Fingersmith | Sarah Waters
Oliver Twist with a twistWaters spins an absorbing tale that withholds as much as it discloses. A pulsating story. The New York Times Book Review Sue Trinder is an orphan, left as an infant in the care of Mrs. Sucksby, a "baby farmer," who raised her with unusual tenderness, as if Sue were her own. Mrs. Sucksbys household, with its fussy babies calmed with doses of gin, also hosts a transient family of petty thievesfingersmithsfor whom this house in the heart of a mean London slum is home. One day, the most beloved thief of all arrivesGentleman, an elegant con man, who carries with him an enticing proposition for Sue: If she wins a position as the maid to Maud Lilly, a nave gentlewoman, and aids Gentleman in her seduction, then they will all share in Mauds vast inheritance. Once the inheritance is secured, Maud will be disposed ofpassed off as mad, and madeto live out the rest of her days in a lunatic asylum. With dreams of paying back the kindness of her adopted family, Sue agrees to the plan. Once in, however, Sue begins to pity her helpless mark and care for Maud Lilly in unexpected ways...But no one and nothing is as it seems in this Dickensian novel of thrills and reversals

@Amandajoy I love your list!

Five I‘ve read and loved: One to Watch, Library at Mount Char, A Promised Land, Mexican Gothic. Funny, when I was narrowing down my list I took Obama‘s book off because I technically read it December 2020. 😉

The three at the top left were already on my TBR, so definitely reading those, and I hope to get to at least the ones on the right side.

So excited! ❤️

#NewYearWhoDis

Amandajoy Yay! I‘m glad there are some you‘re excited about. The tagged book was in my top 5 this year. I made a note in my bujo so I know where my cutoff was for this so next year I can include December books, they should totally get counted! Those December books deserve some love too 😂 (edited) 2mo

Liz_M I loved the tagged book! I think I included it in my #NYWD22 list, but honestly I put my list together in such a hurry/panic (I took too long last year and missed out) that I have no idea what I included. 😁 2mo
monalyisha I hadn‘t ever heard of the tagged & I think it looks so good! 2mo
monalyisha Oh! And I asked for/received Elatsoe in a swap, so I‘ll definitely be reading that at some point this year, too. 2mo
JamieArc Ooh! Glad you‘ll be reading Fingersmith. It was my favorite a few years ago! 2mo
monalyisha I think I may be the only Litten who was utterly confused by the Hawkins. If I were the type of person who reread books more frequently, I'd visit it again. Was I just in the wrong mood? That'd be an interesting list to compile, actually! Another title that'd be on it, embarrassingly, is A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. That one I *DO* plan on rereading. I read it in Middle School & didn't like it...but so many people (whose taste I respect) ADORE it! (edited) 2mo
MeganAnn Looks like a fantastic list! The Nickel Boys and We Ride Upon Sticks are both on my list from @JackOBotts so I‘m planning to read those in January also. 2mo

I read this historical crime novel in October, and it was ideal for the season. Critics have called it Dickensian, and it brilliantly evokes the sights and sounds of neo-Victorian London. Two orphaned heroines, one who lives with a group of thieves(fingersmiths) and one who lives with her rich uncle and helps him with his rare books, are brought together by a plan to steal the fortune. A thriller with an unexpected turn around every corner! 4.5 ⭐️‘s

#LittensDressedInBlood: Jawbreaker prompt

Fingersmith has so many twists along the way, but the biggest one will legit leave your mouth hanging open in shock. As one of my fellow book clubbers put it, the book is like Dickens on crack. If you're not a fan of horror, this would be a great book to stack for the Fall readathons (and same if you are a fan of horror but also like great twisty fiction),

*OLD REVIEW* Lesbians. This is set in the olden days. One girls is a maid for the other, with a dodgy older man. They plan to scam the rich girl and steal her fortune - but then the rich girls scams her maid and she gets locked in a mental hospital. The maid makes it back 'home' - only to find that she should have been the rich girl, and her 'mother' is actually the rich girl's mother. Heavy on the lesbian action 😂 *can't believe I wrote that!*

The upcoming days I will be posting 1 of my 10 favorite books of the year so far - with a few thoughts on them.

Suspense books are my go to choice when I‘m in need of some uncomplicated binge reading. I end up often disappointed though.
And then this one came along and it‘s perfect. The suspense, the twists and the setting in 19th century London.

I have mixed feelings about this book: I loved the historical element, set in the East London slums of Victorian England, and the plot twists were aplenty, but I can‘t deny feeling towards the end that things fell a bit flat. I think maybe this book is just a little too long and therefore became drawn out. With that being said, I still enjoyed the overall story and would recommend it ⭐️⭐️⭐️

So many amazing plot twists in this bad boy! But I must say I definitely thought it was too long. I know it's meant to be atmospheric, and you're supposed to soak in the details. For me though it was a bit much, but the twists had me invested.

What a delightful distraction this turned out to be. A historical crime tale that is twisty and turny and full of interesting characters, with a gritty Victorian setting and a healthy dollop of lesbian romance. Officially a Waters fan.

I have to reread this book, to see if the plot hatched by the conspirators really needs to be so elaborate. The book it actually makes me want to reread, though, is Wilkie Collins‘s #Armadale. Fingersmith‘s Gentleman strikes me as the approximate male equivalent of Lydia Gwilt.

Fingersmith by Sarah Waters was so intriguing. It was about Sue Trinder who is an orphan, left as an infant in the care of Mrs. Sucksby, a “baby farmer,” who raised her with unusual tenderness. One day, Gentleman arrives, and comes up with a proposition for Sue. The proposition was crazy. She wanted to pay back the kindness of her adopted family, so Sue agrees to the plan. The story takes a turn in the most unexpected way. Great book to read!

The next books on my list! Hopefully I can go to Berlin next week, to my favourite bookstore in Germany. Otherwise I‘ll end up without reading material 😱.

Wow. I think Sarah Waters must have been possessed by the ghost of Wilkie Collins when she wrote this. It‘s so good. Waters can put you in a mildewing Victorian stately home or a grimy London alley and people these settings with colourful Dickensian characters - and take 500 pages to do it - but she‘ll also give you a plot that jumps and runs and dances about until your brain is addled and you can‘t leave the house until it‘s finished!

Bklover Great review! 2y

Pickpick

In the beginning I struggled with this novel but towards the end of part one (p165) something changed and I was hooked. I‘m so glad I continued reading beyond p125.

The story start when Gentleman visits Sue‘s home in London and tells about a rich, young girl living in the country. Gentleman has a plan to marry this girl and steal her money and wants Sue to be her maid.

Throughout the novel there are several twists and turns.

My goal for the #24in48 is to finish this one.

I‘m about 125 p in and not really hooked jet. I‘ve discovered that my patience when I‘m reading a library book is shorter than when I‘m reading a book I‘ve bought. Is anyone like this? Does the book stay the same for the next 400 p?

I never hit the 24 hrs, but just love to set aside more time for reading than I usually do.
I‘m going to IKEA today and won‘t get as much reading time as I thought.

Freespirit Fingersmith is a great book👍🏼 3y
TrishB I loved this book 💕 3y
CarolynM I think that's about where I gave up on this one. I think I'm too impatient for these Victorian style books. 3y
Henrik_Madsen I don‘t really think differently about library books and my own books. Then again, I‘m a notorious completist who has never quit on a book. (I have a few on very long breaks, though.) 3y

Tomorrow, after work, I start my 3 week staycation. I‘ve counted down for the last weeks and I‘m really looking forward to read and sleep.

These are the books I hope to read, along with my current read that I tagged. As I counted them, I think there are more books than I have days of. So this is a slightly ambitious pile.

Now I need to figure out which of these books to read for the upcoming readathon.

LiteraryinLawrence Wow, congratulations! 3y

Next up.

I‘ve read “Paying Guests” by her before and wasn‘t entirely convinced. But everyone that love her books, seems to view that as more of an okey book, so I thought I should give her another chance. Everyone seems to love “Fingersmith”.

Cathythoughts Brilliant book 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 3y

A bit of Victorian sweet amid all of my contemporary catching up. (I have seen the play by Alexa Junge twice and watched a movie or two, but I‘ve never read the book! Whaaaat? Also it‘s not sweet, but full of complex betrayals, I know, but the END!!!)

Cathythoughts Loved this book ! Outstanding 3y

It's not been a great week for reading and Litsying, so finally getting back to this book which I am loving (even though I kind of know the plot already from the film The Handmaiden). My pink port is also going down a treat.
