Magic Mountain
Magic Mountain | Thomas Mann
Hans Castorp - on the verge of an intense flirtation with Clavdia Chauchat, a married woman and feverish fellow patient - is perched high above the world, dozing in his splendid lounge chair at the International Sanatorium Berghof, swaddled in blankets against the Alpine chill. To his surprise and secret delight, he will remain on this "magic mountain" for seven years - removed from the "real" world, but irresistibly drawn into the sanatorium's own complex, vertiginous society, which in Mann's hands becomes a microcosm for Western civilization and its interior life on the eve of the First World War. Flooded with feeling, with powerful evocations of disease, with the glories of the natural world and inklings of the supernatural, The Magic Mountain is equally remarkable for Mann's treatment of time - the "flatland time" of healthy, active people and the "inelastic present" of the "people up here, " for whom illness is a lifelong career. Mann is a master at drawing dazzling characters with the finest irony: Settembrini, the impassioned Italian liberal, and Naphta, the caustic Jewish Jesuit, whose opposing worldviews trap them in a grotesque duel; Mynheer Peeperkorn, the enormously wealthy Dutch planter whose garrulous "personality" all but overwhelms his fellow patients; the blustery Director Behrens and subtle Dr. Krokowski, whose combined energies rule the day and the night of the Berghof; Clavdia Chauchat, the elusive Russian beauty whose slinking charms can awaken forgotten love; and, of course, Hans Castorp himself - the ordinary made extraordinary - whose interior journey leads him out into a blinding snowstorm and a stunning, fleeting moment of revelation; Hans, who is last seen on a battlefield of the Great War - the very conflict toward which every word of the novel has been magnetized.

Long and dense but if you‘re willing to give yourself over to the pace of the novel and you can overlook long-winded conversations - this book is very good. A young German man, in the turmoil of a Europe approaching the eve of WWI, visits his ailing cousin up at a TB sanatorium in the heights of the Alps. His visit is set for three weeks but he remains up on “the magic mountain” for seven years.

For almost the whole of 2023 this book has been hunting me. I read quotes from it (Trust), characters adores it (Time Shelter) and some hated it (Muss ich das gelesen haben?). So I decided it's time for a re-read. But when I pulled my book out of my shelf I held this 1000 pages chunkster in my hand and asked myself “Do I really want to read this?“. Well... Then I opened the first page and in my early-twenties handwriting I had written there ⬇

Jari-chan “Irrelevance on 900 pages.“
So I decided to compromise. Usually, I don't listen to abridged audio books, but here it seemed legit. I could reread the book, while not forcing myself through the whole thing.
My version still had 15 CDs. It was gently abdriged, as the publisher stated and it had the perfect narrator. Gert Westphal totally fits into this world, his voice transporting us into this not-place, wildly debating philisophical questions.

Bail, I could no longer read about Hans Castorp‘s perpetual thoughts of sanitarium life. I am on page 440, 61% through and I feel like this book is just a constant continuation of the same theme and idea, prolonged for the author's amusement but nobody else's....I did appreciate some of the authors descriptions on the scenery in the Swiss Alps and believe this could have been a positive read for me had it been condensed 500 pages or so.

Lcsmcat I finished it, but found myself screaming “Get over yourself!” frequently. 😂 1y
Pip2 😆 Yeah, so I was the same way reading Joyce but I am now implementing the fifty rule. If it doesn‘t hook me by page 50 or 12.5% whatever is longer, I am bailing. Life is too short and there are too many wonderful reads to be had! (edited) 1y

The writing is wonderful, the scenery relaxing, and the philosophical musings capture a moment in time. The Magic Mountain is a rich text well worth the time spent. One of my top ten novels of all time.

I made it! 3⭐️ for me… this is the hardest chunkster I have read so far. I felt that Mann had this collection of thoughts that he wanted to share, and he decided to dump everything into this story of Hans Castorp. Despite this, I still like the way the story is set up, and also the smart little details that only a good author can produce, and the sprinkle of humours that made me giggle in parts of the book. A tough book, but worth the effort.

It says a lot about how perfectly written this 900 page book with almost no plot is that it never felt long as I was listening. The mountain and the secluded sanitarium there in the years before World War One was so dreamy in every sense, I got absolutely obsessed with the world outside time that Hans Castorp visited and found myself wanting to go there myself to escape lockdown London

Simona Part two is still on my TBR list🤫 4y

Hans Castorp travels to visit his cousin in a tuberculosis sanatorium; his short visit lasts seven years. Reading about his stay in the Swiss Alps, eating five gourmet meals a day, resting on the balcony in an extraordinarily comfortable chair, interactions with other patients, a love interest, and vigorous discussions was very appealing right now. The philosophizing was a bit much, but the descriptions of time, scenery and music were stunning.

BarbaraBB That picture is so fitting, love it! And such a great book too! 4y

It took me a whole month to finished this story about sick young man and his contemplation about world, death, love, literature, history, society, time .... very philosophical, many ideas, written in lush, rich language, but for me it wasn‘t just too plotless (and I usually like plotless stories), but it was also very cold, soulless story.
I finished only first part, but I‘m totally counting it as finished prompt for #ReadAroundTheWorld #Germany

SharonGoforth @HardcoverHearts It is!! I‘ve spent the past 30 minutes trying to figure out what Mann means! This hasn‘t been an easy read, but I‘ve managed to hang in there until I read this! I‘ll just move along and hopefully it will make sense! 5y
Lcsmcat I just took this as nonsense spouted by the believers of the séance. Hans was constantly buffeted by ideas, from Dr. K, Settembrini, Naphtha, even Peeperkorn. And he didn‘t get most of them, he was just swept away on the tide of talk. So I felt like Mann was putting the reader in Hans‘ shoes with this kind of sentence. ??‍♀️ 5y
SharonGoforth @Lcsmcat He certainly did a good job of that! That was Dr. K‘s nonsense, from one of his lectures. Peeperkorn was interesting in that he said a lot without actually saying anything. It seems that Mann liked to use the different characters as representatives of specific philosophical ideas he was exploring. 5y

@Lcsmcat Linda, just a heads-up - I was looking ahead to see how long Chapter 5 is, and discovered that in the Lowe-Porter translation, there are pages of conversation between Hans and Frau Chauchat that are in French!! Just wanted to mention it in case you‘re like me and don‘t read French 😱😱. I did some checking, and the John Woods translation is in English. I found it on Kindle for $1.99. #magicmountain

Lcsmcat Thanks! I do read French, but it‘s good to be prepared. I just got through all the “science” of creation and organic vs inorganic matter. First, do you think Mann believed all that? And second, OMG, even with my limited scientific background I was appalled. 5y
Lcsmcat I picked up the eBook also, but because it‘s so windy here that I can‘t read a paper book outside on the deck. So I‘m going back and forth. 5y
SharonGoforth @Lcsmcat I felt like I sat through a 3 day A&P lecture!! I‘m wondering how much of it was driven by the knowledge available at the time he wrote it, or if it was his way of setting up a change in Hans‘ philosophical beliefs (because of Settembrini‘s influence)? I liked the “atom as a universe” description. 5y
See All 6 Comments
Lcsmcat Have you gotten this far yet? Because both my hard copy and the eBook had this section in French. I‘m curious whether you found a translation that put it in English. 5y
SharonGoforth @Lcsmcat I realized last night after I posted, that they are both the same translation, even though Kindle says it is the Woods translation. So I wound up ordering the paperback of the Everyman‘s Library edition, which is supposed to be Woods. Should arrive tomorrow. I‘m at page 295, so not quite to the French part yet. 5y

This book is still one of my favorites after 17 years since first reading. I recommend this especially to young readers because it is likely the first time one will encounter a lot of the ideas and concepts discussed at length. This was an extremely formative book for me as a high school student and I still carry a fondness for it all these years later and upon re-reads.

So finally I finished this chunkster. As you see on the left it took really a lot of time to finish it. I liked the idea of magic mountain, it's setting and the relationships between the different kinds of characters but I couldn't deal with the discussions. I know, this is one of the main parts of the book, but I seem to be to dump to understand and appreciate them. 🤔 So it was the 6th book for my #litsyclassics. Hope the next one is easier. 🙈

Buechersuechtling No, no, no‼️ I didn‘t read the book and probably never will but I believe that when you don‘t understand complicated discussions and issues not _you_ and your wits are the problem but the one who lectures because (s)he obviously explains things badly. 7y
