1. If dragons count as animals, then I choose The Hobbit. Smaug is my favorite critter character, and has my favorite dialogue in the book. If I have to choose real animals I'd go with Watership Down. I love those rabbits.
2. No pets currently.
3. Birds of prey
4. Only for a day? Heck, I want to be a bear for the winter! Fatten me up and let me sleep for a few months!

saresmoore I'll limit it to two recommendations, each comprehensive and gorgeous in its own right. The Firefly Encyclopedia of Animals has a vintage nature journal feel; it's illustrated. The tagged DK Smithsonian has stunning photographs and TONS of interesting facts.

BookInMyHands I love to buy nonfiction for my kids. The fiction they read fast so we mostly check it out from the library, but this book my son goes back to again and again.

Nebklvr The Scholastic "Who Would Win" series are short, fun, and interesting. Shark vs killer whale, etc. 7y

Nebklvr Also, books like "Dewey" the library cat are good. I hate it when the animal dies so I stay away from the war dogs 7y

This is an animal book done right. The best picture by far is the swimming crocodile. A favorite things is the “worthy” sections. Are they Selfie Worthy? Besty Worthy? Very well done Animal Planet.
