I enjoyed this book...well I enjoy very much Darcy Coates novels because they are so atmospheric. Not horror more mystery and suspense and they are slow pace. 3.8 ⭐️

This is the first in a series by Darcy Coates about haunted and doomed houses. Joseph Argenton marries Sophie for an ulterior motives, but the longer they‘re together, they begin to fall in love. Joseph‘s house, however, is less welcoming. Sophie becomes very frightened and wants to leave. Unfortunately, the house won‘t let them. Sophie's world is shattered when disaster bankrupts her family. She's still reeling when she's offered an unexpected solution: Mr. Argenton, a wealthy stranger, has asked for her hand in marriage. Marrying Mr. Argenton will save her family, but it condemns Sophie to a life in Northwood, a vast and unnaturally dark mansion situated hours from civilization.

Still, she has no choice but accept the offer and hope the darkness won't swallow her whole.

As much as I would enjoy sleeping in every morning, I still love getting up at 5:00 a.m. & reading for a couple of hours before work. Darcy Coates is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. I'm not even a huge fan of #horror, but I've come to favor her #atmospheric writing style. When work has become so busy, I love getting lost in the setting of a #novel, and the two novels I've read by Coates do just that.

Starting a creepy ghost story before bed probably wasn‘t the smartest idea… but this ended up being a quick read and really fun! Definitely some moments that had me regretting my decisions, but overall I very much enjoyed it. Thank you, @MaleficentBookDragon for giving it to me - I‘ll probably read the sequel tomorrow 🤣

This is the fourth of Darcy Coates books I have read. It had one thing I always enjoy in a book. Loooooove. Was surprised to find that it a twosome. Read one in the AM. Read the other in the PM. I enjoyed it. It is a simple read.

An interesting, fast gothic horror that felt like a pulp novel. The characters are reminiscent of a 19th century novel & the atmosphere made it feel something akin to du Maurier's Rebecca. Balanced somewhere between a serious horror & satire, things were often over the top. A lot of classic horror tropes were rolled into the narrative, which made it more enjoyable, though a bit cliche.

This book was an easy, fun read for me. I highly recommend to anyone who likes historical fiction, gothic-creepy stories.

Darcy Coates is a one of my faves but I put this one off because I don‘t typically enjoy historical fiction. However, the traditional style of Coates shined through with some great eerie vibes. A creepy house filled with secrets awaits Sophie when she returns home with her new husband. She must figure out what is haunting the home and her husband.

Another great tale by Darcy Coates! Love the historical setting of this with its many gothic elements. I'm definitely curious to see where it goes in the second book. Excellent characters and a great build up. I would have liked more haunting episodes and a longer middle section, but I'm just being picky.

This was a really fun Gothic, haunted house read. Very much a read-alike for Crimson Peak! I read this one on audio and the narration was fantastic (except for one character who is only there for like 5 minutes of the 7 hours). The creep factor builds really well and I was really invested in the characters!
