Life Undercover
Life Undercover: Coming of Age in the CIA | Amaryllis Fox
24 posts | 19 read | 23 to read
Amaryllis Fox's riveting memoir tells the story of her ten years in the most elite clandestine ops unit of the CIA, hunting the world's most dangerous terrorists in sixteen countries while marrying and giving birth to a daughter Amaryllis Fox was in her last year as an undergraduate at Oxford studying theology and international law when her writing mentor Daniel Pearl was captured and beheaded. Galvanized by this brutality, Fox applied to a master's program in conflict and terrorism at Georgetown's School of Foreign Service, where she created an algorithm that predicted, with uncanny certainty, the likelihood of a terrorist cell arising in any village around the world. At twenty-one, she was recruited by the CIA. Her first assignment was reading and analyzing hundreds of classified cables a day from foreign governments and synthesizing them into daily briefs for the president. Her next assignment was at the Iraq desk in the Counterterrorism center. At twenty-two, she was fast-tracked into advanced operations training, sent from Langley to "the Farm," where she lived for six months in a simulated world learning how to use a Glock, how to get out of flexicuffs while locked in the trunk of a car, how to withstand torture, and the best ways to commit suicide in case of captivity. At the end of this training she was deployed as a spy under non-official cover--the most difficult and coveted job in the field as an art dealer specializing in tribal and indigenous art and sent to infiltrate terrorist networks in remote areas of the Middle East and Asia. Life Undercover is exhilarating, intimate, fiercely intelligent--an impossible to put down record of an extraordinary life, and of Amaryllis Fox's astonishing courage and passion.

Interesting book about the author's career in the CIA. From her recruitment, her training and her departure she discusses it all and how it affects her personally. I enjoyed it. Perfect length and level of detail.

Memoir of a woman's life in the CIA while in her 20s. I love getting a look behind the curtain of clandestine organizations.

Reading memoirs of lives wildly different from your own can be so interesting, as is the case here. I‘ve never had any desire to be a spy to learning a bit about a young woman‘s experiences of being undercover was fascinating. Of course there‘s so much she can‘t tell us, but the reality of the loneliness of such a life really comes across.

Really interesting book about Amaryllis‘ life as a CIA agent. Losing her childhood friend on an airplane bombed by terrorist was the impetus fir her to do what she could to thwart terrorists. I really liked learning about disguises, surveillance and all that other cool spy stuff. Her approach was to create relationships with the “bad guys” and get them to flip to our side.

Finished this one today as my Christmas book exchange gift with my best friend (who isn‘t on Litsy 🤫). I got my copy from the library and bought her a copy which I‘ll mail this week (she now lives in another state). It was very interesting to read about someone who entered the intelligence service so young. #memoir #nonfiction #christmasgjft

A compelling and interesting memoir. Fox a smart, and ambitious young woman was recruited by the CIA when she was only 21, dedicating her career to counter terrorism. Part self reflection part memoir of a spy. Not a tell all since she worked highly classified missions but It was interesting reading, especially when her real life started mixing with her spy life, very consequential. Appreciated reading a females perspective in this line of work.

It was fascinating to learn the life of a CIA officer. I suppose at times I expected more action, something out of a spy movie, but instead a more nuanced look at living undercover all the time. The locations, the covers, the relationships, and surveillance. The author narrates her story so you can hear it from her voice, the struggles of certain things. She is very brave and someone to admire. If you‘re into spy stuff, you will enjoy this.

RachelAmphlett That sounds right up my street! 4y
MyNamesParadise @RachelAmphlett I really enjoyed the audio! It takes me a long time to read nonfiction, so when there‘s an audio, I opt for that. It‘s very good! 4y

This was decent, but wanted more about her CIA experience and less about relationships, etc. Free space #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks #TeamSlaughter @Clwojick 6 pts

A quick but fascinating read about life as an undercover CIA operative - Fox is a remarkable woman with enormous courage and heart. By its nature, the book touches on some distressing content, and that may be difficult for some to read. However, it‘s not gratuitous and I felt it was done in a respectful way. And the sticker on my library book says it‘s being made into a TV series, which I‘ll definitely look out for.

Bookishlie Just saw her on Josh Gates Tonight so put this in my tbr! 4y
JennyM @Bookishlie serendipity! Did she interview well? Hope you enjoy when you get to it - she‘s led an incredible life 😊 (edited) 4y

I‘ve not read a lot of non-fiction this year, so I‘ve picked this one off the pile. And it is fascinating! - bet it would be good on 🎧

Centique This sounds like my dad would like it and also maybe @Cinfhen 😍 4y
Cinfhen Thanks for thinking of me @Centique xx I‘ll wait and see Jenny‘s review and #HisElderliness 🤓 4y
JennyM @Cinfhen @Centique it‘s only a short read at 200ish pages and pretty much straight into her recruitment and life in the CIA. I reckon your gorgeous Dad might find it interesting, Paula. And I think if the audio is narrated by the author herself, it would be good Cindy. I‘ll keep you posted 😘 4y

This was an interesting book. I would have loved if it went deeper into her training with the CIA and other missions. There was more on her marriage troubles and family life than actual CIA work it felt like at times.

Although I‘m usually bad at audio- being prone to distraction- I‘m really powering through this one. So far, I‘d recommend it. A coming-of-age memoir with an unusual hook. #ARC #ALC from Libro.fm

This book gave me great tips as to how to shake surveillance, develop an alias, and burn documents if needed. I thought the training in the CIA was so interesting and her humanity and portfolio of work was something to be deeply respected. I‘d love to travel the world as Fox did and enjoyed many parts of reading about her life, but couldn‘t connect with other portions.

julesG @DrexEdit come to my library, you'll want to donate a crate full of books, which, unfortunately, they won't accept. because they only accept books in mint condition and published within the last 6 months. 😑 5y
LauraBeth @LeahBergen Robert with the golden eyes 😹 5y
DrexEdit @julesG does your library not buy enough new books? 😨 Most of my read books go to the Friends Of the Library group for their booksales. Another dangerous place to go. 😊 5y
LauraBeth @julesg my library won‘t take ANY donated books. 5y
julesG @DrexEdit Oh, they buy lots of books in German, but books in English are limited to the "usual" lot (Agatha Christy, Austen, Shakespeare, Grisham, Elizabeth George, Kinsella,...). I've offered them books, but the books were about 8 months past the publishing date and, although in good as new condition, the library didn't want them. 5y
julesG Laura, that's just as awful. 5y
DrexEdit @julesG @LauraBeth wow. I confess I don't know our library's donation policy. That just seems wasteful though! 5y
LauraBeth @julesG, @drexedit I do pay the county almost $4,000 every year in property taxes and from that, the library gets a piece. Last time I checked, the county gave the libraries an annual budget of $20 million dollars - so I‘m guessing they may not need donations since they seem to be well funded from taxes. They also don‘t have book sales. (edited) 5y
julesG @LauraBeth Wow, seems like someone in your county values books and education! 5y

A fun, page turning read of Amaryllis Fox, a news correspondent and former CIA agent. From her international upbringing to her harrowing volunteer efforts in Burma, she was a the most qualified candidate to investigate terrorist activities by Al-Quaida. A great memoir told from a female voice

It isn't like the movies, Amaryllis Fox says in the early chapters of her memoir. There aren't high speed chases through city streets, jumping through civilians as the undercover agent evades their surveillance tail. She then proceeds to tell a story that is so compelling, I can't for the movie (which is, apparently, coming).

(more in comments)

ablachly Recruited out of Georgetown, Fox becomes an agent for the CIA, working under non-official cover as an arms dealer posing as an art dealer. This story about the decade she spent doing counterterrorism work is fascinating, as are all the places you see her grasp for her own identity -- who is she, underneath all the masks she's wearing? It's an exhilarating book, which never loses its humanity. 5y
