The Listeners | Leni Zumas
10 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
Leni Zumas's haunting debut novel, The Listeners, depicts a family struggling with loss and faced with the difficulty of honoring a loved one's memory while letting go of grief. Hypnotic and profoundly disquieting, The Listeners explores a far-out world where a patchwork of memory, sensation, and imagination maps the flickering presence of ghosts. This is the story of a woman whose life is shaped by tragedy. Quinn is thirtysomething, a survivor of a fractured and eccentric childhood marred by the death of her younger sister. Twenty years later, she is in the midst of a decade-long slide down the other side of punk-rock stardom after her successful music career was abruptly halted. Sassy and smart, tough but broken, Quinn is at loose ends. She develops unique strategies for coping, but no matter what twisted tactic Quinn conjures to keep her psyche intact, she cannot keep the past away. The Listeners is about what lurks in the shadows and what happens when what's lurking insists on being seen. Leni Zumas portrays a world twisted on its axis by loss, in all its grotesque beauty. From the first line the prose is glorious: pricklingly honest and hallucinatory, a lucid dream world realized. The Listeners marks the debut of a major American writer.

I loved Red Clocks, so I thought I would give this backlist title a try, and it‘s a hard no. The writing is bizarre to the point of nonsensical. What it does tell me, though, is to give an author a second chance, since every book is different.

Texreader Very true although that can be so difficult if the first book you read is gosh-awful. 2y
Hooked_on_books @Texreader For sure! It‘s much easier the other way around. 2y

My #WeekOne points for #LittenListen aren‘t spectacular but I managed two books on audible which is better than nothing! Both novellas were only 5hrs so that‘s 10pts plus another 10pts each for a square on #bookspinbingo Hopefully next week will be stronger, Scribd has a habit of “temporarily” taking away all the audiobooks I want to read right now, which is highly annoying. Not sure if it‘s worth the sub actually🤷🏻‍♀️

aperfectmjk Do you only use Audible and Scribd? If so, if you have a library card, you should try Hoopla or Libby. I find soooooo many titles FOR FREE to listen to. This is often how I decide whether or not a book is worth buying. 3y

I love my #audiobooks, but I also love #podcasts This one has really resonated with me. It's by two children's authors (see above) If you enjoy children's books, picture through YA, if you are looking for more diversity in your reading, if you want to fall in love with a podcast, this is for you. #teachersoflitsy #librariansoflitsy #raisingreaders #mgbuddyread https://player.fm/series/lifelines-books-that-bridge-the-divide

1. On a computer or my phone 😐. Sometimes coloring, or crafting. Sitting outside in warmer weather.
2. No audible. Usually library (Hoopla, Overdrive, and cloud library) Sometimes physical.
3. Sped up if possible.
4. I don‘t know if I have a definite favorite. Usually women though :)
5. .... I don‘t know if I can nail down one. I will have to look and see and mention a couple in the comments.

It's #audiobookbliggersweek! It's been almost two months since I've posted anything on my blog, but I can't let this week go by. I ❤️ audiobooks and the bloggers who write about them.

margreads Maybe i should write a blog post about audio books this week too. 8y
Eliza-beta Please do! #audiobooks 8y
audiothing I'd forgotten all about it until you reminded me. Wasn't sure if I'd signed up or not so just wrote a post. Won't be posting for the Tuesday question as I don't travel any more. I was thinking we need some vibrant topics, unfortunately can't think of a single one 😔 8y
