Oliver Twist with a twistWaters spins an absorbing tale that withholds as much as it discloses. A pulsating story. The New York Times Book Review Sue Trinder is an orphan, left as an infant in the care of Mrs. Sucksby, a "baby farmer," who raised her with unusual tenderness, as if Sue were her own. Mrs. Sucksbys household, with its fussy babies calmed with doses of gin, also hosts a transient family of petty thievesfingersmithsfor whom this house in the heart of a mean London slum is home. One day, the most beloved thief of all arrivesGentleman, an elegant con man, who carries with him an enticing proposition for Sue: If she wins a position as the maid to Maud Lilly, a nave gentlewoman, and aids Gentleman in her seduction, then they will all share in Mauds vast inheritance. Once the inheritance is secured, Maud will be disposed ofpassed off as mad, and madeto live out the rest of her days in a lunatic asylum. With dreams of paying back the kindness of her adopted family, Sue agrees to the plan. Once in, however, Sue begins to pity her helpless mark and care for Maud Lilly in unexpected ways...But no one and nothing is as it seems in this Dickensian novel of thrills and reversals

Fingersmith by Sarah Waters was so intriguing. It was about Sue Trinder who is an orphan, left as an infant in the care of Mrs. Sucksby, a “baby farmer,” who raised her with unusual tenderness. One day, Gentleman arrives, and comes up with a proposition for Sue. The proposition was crazy. She wanted to pay back the kindness of her adopted family, so Sue agrees to the plan. The story takes a turn in the most unexpected way. Great book to read!

Wow. I think Sarah Waters must have been possessed by the ghost of Wilkie Collins when she wrote this. It‘s so good. Waters can put you in a mildewing Victorian stately home or a grimy London alley and people these settings with colourful Dickensian characters - and take 500 pages to do it - but she‘ll also give you a plot that jumps and runs and dances about until your brain is addled and you can‘t leave the house until it‘s finished!

In the beginning I struggled with this novel but towards the end of part one (p165) something changed and I was hooked. I‘m so glad I continued reading beyond p125.

The story start when Gentleman visits Sue‘s home in London and tells about a rich, young girl living in the country. Gentleman has a plan to marry this girl and steal her money and wants Sue to be her maid.

Throughout the novel there are several twists and turns.

My goal for the #24in48 is to finish this one.

I‘m about 125 p in and not really hooked jet. I‘ve discovered that my patience when I‘m reading a library book is shorter than when I‘m reading a book I‘ve bought. Is anyone like this? Does the book stay the same for the next 400 p?

I never hit the 24 hrs, but just love to set aside more time for reading than I usually do.
I‘m going to IKEA today and won‘t get as much reading time as I thought.

Tomorrow, after work, I start my 3 week staycation. I‘ve counted down for the last weeks and I‘m really looking forward to read and sleep.

These are the books I hope to read, along with my current read that I tagged. As I counted them, I think there are more books than I have days of. So this is a slightly ambitious pile.

Now I need to figure out which of these books to read for the upcoming readathon.

Whew, this was great! I really enjoyed this book. It scratched the itch created by my reading of Du Maurier‘s Rebecca earlier this year. The story got off to a bit of a slow start, but the payoff was so worth it. Waters‘ main characters have real depth and her settings are memorable and well-drawn. The best part was the story, though. I genuinely didn‘t know what to expect.

My reading has slowed significantly with abundant December obligations (there‘s a party tonight—I don‘t want to talk about it), but I‘m loving the couple of smith-themed ebooks I am currently reading.

Also, about the aforementioned holiday party...I still don‘t want to talk about it, but I will say that there will be lots of small talk about my life choices as my husband introduces me to all of his co-workers. 😫

Cathythoughts As for the party we can‘t mention .... You will be brilliant! 👍🏻♥️. Love Fingersmith 1y
Suzze Oh, I remember parties with my husband‘s co-workers. Mechanical engineers. And all they talked about was work. 1y
LauraBeth I can relate to this so much. My husband just dropped it in my lap that his work holiday party is next weekend. Am gearing up for a million questions. I‘ll be in the corner with a glass of wine, talking to the host‘s dog and probably texting @MicheleinPhilly 😂 (edited) 1y
saresmoore @LauraBeth I just found out last week and I had to go dress shopping. 😦 I picked something black, hoping I‘ll blend in with the table linens. Sorta makes you feel like an exotic creature on display when everyone else works together and you‘re the elusive spouse, doesn‘t it? 1y
saresmoore @Suzze Yikes! My brother is a mechy who doesn‘t read, so I can imagine what that would be like! 1y
saresmoore @Cathythoughts Thank you! ♥️ 1y
saresmoore @Mindyrecycles Thanks! 😂😭 1y
saresmoore @batsy I hope so, too. My husband tends to engage the wrong type of person in conversation, then leave me with them to find someone more interesting. I‘ve been coaching him on reading the room. 😅 1y
erzascarletbookgasm Aww, I‘m sure you‘ll do fine. 😙👍🍷 1y
vivastory I don't know if your daughters are going to be present, but if not, ifyou get trapped in an awkward conversation, you can always tell them you have to respond to a text from the babysitter & then just get on Litsy 1y
batsy Hahaha! You will be your charming self and will win over anyone 😘 1y
saresmoore @vivastory Scott, you are a genius! 1y
saresmoore @erzascarletbookgasm If I survive the evening, I‘ll at least be free from party obligations through Christmas! 1y
vivastory I have even faked making phone calls before to get away from uncomfortable conversations. 😂😂 1y
LauraBeth You will look lovely in your black dress and it‘ll be fine ❤️ And never doubt your life choices. You don‘t need your story to be impressive to others in order for it to be impressive. You‘re clearly building huge things that may not be linear to some people. One of my favorite things about you is that I don‘t think you live to impress anyone. You live to become you and who you want to be tomorrow. 1y
rabbitprincess Urgh, good luck with the party! 1y
saresmoore @LauraBeth Oh, you brought me to tears. You have such a gift for encouragement! Thank you. ♥️♥️♥️ 1y
LeahBergen You‘re awesome and you‘re beautiful and your life choices are your own. 😘😘😘 1y
JennyM Echoing all the littens before. You are awesome, will look awesome, and we all love you 😘 1y
saresmoore @LeahBergen Thank you, love. ♥️🥰 1y
saresmoore @JennyM Thank you! ♥️♥️♥️ 1y
rubyslippersreads Can you sneak in a book? 😊 1y
Suet624 Gah!!! 1y
Suet624 And @laurabeth. 💕💕💕 1y
readinginthedark Ah, the obligatory holiday parties. First, you're amazing! Second, solidarity! Those things are so awkward. My husband works with a bunch of tech people, and they're like, "You work at a...library?" You'd think I was an alien! ? 1y
saresmoore @readinginthedark Awkward is the word! My husband works in FinTech. They speak perpetually in acronyms I don‘t understand. 🤷‍♀️ I‘m like, do any of you guys read books? No? 1y
Centique Oh wow, I can totally relate to this! Especially lately I feel at a loss to explain as part of small talk why I no longer have a “career”. Two of the people from my writing class have scored amazing agents and look like they‘ll be getting book deals, so I‘ve been a bit glum. HOWEVER 😊 reading your post and these comments has reminded me of what matters! Thank you - it‘s not the first time you‘ve inspired me 😊💕 1y
saresmoore @Centique Oh, that‘s so hard! Success is such a relative concept, and, especially in writing (hello, act of wild vulnerability), timing is of the utmost importance. But still... 😒 Have you read Big Magic by Liz Gilbert? I got a big kick out of that book and her take on the creative process/timing/success. Cheers to you, my friend, for making the hard choices! 🍻♥️ 1y
Centique @saresmoore no I haven‘t read it - thank you for the recc! And all your kind words 💕 1y
Moray_Reads Which is the Jeanette Winterson on the right? I can't make it out 1y
saresmoore @Moray_Reads I found it buried in the Kindle deals! It‘s 1y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore oh I've read that one, it's very good 1y
saresmoore @Moray_Reads Oh, good! The premise is fascinating. 1y
readinginthedark Yes, when my husband was in the Army, they were always speaking in acronyms! 😆 He works for Boeing now, and it's more like they just can't talk about work at parties at all, so that's slightly helpful. But my job and most things connected to the library seem pretty foreign to them, I think. I did have a pretty nice talk with one guy last time whose wife was a history major. 1y

Cathythoughts @Cinfhen I‘m a fan , but I would say give it another go. I know when I started The Little Stranger, I wasn‘t at all sure I‘m the beginning. But I ended up loving it & it was my book club choice ... we are on tomorrow night ! I hope the ladies liked it 1y
Cathythoughts @Moray_Reads me too 👍🏻❤️ 1y

No-one speaks. No-one moves, ............, we glide, softly, in silence, into our dark and separate hells .... “

“He keeps a reading-easel beside his place “ first I‘ve heard of one 🤷🏻‍♀️
I don‘t like this Character... but a reading easel ❤️ !!!! I can‘t eat & read ...but I would like a Reading-easel so I could ....

TrishB Sounds fun! 1y
Cathythoughts @TrishB yes, if I was eating alone .... perfect 👍🏻❤️ 1y

BiblioLitten I need to get The Little Stranger or The Paying Guests😊 1y
Cathythoughts I loved the Little Stranger.. I picked it for my IRL Bookclub this month... I‘m interested to see what the ladies think of it. Loved Paying Guests too .... but , I have a feeling this one , Fingersmith, will be my fave ! Little Stranger is really good though 🤷🏻‍♀️... great writer 👍🏻❤️ 1y

This is how I have to read this book ... with a postcard covering the part of the page I havnt read yet !! I‘m afraid I‘ll see what happens next .... I might glance down by accident. .... the tension is building at the moment... soooo good 👍🏻❤️

erzascarletbookgasm 😁❤️ 1y
batsy I found it "unputdownable" ? 1y
Reviewsbylola Love this one! I‘m reading a book now that has been compared to this one. I‘m loving it and I see the similarities! 1y

Cathythoughts @erzascarletbookgasm 👍🏻👍🏻❤️ 1y
Cathythoughts @batsy it IS just that 👍🏻❤️& very serious issues raised. 1y
Cathythoughts @Reviewsbylola Ok great , I‘ll have a look at that one 👍🏻💕 (edited) 1y
Reggie Lol, that‘s so clever, I usually just use my hand. I‘m the same way “just glancing” ahead on the page for answers. 1y
TrishB Great idea! I usually just put my hand there too! 1y
Cathythoughts @Reggie @TrishB what are we like !!!! I‘m definitely a latecomer to this behavior... this book is a page turner & profound. I just don‘t want to know what happens next ... and it seems every sentence is “ what happens next” .... love it ... beautiful, wonderful writer. She can surely tell a tale. ... and it‘s heartfelt ❤️& Dark 🖤 & real 💔 (edited) 1y
Mrsann2000 Loved this book!! Mesmerized by it. I use my hand when I don‘t want to see beyond the sentence I am on... 1y
Cathythoughts @Mrsann2000 Yes, mesmerized is a very good word for it 👍🏻. It‘s the first time I‘ve ever hidden the text , I can usually trust myself, but this book is something else !! 1y
