'Terrific. Unique. Never read anything like it - polemical, personal, pithy and funny.' Richard Madeley 'It doesn't surprise me that Emma has grappled with the "woman's" topic that both sexes have ignored for millennia and made it so completely un-grim, informative, and entertaining.' Rachel Johnson 'Why has it taken SO LONG for this powerful, fearless book to be written. It had to be done, and thank goodness Emma Barnett has no shame.' Emma Freud 'Brave and fearless, Emma unpacks, demystifies and fights back against the taboo to give us an open, honest and achingly funny celebration of menstruation.' Amika George 'This is a must read for everyone. Period.' Kirsty Wark 'A brilliant, informative, myth-busting, funny and poignant book.' Helen Pankhurst 'Don't be revolted, lead the revolt - preferably with a grin on your face and a tampon tucked proudly behind your ear.' Emma loathes her period. Really, she does. But there's something she loathes even more: not being able to talk about it. Freely, funnily and honestly. Without men and women wrinkling their noses as if she's pulled her tampon out and offered it as an hors d'ouevre. But somehow, despite women having had periods since the dawn of time, we've totally clammed up on anything to do with menstruation. Why, oh why, would we rather say 'Auntie Flo' than 'period'? Why, in the 21st century, are periods still seen as icky? Why are we still so ignorant about such a fundamental body process? Now, in Period., Emma draws on female experiences that will make you laugh, weep (and, most probably, squirm), in a fierce and funny rallying cry to smash this ridiculous taboo once and for all. Because it's about bloody time. Period.

#TBRPile 📚 Somehow, despite women having had periods since the dawn of time, we‘ve totally clammed up on anything to do with menstruation. Why are periods still seen as icky? Why are so many people still so ignorant about such a fundamental bodily process? Drawing on female experiences that will make you laugh, weep, and squirm, this is a rallying cry to smash this ridiculous taboo once and for all.

Took a little while to read but this book really packs a period punch to manufacturers and those who don‘t like to discuss the P word

TrishB A good read 👍🏻 4y

Tagged- funny ha ha and funny ridiculous!
I was born by the river! (And I was)
Winter- because only international footie in summer.
I don‘t want to single anyone out - just to say I‘ve had amazing conversations, gifts and friendships from wonderful people on here. They are all equally appreciated. It really is a special place.
#friyayintro

Lindy I shouldn‘t have been so surprised by your answer to the sports question, knowing your fondness for footie, but I was taken aback because I interpreted the question differently: do I enjoy *participating* more in winter or summer sports. Answer: 🥌(only sport) 4y
TrishB @Lindy 😁😁 I‘d have drawn a blank then! As I don‘t actually participate in any anymore! (edited) 4y
Lindy @TrishB I think of curling more as a social activity than a sport, but my doctor said it is too much exercise while my brain heals. I am clear to go back next week. 4y
TrishB @Lindy curling looks like fun! Glad to hear you‘re getting the all clear next week 👍🏻 4y

Funny, yet hard hitting and intelligent look at periods in today‘s society(s). Specifically at the silence surrounding them and the shameful tinge attached to them.
Some of the stories #makesmelol - #booked2020
Also #feminism #jennyis30
And #readwithmrbook - #1wordtitle (will repost later in the month!)

alisiakae This sounds like a book I would really like. 4y

Day 1 of #nfnov and book 1 finished!

I *bloody* loved this book and couldn‘t put it down. I read half on the train to work this morning and told everyone about it at work. It‘s funny, heartbreaking, anger-inducing. You have to read this book - all the stars!

#TIL
It took Fitbit over a decade to introduce period tracking to its health app.... and then the system actually limited periods - ‘currently a period must be less than 11 days‘ 😧😡😬

TrishB Stacked 👍🏻 currently hard cover cheaper than kindle 🤷‍♀️ 4y
squirrelbrain I nearly bought it for your birthday @trishb but I hadn‘t read it yet - didn‘t know how good it was! I got it from #netgalley only a couple of days ago so it might still be on there.... 4y
DGRachel That Fitbit note is irritating. I mean, I certainly wish I never had one that lasted more than 11 days, but just because an App doesn‘t think it should means my body listens! 🙄(Oh, and STACKED!) 4y

squirrelbrain Isn‘t it just @DGRachel - and there‘s even more irritating things in the book, but I don‘t want to spoil it. I could seriously keep posting all night about it.... 4y
DGRachel It kind of makes me think of the migraine tracker app I have that sends me notices every few hours saying”you‘ve been having a migraine for 72 hours. Are you feeling better?” No. If I was feeling better I‘d have said so, stop rubbing it in” 😆 4y
rsteve388 There is a migraine tracker app?! What?! Also 4pts! 4y
TrishB I have some birthday (book!) money. I will be choosing carefully 😁 4y

My first #nfnov post....

So this made me laugh out loud on the train.... we‘d rather tell our bosses we have ‘the shits‘ rather than period pain.

On a more serious note the author goes on to talk about how, in many cultures, a woman with her period is still shunned.

The section on Orthodox Judaism was truly shocking - women can wipe themselves with a special cloth, then send it to a rabbi who will confirm that their period has finished.

LazyDays It's so ture, men don't understand the pain we can feel so it's embarrassing to try and explain. Saying I have diarrhea is alot easier because that's the end of it. They understand and empathize, but you feel judged for something you should be use to. I completely understand why its easier to say you have the runs. 4y

I enjoyed the first part of this book very informative and honest.
The second part of this book was a bit slow, she tries to make it more funny which just fails considering the book is about not making fun of periods! #readingthelibrary #librarybooks #periods #Femanist #reading #books #femaleauthor #female ♀️📚🔴

My library never has anything about periods it's crazy and it drives me so mad!
