A Line to Kill | Anthony Horowitz
36 posts | 30 read | 9 to read
'I couldn't see the sea from my bedroom but I could hear the waves breaking in the distance. They reminded me that I was on a tiny island. And I was trapped.' There has never been a murder on Alderney. It's a tiny island, just three miles long and a mile and a half wide. The perfect location for a brand new literary festival. Private Investigator Daniel Hawthorne has been invited to talk about his new book. The actual writer of the book, Anthony Horowitz, travels with him. Very soon they discover that not all is as it should be. Alderney is in turmoil over a planned power line that will cut through it, desecrating a war cemetery and turning neighbour against neighbour. The visiting authors - including a blind medium, a French performance poet and a celebrity chef - seem to be harbouring any number of unpleasant secrets. When the festival's wealthy sponsor is found brutally killed, Alderney goes into lockdown and Hawthorne knows that he doesn't have to look too far for suspects. There's no escape. The killer is still on the island. And there's about to be a second death...

2024 reads continued

G - consistently readable thrillers!

ALTK - 3rd Hawthorne crime novel and really like the Agatha Christie-sque vibes. I am looking forward to novels 4 or 5, and excited for the 3rd Atticus next year

CIAC 2 - just as much fun as the original

TSF - good follow up novel, but no where near as scary as TWM.

Horowitz and Hawthorne are invited to a literary festival. The wealthy husband and wife sponsoring the event are murdered, they aren't well liked, lots of suspects. I really enjoyed this one, didn't know who did it until the reveal. Loving the relationship between H and H. The specifics of the mystery won't stay with me but the MCs will! Overall, well written, good read.

I'm torn for a different reasons on this entry in the series. The protagonists were, in themselves and in their interactions, less exasperating than the last two books, but by the same token there was even less development between them, less reveals about their character or backstory. I appreciate the ending suggesting the possibility of a significant revelation in the next book, but there just wasn't much here. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? The author may have 'hung a lantern' on the fact that nobody wants to read about a sexual predator being involved in a murder mystery, but that doesn't change the experience. It's also 'becoming a thing' that the reader is left to ponder the justice of the dispatch of a 'bad guy' by people who have had their lives ruined. I remain happy that the former detective is not letting things slide, but the framing might be a bit too ambiguous for my preference for clear cut murder mysteries. 10mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/4 Of course, this series already breaks my rules, because Hawthorne doesn't quite fit in my line of liking 'good guy' detectives. And yet, here I am, planning to read the next book in the series. 🤷🏼‍♂️
⚠️racism, xenophobia, fatphobia, sexual harrassment, mention of paedophilia
10mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/4 P.S. I do get a little tired of seemingly every single depiction of open marriage in fiction being either unsuccessful/ending in heartbreak or associated with people who have shoddy morals/dirty dealings. Murder mysteries do love a scandal and puritanical/antiquated views make that easier to achieve. 🙄 10mo

The Hawthorne and Horowitz murder mystery series are definitely top notch! This one opens with the duo meeting editors/publishers at Penguin Random House to discuss the publicity of their first book. They appear at a literary festival on an island. A local resident is found dead and because the island has very little crime, the police force is minimal. Hawthorne is asked to work the case.

This is in a series, where a ex detective Hawthorne and writer Anthony Horowitz, yes he writes about himself. They are invited to a literary festival and a murder takes place. Luckily they are there to help solve it. It was a good read.

I read this (# 3 of the series) immediately after The Sentence is Death (# 2) … this is the first time I‘ve ever gotten to books in a series back to back and it was a nice change!
Either one was good, but I definitely got more from reading them so close together.

#Two4Tuesday @TheSpineView thanks for the tag. 1. The cover of the last ebook I read did have one of the clues 2. I borrowed it because it was the next in the series not for the cover ( but it does have an eye catching cover - it‘s red in the Canadian edition) Tagging everyone who wants to play 💚🐉

Listened to this whodunnit on my Libby app. Turns out this is the third book in a series. I don‘t think I missed anything but now I‘m going to have to go back and read them someday 😂. I enjoyed this audiobook- the author is actually a character in the mystery- he‘s Colonel Hastings to Hawthorn ( Poirot) a solid mystery - I guessed the murder fairly early on -but that just increased my enjoyment 🤣💚🐉

While I liked this book, it‘s not my favorite of the three Hawthorne/Horowitz books. The mystery was just a little convoluted, but at the same time the killer was obvious. It‘s still good though, and I still love the interactions between the two mcs. Pictures are from yesterday‘s walk; we‘re having too much bad weather right now for me to get to walk.

The third Hawthorne/Horowitz mystery is my new walking book. Because I drove a good deal and walked a fair amount (it was a beautiful day for it) I‘m almost half way through it already. Horowitz and Hawthorne are at a literary festival when a rich sponsor of the festival is murdered and they get involved in the investigation. Hawthorne also has some sketchy reasons for going to the festival in the first place. #audiowalk

Another very satisfying book by Anthony Horowitz! I have loved the 5+ books I‘ve read by him and this was no exception!

Also this picture is taken from inside the house. It‘s below freezing outside so definitely not a day for reading on the deck! 😋

Day two of my week of reading and I‘m about to start my fourth book. This pace of reading hasn‘t happened in like 9 months, and I feel like it‘s good for my soul. 💗

I have high hopes for this book by one of my favorite authors! I don‘t 100% remember what happened in the first 2 books of the series, but I‘m not too worried.

I really enjoy listening to this series. Rory Kinnear gives wonderful performances in all the audiobooks. The story on this one was a little slower than the others, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. It seemed at the end that a book 4 may be a thing, so that makes me happy!

Aims42 I also thought it seemed slower compared to the other books. A great read, but I noticed that too. Will definitely read a Book 4 and anything else he writes 😄 3y
Ericalambbrown @Aims42 same! I typically love his work. I‘m a huge Midsomer Murders fan and I started following him when I realized he‘d adapted the scripts for the first series. 3y

This series is great. You don‘t have to remember anything really to enjoy the next one after a break. They‘re clever and fun, and the Horowitz/Hawthorne pairing is thoroughly amusing. You MUST listen to the audiobooks. Narrator Rory Kinnear is fabulous!

First time I‘ve read this author. I‘ve seen his name on kids books and TV series. Thought I‘d have a go. I wasn‘t disappointed. Don‘t think I‘ve read a fiction book where the author puts himself in as one of main characters. Clever and entertaining . About to start Moonflower Murders. It‘s been on my shelf for a while.

#221. Modern version of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson, except Hawthorne is possibly more enigmatic than Holmes. I really enjoy Horowitz‘s fun and easily readable style; he‘s quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. 3rd & latest in the series, this was not my favorite, but still a very good book and full of surprises. More books to come as it ends on a small cliffhanger! Looking forward to the next one. #2021. 4⭐️

Horowitz just keeps on delivering intricate mysteries capped by a totally unexpected plot twist at the end. The oddly paired Horowitz and Hawthorne provide the basis for a brilliantly delivered story full of characters both despicable, insipid, and sad all overshadowed by the age-old cause for murder - revenge. I hear this series is being adapted to the screen. Looking forward to that.

These books are fun because of the way fictional Horowitz works with Hawthorne to solve cases. I love their working relationship, but it took a backseat in this installment. The mystery was mediocre, too. But I love this team as much as I love Morse/Lewis and Lynley/Havers so I‘ll stick around for the next one.

This is the third installment in this very different mystery series. The author has made himself a character and fiction and reality are blended in a unique and clever way. This is a fun read and a great recommendation for mystery fans that are open to something a little different. I gave it 4/5 stars.

Book 22 2021- The third in the series and although not my favorite still a very enjoyable read. I do love some metafiction and I really love a mystery so these are always a winner. Plus it gave me a reason to look up the tiny Chanel Island of Alderney and now I want to go there! See above photo! Listening to a Horowitz interview it seems that there will be 12 books in the series which I‘m very pleased about! #booked2021 #jewishauthorormc ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
