I Have Something to Tell You: A Memoir
I Have Something to Tell You: A Memoir | Chasten Buttigieg
22 posts | 18 read | 11 to read
A moving, hopeful, and refreshingly candid memoir by the husband of former Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg about growing up gay in his small Midwestern town, his relationship with Pete, and his hope for America's future. Throughout the past year, teacher Chasten Glezman Buttigieg has emerged on the national stage, having left his classroom in South Bend, Indiana, to travel cross-country in support of his husband, former mayor Pete Buttigieg, and Pete's groundbreaking presidential campaign. Through Chasten's joyful, witty social media posts, the public gained a behind-the-scenes look at his life with Pete on the trail--moments that might have ranged from the mundane to the surprising, but that were always heartfelt. Chasten has overcome a multitude of obstacles to get here. In this moving, uplifting memoir, he recounts his journey to finding acceptance as a gay man. He recalls his upbringing in rural Michigan, where he knew he was different, where indeed he felt different from his father and brothers. He recounts his coming out and how he's healed from revealing his secret to his family, friends, community, and the world. And he tells the story of meeting his boyfriend, whom he would marry and who would eventually become a major Democratic leader. With unflinching honesty, unflappable courage, and great warmth, Chasten Buttigieg relays his experience of growing up in America and embracing his true self, while inspiring others to do the same.

The author shares about his childhood in a small town, feeling different from his brothers, and fearful about his growing realization that he is gay. As a young adult, he starts to face his internalized homophobia and has a rocky couple of years before he finally starts to heal. Then he meets his future husband, Pete, finds his footing as a teacher, and shares about his unexpected role as the partner of a politician, and what that means for him.

Oooh! Nice! I just won this book from the #LittleFreeLibrary website and from the publisher, Simon & Schuster. I plan to read this book, register it on #BookCrossing and then share it with others. It‘s a light, enjoyable read so far.

Happy Publication Day to the young adult version of this book!

One of the festival sponsors provided copies for attendees, and it was worth standing in line in the rain for a signature.

Honest, humorous and straightforward memoir. Could relate to many things but particularly the challenge not to feel inferior when everyone else in the room has an Ivy League education and your alma mater is a state school. No matter how kind the people are and how liberal their politics, there‘s often a whiff of classism. Even as a spouse Chasten could bring an important voice and lived experience to politics at a national level.

FelinesAndFelonies I love Chasten and Pete so hard. ❤️ 4y

I am finishing my last book of 2020 with this sweet girl on my lap. Sophie looks pissed here, but she‘s just mid purr (and probably mildly disgruntled that I stopped petting to type this post). Later today, I intend to avoid cleaning/course prep to reflect on my reading log (only 68 books this year 😭) and try and identify a top 10.

Let's talk about husbands. Mine surprised me with this amazing pastry at work on a stressful day. Mayor Pete's husband wrote a book about his early life, meeting Pete, and being on the campaign trail for the Democratic nomination for president. I love Pete and I think he would have been an excellent and stabilizing force for America, which he still can be/already is in other roles. Chasten is down to earth and inspiring in this memoir.

AmyG I really liked Mayor Pete, too. He has a real future in politics. 4y

If I'm reading Nonfiction it's usually via Audible. Especially Memoirs. If I'm interested enough in person's life to read their book usually I like their voice. Who better to tell story than the person who lived it? First heard Chasten Buttigieg's name in article about how cheery he was on Twitter. You get that postive attitude here. Something the world needs. Midwestern Charm that I thoroughly enjoyed listening to while I worked in my garden.

Crinoline_Laphroaig
A Hard Worker; from the time he was old enough to work he was always working. 2 - 3 jobs and going to school. But he's very honest about his mistakes. How he had a hard time settling on a career path. The first in his family to go to college, he didn't have a realistic idea or guidance about the cost of college and he ended up with massive student debt. ⬇️

4y
Crinoline_Laphroaig "While I was studying, student loans kept me from sinking below the level of constantly broke. Afterward, having to pay them back kept me from rising above it." ⬇️ 4y
Crinoline_Laphroaig He talks of his insecurity. Of feeling like a failure because of debt and expecting Pete to dump him because of it. Obviously that didn't happen. It's a story with a wonderful principle of “I love you. How can I help?”

You get to hear the behind the scenes of the campaign. How grueling it is, but "focus on the good that comes from rolling up your sleeves and doing the work."

CocoReads I need to get ahold of this. I adore Mayor Pete and Chasten both. (Yeah, I know he‘s not Mayor Pete anymore but it‘s hard to stop calling him that). They are great together. 4y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @CocoReads I kinda think he'll be Mayor Pete forever. Hopefully he'll run again and he can be President Pete. 🤞🏻 4y
CocoReads @Crinoline_Laphroaig I sure hope so! I actually live in South Bend so I‘m pulling for him! 4y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @CocoReads I read Mayor Pete's book as well. That Chapter where he jogs through South Bend in the early morning he made it sound so interesting. I need to visit someday. 4y
CocoReads @Crinoline_Laphroaig a family friend‘s son had an internship with him and went on a few of those jogs. It‘s not a bad place to live, although the hub a@d I both work in Michigan so we‘ve started thinking about moving north in the next few years 4y

Chasten was definitely the least wooden spouse on the 2020 campaign trail, and in this book, he continues to show his empathy, humor, and authenticity. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing about his midwestern roots, his love story with Pete, and the grueling, yet inspirational campaign trail. #audiobook 4.5⭐️🎧

Remember my #readthecandidates challenge. The best part of it was that I found Pete Buttigieg. I was all in #teampete right up til the End. So when I saw this book coming out I knew I needed to read it ASAP. It did not disappoint. Chasten is SO real! He is honest and hilarious, but his life has NOT been easy. This book made me feel like I know him. So good, and it made me cry a few times too!
