A sci-fi dystopian short story from a collection Amazon released a few years ago. A virus wiped out most of humanity, and the story opens on a man waking from a coma. He is confined to his hospital room alone while his immunity recovers and as he gets stronger and recovers his mobility he finds that his memories begin to return. Kind of disturbing, but I liked it.

Succinct but effective

Happy Halloween! I loved Tremblay‘s novels and was hoping for a good scare with this #KindleUnlimited short- the premise of a man waking up without knowing anything was creepy but not exactly the Halloween scare I expected- still a quick and entertaining read!

I enjoy Trembly‘s work; however, this was not a favorite. I think the narration threw me off. It seems the intention was for the narrator to give a creepy presentation, but it didn‘t work for me. 😔 The premise of a man waking up with no idea who he is was interesting. I liked the strangeness of the story. Overall, it was just okay.

Another one I read last month and forgot to post here. This is the second of this short story series I've read and I'll be finishing the last three this year. This one is a disturbing combination of scifi and horror and the consent to be cloned.

This 54 page short story is part of the Forward Collection which was curated by Blake Crouch which at time of posting is available on Kindle Unlimited.

Our protagonist is nameless and wakes up in a dark room and has to relearn their past. It took me a while to figure out what was going on here and I thought this one was fine. I didn't enjoy it as much as I have the others in this collection.

Another great story in this collection. I was pulled into this story even once I had figure it out. So much fun to read these.

What has been your best quarantine read?

A man wakes up in isolation with no memory and is told that he's being kept inside because his immune system's compromised and there's been a horrible pandemic outside.

The sense of mystery was good, but the story was a little fatty and predictable, so in the end i'd only recommend this for previous fans of Tremblay's work

By far the creepiest one in this collection so far.... and sadly a bit too topical.

Once again as I have come to expect, fabulous work by Paul Tremblay! In this short story we are immersed in a patient‘s mysterious healing process as Tremblay explores the idea that we only know who we are by what others tell us and our memories, which change over time.

I really enjoyed this short story by Paul Tremblay. I wish there were more from him. I went ahead and downloaded the rest of the short stories in this collection from Amazon. Here is to them all being as good as this one! 📚❤️📚

Just finished this read that's perfect for the #IllRemember prompt. This is the first I've read anything by Paul Tremblay & it's quite astonishing the levels of dread he managed to convey in a short story/novella. A person wakes up alone in a room, trying to remember, & it's slowly revealed the condition they're in. I felt a keen sense of desolation as I read this. The confusion & the low-key creepiness felt wholly dystopic. #movember @Cinfhen

I was leaning towards two stars for most of the way through this, right up until the end...and well, you can see I upped it to four. This one has an actual ending to it, even though it was left hanging in a way it still totally worked. If you listened to it, you'll get what I mean.

So my boyfriend, my friend, and I were all reading Amazon‘s Forward Collection sort of together and we‘ve all finally finished, so I decided to see what our group average ratings were for all the stories. “The Last Conversation” came out on top for us (Woo! I need to read more Tremblay now. 😃) and, much to our surprise, “Emergency Skin” was unanimously our least favorite (I‘m a bit relieved I wasn‘t the only one with that #unpopularopinion 😅).

This was a very short audiobook that keeps you guessing as to why the narrator has insomnia. The story begins with him in dire pain. The listener expects it to be a car accident. The book would have been better if the ending were a surprise. The story is a tad too long, making it too easy to figure it out before the big reveal. In other words, the ending was disappointing. Still, it‘s an original and suspenseful short story worth a listen.

Listening to this one today while doing housework.

At first listening to this I was just comparing it slightly unfavorably to the phenomenal first season of "Within the Wires" but the ending really blew me away. You are recovering alone in a dark room. You have no memory of your life but the doctor speaking to you from somewhere else is trying to help... A haunting little dystopian tale for spooky season!

Eerie and unnerving are my thing right up there with coffee and carbohydrates. This Twilight Zone adjacent story is here to remind you that you can‘t always get what you want. Don‘t sleep on this. It‘s about the same price as a dang coffee. Tremblay is the shizzle!

I enjoyed this better than You Have Arrived at Your Destination. I found it interesting that it was written in the second person, it felt fitting for the story in order to relate to the protagonist (well, basically, the reader is the protagonist). For most of the story, you are kept in the dark about what's happening, you just know that something is very eerie about the situation.

Out of the three stories in Amazon‘s Forward collection that I‘ve read so far, this has easily been my favorite. The story moves kind of slowly, but it always kept me interested and curious about what would happen so I was never bored. The 2nd person pov worked well too and didn‘t get on my nerves like it did in “Emergency Skin.” ⬇️
