'An astonishing book' M.W. CRAVEN He is my husband. To honour and obey. Until murder do us part. London, 1888: Susannah rushes into marriage to a young and wealthy surgeon. After a passionate honeymoon, she returns home with her new husband wrapped around her little finger. But then everything changes. His behaviour becomes increasingly volatile and violent. He stays out all night, returning home bloodied and full of secrets. Lonely and frustrated, Susannah starts following the gruesome reports of a spate of murders in Whitechapel. But as the killings continue, her mind takes her down the darkest path imaginable. Every time her husband stays out late, another victim is found dead. Is it coincidence? Or is he the man they call Jack the Ripper?

I am not quite sure what I just read but think twisty enough to cover that prompt for #booked2023 well researched with fascinating perspectives on east end life during the 1880s and Jack the Rippers run of terror and a somewhat feminist undertone I was pleased to pull this off the tbr pile. Also doubles up for #bluing for #panetone23

Soubhiville I really enjoyed this one! Have you read this nonfiction that pairs perfectly with it? 2y
Itchyfeetreader @Soubhiville yes! Loved it and could see if the detail in here for sure! Glad I am not the only one who enjoyed this - tried to explain it to my husband who was a bit baffled! 2y

It‘s been a long time since I‘ve done a #FictionNonfictionPairing.

Just finished People of Abandoned Character, and it felt appropriate for spooky season. Susannah is newly married, but the happy honeymoon period lasts mere weeks. Her husband starts staying out all night and returning home in the morning soaked in blood and scratched up. It happens more than once, and Susannah starts to suspect Thomas is hiding something sinister. ⬇️

Soubhiville I haven‘t read much about Jack the Ripper, maybe only one or two books in the past. So having this one and The Five leads to a natural pairing! Started The Five yesterday and it‘s great so far! 2y
LeahBergen I enjoyed both of these! 👍 2y
Librariana I love learning that a hashtag exists for something I *attempt* to do in my own reading life 😁 I also saw your Bookspin list, @Soubhiville and was reminded about Non-fiction November! So thank you for that as well! If my memory serves me right, I think I might have 3 or so NF picks for the month. 2y
Megabooks The Five was really sad. 2y

I really enjoyed this story set in Victorian London in 1888. Susannah marries and is very happy then slowly things start to go wrong. Her husband mistreats her and is out all night often. Then starts a killing spree women being butchered by a possible serial killer in Whitechapel. It really compelling and gripping with twists. It's also rather graphic with it killing especially the end. But would still recommend.

Cathythoughts Nice review! I thought it was a great read 👍 (edited) 3y

Much hooky from work was played along with this fantastic audiobook! I‘m not a Jack the Ripper obsessive or anything but I did also read The Five, which I highly recommend as well! This fictional account of a lower class nurse who finds herself in desperate circumstances and surrounded by dark intrigue was engrossing, I did not want to stop listening!

Historical fiction about the man known as Jack the Ripper? A novel I didn‘t know I wanted nor would be drawn into, but was. Very character driven and the unfolding of the story was neither rushed nor slow. It is a very spelled out horror compared to others I have read in this genre, but for this one, I enjoyed that.

A nurse who thinks her life is servitude in the hospital is whisked off her feet by a young surgeon. As married life begins, he is not the devoted husband he seemed. Set in 1888 with Jack the Ripper at large, Susannah's mind starts to run away with her. Whitfield has created a great novel with lots of twists and turns. Written with pace that keeps you turning the page

Seasonally appropriate and throughly entertaining! Definitely has Rebecca vibes. 🥺 I really didn‘t expect one of the turns of character and was a brave choice on Whitfield‘s part.

Tamra MC turned out to be not entirely likable and not all the victim perhaps she seems to be in the beginning. As a woman, she had to do what she had to do to survive. 3y

Balibee146 Oh I absolutely love dip powder.... I have tons of them 💕💕 3y
Tamra @Balibee146 how well does the process work at home? Last very long? 3y
Balibee146 @Tamra as long as the pre nail prep is good they last on me until I want a change of need to remove or backfill due to growth. I love dip powders lol. 3y
Balibee146 I've just started experimenting with builder gels as a nail overlay underneath the dip and about to do a nail tech course for that element! UV gels need to be done right with good quality brands (some well known ones have alleged problems!) or risk allergies etc....clear dip under the coloured ones can be used as a nail overly too without those hassles 👍 3y
Tamra @Balibee146 I‘m not confident in my patience to do it myself. 😏 3y
Balibee146 @Tamra i hated my first application... Wasn't fun at all though it looked alright. I'd suggest a You Tuber called Marla Kris.... Her tutorials are awesome....there's been a problem with music rights on old videos so they are often no music but worth a watch. She has a Facebook group too. My beginner mistake was using a cuticle remover liquid... They are all oily... Just gentle prep and take your time with a light colour 👍 3y
Tamra @Balibee146 thank you for the advice! 3y
Balibee146 @tamra you are welcome.... Oh and that colour is beautiful, what is it if you don't mind? 3y
Tamra @Balibee146 Unfortunately I don‘t recall! I‘ve had another color since. 3y

There's no shortage of books based around 1888 Whitechapel & the horror of the murdering of women that took place. This is a genuinely fresh take on that well trod ground - a gothic, macabre story - that has diverse characters. Susannah tries hard to navigate the roles she must play whilst under the pressure of an abusive relationship. The story has tension, grit, blood & violence. It's also well researched and paced well with lots of twists.

I did enjoy this for the most part; I found Susanna a little grating after a while. the prominence placed on women and the LGBTQ community made it that much interesting. I'm honestly surprised this was a first novel.
I'm very intrigued by Jack the Ripper and if anyone has some good non-fiction resources to share, please do! I have no idea what the general consensus is on Jack the Ripper presently but i'd love to read into it!

The narrator of this novel set in 1888 London is Susannah, an ex-nurse who has rushed into marriage with a wealthy surgeon. Soon, their rosy relationship begins to sour and she realizes that the recent murders of women seem to coincide with the evenings in which her husband doesn‘t come home. 😬

A few weeks ago I saw a book tube video that spoke about combining fiction and non-fiction reads to give a deeper/better understanding of the subject. Having seen The Five and having this book, I decided to pair them. Starting the novel today, but The Five showed me the stereotypes/myths around Jack the Ripper and looking at this title, I am wondering is this just another propagation of the myth? If yes, not all that interested, but let‘s see.

stretchkev In high school I had a year when the English and History were combined. We read fictional titles that corresponded with the time period we were studying. Was a neat way to get immersed in the history. This sounds even more immersive. 4y

Prepared to be shocked by the written word in this novel. An abusive husband and psychological torment from the house keeper along with the goings on in a Mollie's House all of which is described in detail is surpassed by the graphic description of the injuries to the victims of 'Jack the Ripper' You may even feel the warmth and slime of the blood running down your own arms as you become absorbed in the story. This debut novel deserves an award.

Nute Definitely intrigued! Stacking! 3y

This is historical fiction at its finest. Full of descriptions of the squalid life of the poor in Victorian London, the gruesome murders and the way women were treated at that time. There‘s a mystery too and with the great characters, the marvellous plot with some shocks and surprises on the way, this is a totally immersive read. If you enjoy the books of Ambrose Parry and Bridget Collins, you are going to love this. A must read.
