Bodies of Light
Bodies of Light | Sarah Moss
30 posts | 20 read | 67 to read
Bodies of Light is a deeply poignant tale of a psychologically tumultuous nineteenth century upbringing set in the atmospheric world of Pre-Raphaelitism and the early suffrage movement. Ally (older sister of May in Night Waking), is intelligent, studious and engaged in an eternal - and losing - battle to gain her mother's approval and affection. Her mother, Elizabeth, is a religious zealot, keener on feeding the poor and saving prostitutes than on embracing the challenges of motherhood. Even when Ally wins a scholarship and is accepted as one of the first female students to read medicine in London, it still doesn't seem good enough. The first in a two-book sequence, Bodies of Light will propel Sarah Moss into the upper echelons of British novelists. It is a triumphant piece of historical fiction and a profoundly moving master class in characterisation.

I am excited to finally dip into Moss‘s backlist and this story of Ally, who studies to become on of the first female doctors in England, and her cruel and controlling mother made me want to stop reading anything else. I love Moss‘s writing, the beauty and the tension she created had me looking for the sequel at my library before I was even halfway through. #24in2024 #fourfoursin24 #gurneyjourney

Set in Victorian Manchester, Ally is the elder daughter of a mother who is zealous in her campaign for social reform and the improvement of life for poor women, to the extent that Ally endures a childhood of hardship and little love. Ally forges a path towards becoming one of the first women doctors, at great cost. The writing was almost perfection and I loved the exploration of social reform, feminism, female “hysteria” and suffrage.

Cathythoughts I really enjoyed this too! What a great picture 💫 3y
JillR Thank you @cathythoughts - I‘ve just seen there‘s a second book too… 3y
andrew61 I loved the books and if you read 'Night waking' ally's sister is a character which is worth reading. The final book is equally brilliant. 3y
JillR @andrew61 I have read Night Waking but it was quite some time ago and I didn‘t realise the link with May until I‘d finished this one. Am now trying to track down a copy of the sequel, glad to hear it‘s good! 3y

My second attempt at this. The writing is beautiful & the title is beautiful. How light as a metaphor is woven through this book.
I panned on Stone Wall ... the cruelty too much. I didn‘t like the cruelty in this one either. The mother ! And I knew when I read the first few pages about the stone in Mary‘s shoe. Yet , the bodies of light , the colours , the textures , the softness in the writing , make it more than cruel. I liked this one a lot ✨

erzascarletbookgasm I‘m glad you gave this another chance. I liked this and find the writing beautiful too. 4y
Cathythoughts @erzascarletbookgasm Yes, I‘m glad too. It was a random read this week & I‘m so glad ! I believe there is a follow up book ... must investigate 👍🏻❤️ 4y

rockpools I‘m so glad you liked it. I have to admit I‘d probably have been wary of starting another by her after Ghost Wall - this was the first of hers I‘d read. And that mother ☹️. The follow up is👉, but I think she‘s also written May‘s story in another novel. 4y
Ruthiella I‘ve never read any Sarah Moss! Good on you for giving the author a second chance too! 😀 4y
TrishB This is still on my tbr but will definitely be reading!! 4y
Cathythoughts @rockpools Thanks! And I‘d love to read Mays story 👍🏻❤️ 4y
Cathythoughts @TrishB Look forward you your thoughts when you get there Trish ❤️ 4y
Centique I bailed on Ghost Wall because the tension was too hard to bear as well - but I could see it was beautifully written. I‘ll have to try this one! (edited) 4y
Cathythoughts @Centique I think it‘s a very different book... the writing is ten times more beautiful I think .. I‘d love to hear your thoughts when you get there X 4y

Sarah moss creates brilliant stories out of small threads of history. In Night waking she had an parralel tale of a 19thc midwife on a remote Scottish island, in this bk we follow the life of her sister athelia who studies to be a dr despite male prejudice, a dreadful childhood/mother, + a famous painter father who fails to confront his wifes neglect. A wonderful book in which i immersed myself + didn't want to come out. Ally's tale continues 👇

andrew61 Signs for lost children and the author has a new bk due so i can't wait to read them as well as rereading The tidal zone. 4y

My first Sarah Moss and I find it an informative and remarkable piece of work. The writing is beautiful, and the story captivating, albeit rather slow in parts. Not just touching on the struggles and social prejudices of women in the 19th century, at the heart of the story, it explores family relationships, motherhood, healing and hope. Some parts broke my heart and I was invested in the main character..always a good sign of a fantastic story.

erzascarletbookgasm Thanks for introducing me to Sarah Moss and the copy of this book @Kalalalatja . ❤️ I look forward to read more of her books especially Signs of Lost Children and Night Waking. 6y

My #currentread follows Ally, who struggles against social prejudice to study to become one of the first female doctors in England. Ally‘s determination and devotion are driven by her mother‘s expectations and her hunger for her mother‘s approval, and although she is treated with harsh treatments and no love, she never gives up her dream to become a female doctor.

Mdargusch Great tie in! 6y
Reviewsbylola I‘ve heard such great things about this author. 6y
erzascarletbookgasm @Cinfhen This is a standalone novel which can be read first (it‘s my first book by Moss), but maybe @Kalalalatja can enlighten us as she loves this author and introduces me to her. 6y
emilyhaldi I love Moss but this book was tough to get through at times 6y
Cinfhen Ok, thanks!! I‘ll wait & see what @Kalalalatja or @TrishB suggests 😁 6y
Kalalalatja I started with The Tidal Zone, which was great! But this is the first in a duology, and it is loosely connected to Night Waking, which is set in our time, while the duology is historical fiction. You cans tart with both Night Waking or this @Cinfhen both are great in their own way 👍 6y
Cinfhen I‘m worried it‘s gonna be too YA @Kalalalatja what do u think ?? 6y
Kalalalatja @Cinfhen no, no not YA at all! It is definitely books for adults. Most of Moss‘ books deals with themes like parenthood (mostly motherhood), feminism, family relationships, both healthy and unhealthy. No love triangles, no teenage angst in these books 6y
Cinfhen Oooh!! Good to know @Kalalalatja thanks 👍🏻😁 6y
TrishB Definitely not YA. Night Waking really spoke to me about the juggle of small kids and trying to have a career. No such thing as a perfect mum and we‘re judged every day! 6y

Ally and May‘s mother, Elizabeth isn‘t just an #IcePrincess, she‘s the Ice Queen! Never have I read about a mom who manipulates, mentally abuse and neglects her children in such a way, while consealing it all in a presentable and charitable front. I really detest her, but I guess that‘s what makes her a great literary character.

#NoFemmeber

Kalalalatja @Moray_Reads she is the biggest martyr, and I can‘t deal with it 🙄 @Billypar definitely! I was so angry and sad on behalf of the kids/teens/adults, since she acts this way all through their childhood and into their adulthood 6y

Ally's mother, Elizabeth, is a rigid riligious extremist, always working to elevate herself to a moral #higherground. It doesn't bode well for Ally, who is unable to meet the standards set by her sanctimonious mother, no matter her success. This is a dark look at a nineteenth century English upbringing in the midst of the suffragette movement. I will definitely be reading more of Moss!!

I think this might be my favourite Moss! Set in Victorian Britain, it follows the life of Alethea Moberly, who wants to be a doctor. Each chapter starts with a description of a painting, often painted by Ally‘s father, which in some way is connected to the following chapter, which is in itself a picture of a family dealing with expectations, discipline, class and early feminism. And now I need to learn more about asylums at that time!

Two daughters of a morally imperious woman in 19th-century Manchester take different paths. One is like her mother, just as hard on her own two girls, who in turn take different paths. Artists, prostitutes, the first women to become medical doctors... there are many fascinating characters and the period is evoked in vivid details. Audiobook narrated by Meriel Scholfield.

Ally swallows. The only good thing about junket is that it goes down easily. [...] Ally's spoon bounces on her junket like a smack on a bare leg.

Lindy @Donna_sBookMinute Yes, that's exactly right. Junket tablets are rennet (an ingredient) and the pudding you make with them is also called junket. 8y

Lindy @ApoptyGina69 Wow! Popping up all over! I heard about it in a book as a child but can't remember which one. My mother assured me that it was nasty and that's why she wouldn't make it. 8y
saresmoore Ha! That's a great analogy for the spoon smack. It seems like the prevailing literary opinion of junket is aligned with your mother's, Lindy! 8y
Lindy @saresmoore In the novel, lighter moments like this sometimes include a reminder of the darker reality: Ally's mother believes that pain is a useful reminder to strive always to be perfect. 8y

It seems more like an animal than a person, and not even a pet which would purr or wag its tail to show pleasure, but an insect, a venomous insect, a reptile. Except that reptiles, she believes, are usually silent. She understands exactly why nursemaids drug babies. The baby is still crying.

saresmoore Ha! Reminiscent of Janet's feelings on babies. 8y
Lindy @saresmoore Yes, except in this case it's the baby's mother, and she's severely depressed. This part of the novel is making me very sad. 8y
saresmoore Having experienced severe postpartum depression, I can imagine it's tough to read. The fact that mothers, babies, or committed adult relationships can survive it is truly amazing. 8y

Just wonderful. A #recommendsday and #www pick - Sarah Moss - my new favourite author. I started this knowing nothing about it, and was hooked from the word go. Ally broke my heart over and over again. So much I didn't know or hadn't thought about the early days of the women's suffrage movement. This manages to pack in beautiful painterly writing and descriptions of anxiety that knock you sideways, while still being full of warmth and hope.
