca this month after all. Can't believe it's time to start reserving April reads at the library!!!

@Cinfhen

Cinfhen Woohoo!!! April #bookspin is on the horizon 🌈🙌🏻💕🎉 4y

Linsy @janeycanuck Ditto! I‘m still with y‘all! I‘m a bit behind, but I thought this month was Edgware, Evans in March. What list are you following? (edited) 4y
Laughterhp @Linsy Oh, maybe I‘m a month ahead. I accidentally read Edgware early not even realizing it. I‘m just looking online at the Agatha Christie website and I‘m skipping over the short story collaborations with other authors. 4y
janeycanuck @Laughterhp @Laughterhp I‘ve got Lord Edgeware dies for Jan, Hound of Death for Feb and Murder on the Orient Express for March. I don‘t have Evans until May... I‘m using a list from the Agatha Christie website (https://storage.googleapis.com/agatha-christie-assets/archive/pdfs/christie-reading-list.pdf) 4y
Laughterhp @janeycanuck Weird that list is a little different. I‘ve been going off of this. The Hound of Death isn‘t even on my list that I can see. https://www.agathachristie.com/stories 4y
janeycanuck @Laughterhp if you go down to the very bottom of that page, there‘s a PDF - that‘s the list I linked above. I think you aren‘t seeing Hound of Death because it‘s short stories and that‘s only showing novels? 4y
Linsy @janeycanuck i‘ve been reading off of that PDF as well, but skipping the months with short stories. Glad y‘all are still reading along with me!☺️ 4y
janeycanuck @Linsy I‘m on Tuesday Club Murders now and it‘s pretty good - though I‘m not generally a short story person. 4y

I didn‘t have high hopes for this one as I usually dislike Emilia Fox‘s narration, but she wasn‘t as obnoxious as with the Marple books, and Bobby and Frankie were absolutely delightful sleuths. They reminded me of Tommy and Tuppence, who I adore. Plenty of red herrings to keep the reader guessing as well.

An accident, suicide or murder? When Bobby finds the body of a man at the base of a cliff, the strange question posed by the dying man sends him on a quest to discover the truth. A solid Agatha Christie, with twists and turns and clues galore.

I get really annoyed with the more recent ITV adaptations of Marple. They add Marple to stories she's not in, then while they're at it they change the murderer, change the motive, add ridiculous subplots, and in the case of Evans, DELETE characters but then ADD DIFFERENT ONES. WHAT IS THE POINT OF THAT 😡 JUST WRITE YOUR OWN DAMN 1930s MYSTERIES and leave Agatha's name out of it!
#emojinov day 11: 😡

Nebklvr That seems like hiring a pro for a job and then turning it over to an amateur 7y
Rachbb3 Agreed!!! 7y
