Mobituaries
Mobituaries: Great Lives Worth Reliving | Mo Rocca
23 posts | 26 read | 18 to read
From beloved CBS Sunday Morning correspondent and humorist Mo Rocca, an entertaining and rigorously researched book that celebrates the dead people who have long fascinated him. Mo Rocca has always loved obituariesreading about the remarkable lives of global leaders, Hollywood heavyweights, and innovators who changed the world. But not every notable life has gotten the send-off it deserves. His quest to right that wrong inspired Mobituaries, his #1 hit podcast. Now with Mobituaries, the book, he has gone much further, with all new essays on artists, entertainers, sports stars, political pioneers, founding fathers, and more. Even if you know the names, youve never understood why they matter...until now. Take Herbert Hoover: before he was president, he was the Great Humanitarian, the man who saved tens of millions from starvation. But after less than a year in the White House, the stock market crashed, and all the good he had done seemed to be forgotten. Then theres Marlene Dietrich, well remembered as a screen goddess, less remembered as a great patriot. Alongside American servicemen on the front lines during World War II, she risked her life to help defeat the Nazis of her native Germany. And what about Billy Carter and historys unruly presidential brothers? Were they neer-do-well liabilitiesor secret weapons? Plus, Mobits for dead sports teams, dead countries, the dearly departed station wagon, and dragons. Yes, dragons. Rocca is an expert researcher and storyteller. He draws on these skills here. With his dogged reporting and trademark wit, Rocca brings these men and women back to life like no one else can. Mobituaries is an insightful and unconventional account of the people who made life worth living for the rest of us, one that asks us to think about who gets remembered, and why.

Fascinating look at people — some you‘ve heard of, some you haven‘t — and phenomena that have “passed.” Rocca and Greenberg will tell you things you never knew about well known people and introduce you to folks you ought to know about but who get left out of history books. https://cannonballread.com/2022/09/mobituaries-great-lives-worth-reliving-elcicc...

This isn‘t something I would normally read; seems to work just fine as a podcast. But it was a #bookclub pick so I did my duty. 😂 About 2/3 of the “episodes” were excellent and the rest were just okay. Still a pick. #nonfictionnovember

Finished on my way to work this morning. Think I‘ll start listening to the podcast because I really enjoyed this book. The funniest part for me was the New Jersey visitor stops—the Walt Whitman poem had me laughing in the car. Well-researched, and I learned some history.

Megabooks This is such an enjoyable one! 3y
Scochrane26 @Megabooks I‘d heard of it before but had forgotten. I‘m pretty sure I put it on my list after you reviewed it. 3y

Mo writes interesting, informative obituaries of people, places, and things that I enjoyed learning more about! From the well known, Audrey Hepburn, to the forgotten, Vaughn Meader, Mo brings his signature style of reporting. I loved the follow ups, too. Like the Mount Rushmore of Terrible Presidents after discussing John Q. Adams‘ amazing post-presidency. Just the right amount of humor, too. I definitely recommend the #audiobook!

Bookwormjillk I think about this book every time I drive on the NJ turnpike 3y
Nutmegnc Just borrowed it! Sounds great! 3y

Cinfhen I‘m gonna check - thanks 😊 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I just checked out the podcast version…there are more in the book, but there is overlap and a few different ones that aren‘t in the book! I‘m thinking of checking it out!! Its available on Apple‘s podcasts. 👍🏻 3y
Cinfhen The podcasts are also on #scribd but not the audio!! Maybe I‘ll try a podcast and see how I like it 😁 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen yes! And you can definitely listen to an episode at a time and break it up. 👍🏻👍🏻 3y

This was a fun little audiobook. He talked about people, places, and events I didn't know about or knew very little about. It was interesting to learn about so many new things. #audiobook #scribd

Kind of hard to describe this audiobook, it's a mix of humor, history, trivia and Rocca's family history. I enjoyed it and laughed out loud several times, although most of the humor is of a gentler variety, the kind that makes you smile. 4 🎄🎄🎄🎄

My multi-tasking "read" for the past few days, this book filled the purpose I set for it -- providing some interesting and enjoyable background noise during a hectic and stressful work week! And thankfully, I'll be able to add a few points for #TeamReadNosedReindeer!

This gives entertaining capsule biographies of a big range of people from Elizabeth Taylor to Billy Carter to Thomas Paine. It‘s impossible to come away without learning a lot. Did you know that Lord Byron‘s daughter was the foundational data scientist who wrote the first computer program? Recommended for those who like to find surprises in the small corners of history. Fun and a smile are two things I would use to describe this book. I learned about Mo a few years ago thanks to his cooking show dedicated to learning recipes from grandparents. I loved his personality and attention to random details. Mo provides a well researched background on each topic he covers as well as fun side comments and stories to go along.

I used this for my Herbology OWL exam for the #magicalreadathon2020

Went on a walk today to work off this giant meal I had and accidentally went the long way while trying to social distance. At least I got to see some interesting things along the river walk.

This book wasn't exactly what I had thought it was going to be. I thought it was going to be actual obituaries, but it is not that. I've never listened to the podcast so I didn't know what to expect. This book was a little strange, and also entertaining. I learned background bios of celebrities, and some lesser known people/places/things, as well. Good book. 3 star

What an enjoyable #audiobook! I liked this more than Mike Rowe‘s sort of similar book. Both books are based on podcasts and look at historical events, people, and things from a unique angle, but I prefer Mo‘s humor to Mike‘s introspection, today, although I‘m glad to own both.

Both are also available on #scridb, @Cinfhen and anyone else. 4.5⭐️

Cinfhen Thanks, my #AudioAficionado 😘 5y
Crazeedi I started Mike's, and it went back before finished, and I want to listen to this one! 5y
Bookwormjillk I really liked this one too. I love reading about the more obscure presidents so really liked that aspect of it. I watched a few movies because of it too. 5y

I really enjoyed Mo Rocca‘s deep dive into obscure people and things that we don‘t talk about any more. My very favorite part was when he explained who each stop on the New Jersey turnpike was named after. Rocca reads the audiobook himself which was a definite plus.

Crazeedi I love him. Look forward to reading this one at some point! 5y

The only way to do this book is by listening to it. Mo Racca reads it himself, and he is delightful. The chapters are chock full of interesting facts and snarky asides. I particularly laughed out loud at the chapter detailing the “things from the ‘70s that could have killed us.” A show of hands from those who remember what it was like to roll around in a station wagon‘s “way back” and dodge impalement from Jarts thrown by your siblings? 🙋🏻‍♀️

Ruthiella I love him when he is on the panel of Wait Wait, Don‘t Tell Me on NPR.😂 Such a funny and quick guy! 5y

This was my last book of 2019 (I am so far behind on posting!!!). This was a lot of little vignettes about different things. Some were very informative, some were a little silly. But overall it was a fun book.

Yoricke_SouthAfrica I saw his interview with Trevor Noah on The Daily Show. This book sounded so interesting. 5y

Facts, tidbits, current events, history, trivia etc only wish I knew for certain that I could retain all of it and regurgitate it in the middle of conversations instead of, like Mo, remember or dream up retorts at 2am. I found the whole book completely fascinating and the segways perfect. Now, I can't be confident that I would have enjoyed it as much if I was reading it, but the audio, read by the author, is spot on and shouldn't be missed.

MallenNC I want to listen to this one. I got it from the library in print, but it‘s almost coffee table book sized, and that made it awkward for me to hold and I kept putting off reading it until it had to go back. 5y
MaggieCarr @MallenNC weird. Wonder why it was so oversized? Does it have photos? 5y

This book was just endlessly interesting and funny and poignant, and I really loved Mo Rocca's narration. I wish he did more narration- he's got a very Wil Wheaton-esque way of telling stories and I am here for it. I don't do a ton of podcasts, because I'm usually listening to audiobooks, but I might have make an exception for Rocca!

Day 2 turned out better than I planned! I took a break in the afternoon to hang out with the Hubs and my brother, playing pinball- and I even learned a few tricks! I did read some of The Last Witness, but I forgot to add it to the collage. I hope to finish it and the tagged book today although I am working at the bookstore all day.
