Girl: A Novel | Edna O'Brien
23 posts | 24 read | 26 to read
Girl, Edna OBriens hotly anticipated new novel, envisages the lives of the Boko Haram girls in a masterpiece of violence and tenderness. I was a girl once, but not anymore. So begins Girl, Edna OBriens harrowing portrayal of the young women abducted by Boko Haram. Set in the deep countryside of northeast Nigeria, this is a brutal story of incarceration, horror, and hunger; a hair-raising escape into the manifold terrors of the forest; and a descent into the labyrinthine bureaucracy and hostility awaiting a victim who returns home with a child blighted by enemy blood. From one of the century's greatest living authors, Girl is an unforgettable story of one victims astonishing survival, and her unflinching faith in the redemption of the human heart.

A fictionalised story of one of the school girls kidnapped by Boko Haram. I knew this was going to be a difficult read, but I really struggled. The fist third of the book feels like a collection of gruesome stories about what extreme misogyny and religious fanaticism can take us. It makes difficult to connect with the character since there's no personal details outside the horrors that she's enduring. ⬇️⬇️

nanuska_153 I think Edna O'Brien did a great job researching and interviewing these girls and she didn't want to leave any of their horrors untold, but perhaps it would habe been better as non-fiction.Although if that was the case, probably the girls wouldn't have felt safe sharing their stories with her, specially after seeing how ostracized they are the ones that survived, which is dealt with also in the book.So I respect and understand the author's decision. 2mo
nanuska_153 Overall I'm glad I read it, because these stories, or should I say realities, need to be told and we need to listen. Victims deserve their voices to be heard. 2mo
Suet624 I seem to remember I started this one but only got halfway through it. 2mo
nanuska_153 @Suet624 yeah it's a really difficult book. I read it for a bookclub, don't know if I would have finished it if it was just me 1mo

Okay. So I have very strong feelings about white women taking the trauma of other cultures and monopolizing on it. I will full on admit I made a mistake and when I bought this I did not realize it was written by a WW. She then was long listed for the Women's Prize so I thought I would give it a chance. I really wish I had followed my instincts.
While some of her language is nice the story line is scattered & overall felt like trauma porn.

Hooked_on_books I reading a book of essays at the moment and the titular essay talks about the idea of white people co-opting the pain of prejudice. The author tells a story in which racial slurs are thrown at her on a train then a white friend with her starts crying, saying that had never happened to her before. It‘s upsetting that people would turn something around and make it about themselves. 4y
ChaoticMissAdventures @Hooked_on_books this looks fantastic. Thank you. I am going to order it. I think it is so hard to get these types of books right, for me the Girls in O'Brein's book are not concepts or far past people, but alive and still suffering women - capable of writing their own story. I don't see a reason for an Irish white woman to write this book. 4y

A story of the taking of 276 girls by Boko Haram in Nigeria told by Maryam, a fictional character. The writing and style was not really for me and this is not an easy read, but I couldn‘t turn away from the appalling story and how Maryam was then treated after her escape. And the fact many of these girls remain missing.

I had an Edna O‘Brien reading fest here starting with her first book; The Country Girls, her memoir; The Country Girl and finishing up with; Girl her last book. The first two provided delightful insights into Ireland of the 1950‘s and all three give voice to women who had been stripped of all but silence and screams. Girl is the fictionalized story of one of the kidnapped school girls in Nigeria by the Boko Harem. #ReadAroundtheWorld #Ireland

charl08 I loved the memoir, especially her account of her childhood. I'd like to read more by her. 5y

This novel is based on the story of the schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram in Nigeria.

I nearly bailed early on due to the horrific details of rape/violence but it‘s important that we acknowledge and learn about such atrocities so I persevered...HOWEVER the book was written in a very detached manner, which made the whole thing feel very distant and almost clinical - there was no emotion. A shame, as I feel the impact was lessened.

rockpools This was recommended to me on @lele1432 ‘s #NewYearWhoDis list - same topic, different viewpoint. Of course I haven‘t actually read it yet ... 5y
BarbaraBB I often feel this way with O‘Brien. She touches upon important issues yet it feels detached indeed. For example with this one. 5y

veritysalter I know The Leeds Library is a subscription library, do you know if you have to live in Leeds to buy a membership? 5y
squirrelbrain No, not at all @veritysalter - I worked round the corner when I first joined. Now I‘ve left that job I can‘t go as often (I‘m in Harrogate so not TOO far away). It‘s open on a Saturday morning and until 7pm on a Thursday. The newer books are 3 week loans, but the others are all 12 weeks and you can get up to 30 at once! 😁😮 Whereabouts are you? Let me know if you want to visit - I can take you, or it‘s open to the public Thurs eve. 5y

A gut wrenching brutal novel based on the Boko Haram schoolgirl kidnapping. There‘s emotional uplift at the end so the reader is not left drained and exhausted. Well written.

Sapphire I have it in audio but had to take a brake. It‘s amazingly well written. But brutal is right. 5y

I know I remember the news some years ago (2014) about the kidnapping of 276 school girls. The abductors were Boko Haram. Since then, at least in Norwegian news, there have been reports about how hard it‘s for women who have been victims of sexualized violence to be accepted back to their community in certain parts of Africa.

This is a fictional story of one of the girls kidnapped by Boko Haram, about her captivity, her escape and life

AnneCecilie afterwards. My only complaint is that the ending might have been a little to happy. I‘m glad this was on your #NewYearWhoDis! list @Pricel101 since I don‘t think I would have read it otherwise. I don‘t think it gripped me the same way as you, but I‘m glad I read it @monalyisha (edited) 5y

Pricel101 @AnnCecilie lovely that you read it! ☺️ They say writers should “write what you know” that may be why I was so taken with her captivating narrative from the abducted girls POV. O‘Brien could not be more different than the characters. @monalyisha #newyearwhodis is always so much fun! 5y

A harrowing fictionalized story of the kidnapping and eventual return of Maryam, a Nigerian schoolgirl taken by military extremists on the night of April 14,2014. 276 female students were kidnapped, taken as sexual slaves and traded amongst men as war prizes and spoils. This book is extremely upsetting and many are questioning whether Edna O‘Brien has the right or is the right person to tell this story. My issue was the detachment although I 👇🏼

Cinfhen feel that was a concise decision by the author. This book reads cold, sparse with little emotion or humanity. Maryam‘s return to “home” was equally bleak. I don‘t want to ruin any parts of the book, but it‘s heartbreaking to see how society accepts and welcomes back Maryam. A pick with reservations. #BorrowNotBuy 5y

ferskner I listened to an Edna O'Brien book a few years ago and there are horrible things from it I still can't get out of my head. Part of me admires that she doesn't sugarcoat atrocities but I also wish she showed more fluidity in how she puts it all together. 5y
Cinfhen Yes @ferskner you‘re right, I didn‘t want it sugarcoated but it was just stated, without any sense of surrounding or what the MC was thinking, feeling, experiencing. And 90% of the book was written that way. I‘m sure it was intentional because it‘s such a horrible story, but I was more concerned with WHEN the book would end as opposed to HOW the book would end. 5y
Cathythoughts I think I‘d like to give it a go 👍🏻❤️stacked 5y
rockpools Sounds horrific and sad 😔. I struggled with the fact my last read all happened in my lifetime, so ‘happening now‘ is definitely going to add to the intensity. Not sure I‘m up for this in the near future... 5y
erzascarletbookgasm Horrifying! I read an interview on why the author wanted to write this book..very brave and tough of her, making those trips to Nigeria! 5y
BarbaraBB I felt the same when O‘Brien wrote about Bosnia in 5y
Kalalalatja Thanks for tagging me! I‘m keeping it Stacked, but I‘m not rushing out to get it. Great and insightful review, tho! 5y
Cinfhen Reading the blurb @BarbaraBB I can see the similarities I don‘t think you‘ll regret reading it @Kalalalatja @Cathythoughts it‘s not very voluminous and if you can persevere it could be read in one or two sittings 5y
Cinfhen I agree @erzascarletbookgasm very commendable of Edna O‘Brien to bring this plight to more readers 5y
Suet624 I was about to read this and then I realized I had read a powerful nonfiction book in which the author interviewed a number of folks fighting extremism. One of the women had been kidnapped and later tried to return home with her kidnapper with mixed results. It seemed that I didn‘t need to read a book written by a woman who had never experienced the situation. I recommend the tagged book though. 5y
Cinfhen Tagged book sounds good @Suet624 thanks for the recommendation 5y

Not the lightest of reads or for the faintest of hearts - this book is ROUGH. I‘m having to read in small doses because the horror and violence is really upsetting.

CafeMom I know her books can be raw. I have read a couple but none with violence and horror. 5y

Sace I don't have the courage to read this. 😔 5y
Chrissyreadit I think if I were to read this topic I would want non fiction so I could have more facts about the plight and emotion. It‘s so crazy that we live in the best of times and the worst of times. 5y
Cinfhen This book reads like a memoir @Chrissyreadit but it is fictionalized, which makes it better in some ways or worse. It‘s true/ we do live in troubling times 😭😭😭 I‘m not sure why I picked this book up @Sace @Megabooks because this is a topic that really guts me. I‘m taking it slow and hoping the end will see some sort of redemption for this young girl. 5y
Kalalalatja I wasn‘t aware of this book, but it sounds intense! I‘m interested to see what you end up feeling about it 5y

This is the story of the abducted Nigerian school girls in 2014. Insurgents disguised as soldiers break into the school to loot it. Finding no guns or supplies, they decide that “Girls will do”.. this shock sets the tone for the terrifying story of Maryam, “bush wife”, a reward, for one of the fighters. Best read of the year! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Edna O‘Brien knows how to write about women, no matter the time, place or culture.

A haunting, harrowing envisioning of what happened to one of the schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram in the middle of the night. While this book isn't necessarily a factual recounting and the content was extremely tough at times, I forced myself to continue reading because these girls deserve to have their story told. This story really puts things into perspective & shows how someone's life can be completely altered due to no fault of their own.

A terrific premise, with so much promise, but I'm afraid the execution let it down for me. The prose was very blunt, to the point of sounding detached, and given the horrific subject matter (kidnapping of Nigerian girls by Boko Haram in 2014)... I also really struggled with the friction of a privileged older white woman writing from the perspective of a traumatised young woman of colour. Best read alongside #ownvoices narratives and non-fiction.

4/5🌟 It's absolutely horrifying what happened to these girls. That this is based on true events is very disturbing. Reading this you can tell O'Brien did her research. The storytelling and writing is exquisite but I did struggle in some parts with Maryam's character. This story is filled with ghastly violence, only writers as fantastic as O'Brien could take on such an ambitious story. Out Oct 15th!
