A Most Anticipated Book From: OprahMag.com * Refinery 29 * Seattle Times * LitHub * Houston Chronicle * The Millions * Buzzfeed Award-winning author Elizabeth McCracken is an undisputed virtuoso of the short story, and this new collection features her most vibrant and heartrending work to date In these stories, the mysterious bonds of family are tested, transformed, fractured, and fortified. A recent widower and his adult son ferry to a craggy Scottish island in search of puffins. An actress who plays a childrens game-show villainess ushers in the New Year with her deadbeat half brother. A mother, pining for her children, feasts on loaves of challah to fill the void. A new couple navigates a tightrope walk toward love. And on a trip to a Texas water park with their son, two fathers each confront a personal fear. With sentences that crackle and spark and showcase her trademark wit, McCracken traces how our closely held desiresfor intimacy, atonement, comfortbloom and wither against the indifferent passing of time. Her characters embark on journeys that leave them indelibly changedand so do her readers. The Souvenir Museum showcases the talents of one of our finest contemporary writers as she tenderly takes the pulse of our collective and individual lives.

I know there are people who love McCracken, but I am just not one of them. This is my second go at her, and only because this was on the NBA longlist for fiction, and she is just not for me. And it doesn‘t help that the audio is terrible! I thought the collection I just finished from Te-Ping Chen was SO much better.

These short stories are beautiful and touching. Few characters are recurring in the stories but all the characters are unique & real. These are humorous as well as heart touching. Writing is simple & deep. I specially like the story “ proof” which is about a man with fading memory takes a small trip with his son, and their reflections on both past & present.

This is my first Elizabeth McCracken read but it will not be my last. Give me all the books! I loved these oddball short stories so much! Elizabeth McCracken knows how to play with language and play with it she does. These stories are touching, funny, painful, loving, poignant, cringey, raw. Humans at their most vulnerable, families examined and exposed. Truly remarkable. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Im three stories in and I‘m enjoying but not hooked. I will admit my mind is FRAZZLED as I‘ve endured my first real rocket attack since moving here. In the past 12 hours we‘ve had more than a dozen air raid siren alerts and we heard, felt and saw more than 50 explosions from incoming rockets. What you see on TV or read on SM is not the whole story/picture. It‘s anxiety inducing, meant to terrorize, harm & destroy innocent civilians. 🙏🏼☮️🕊

Megabooks I‘m sorry, friend. Stay safe. 💕💕 3y

#Aprilwrapup A really good month of reading for me....
Loved so many of these, only a couple were disappointing....
Favorites were all four in the top row, plus the Summer cookbook and Learning to love you more, both great too.
Book club was Fleabag and was fun to discuss! 💕

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Honestly, I could‘ve gone for an entire novel of Jack and Sadie. The episodic stories documenting different pieces of their lives are the standouts here. The interspersed stand alones took me out of the linked stories, but that was clearly intended. I wasn‘t sold on this style at first but it slowly grew on me, and is ultimately effective. Side note: I need to stop listening to short stories on audio. For me, they‘re better in print.

Cinfhen @Megabooks said the same thing about short stories working better in print!! Although I listened to secret lives of church ladies this month on audio and it was 5 SHINY STARS 3y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen It‘s funny you say that, because that was a 5⭐️ audio for me, too. I think the stories were unique enough that they didn‘t run totally together. They had that common thread, but each one was distinct. 3y

This is an enjoyable collection from a master of the short story, but while all the stories are good, none are truly great ones that I‘ll be thinking about for years to come.

I think people who are generally not fans of short stories will like the satisfying endings to standalone stories and the five interconnected stories of Jack and Sadie that give a good picture of continuity of their relationship. 👍🏻👍🏻

Megabooks I just realized there are three other short story collections in that picture. Not that I‘m a huge fan of them or anything... Here they are in order of favorites 1. The Refugees, tied at 2. The Souvenir Museum and A House Is a Body, 4. Milk Blood Heat (not a fan of that one!) 3y
Cinfhen I‘m just here for the shelfie 🤩😍stunning!!! 3y
Ruthiella Do you keep books that didn‘t work for you? Or do you eventually pass them on? 3y
See All 10 Comments
Megabooks @Cinfhen thanks friend!! 3y
Megabooks @Ruthiella it depends. Short story collections I rarely pass on even if I didn‘t enjoy them the first time because I will generally give them a second or even third read. Occasionally my mind will even change. I love having story collections around. Other books I will take to the library sale or sometimes pass on through the mail. I just did a big cull. I try to do three a year. 3y
britt_brooke I just finished this on audio, and liked it very much, but wish I‘d gone print. 3y
Megabooks @britt_brooke it‘s a good collection, but I rarely enjoy short story collections on audio. A notable exception is 3y
britt_brooke @Megabooks I love Moshfegh! I read that one in print, but that‘s good to know! I may reread on audio. 3y
Megabooks @britt_brooke yes, we‘re both definitely in #ClubMoshfegh!! 3y

I loved these loosely interwoven short stories; really enjoyed Thunderstruck a few years ago, and will forever read any short story that McCracken puts forth!

Just wonderful. Not a dud in the bunch. Endlessly quotable, seamlessly leading me to laugh out loud one minute, then be heartbroken by a single sentence. Some characters feature in a number of stories, some stand alone, but every quirky character stole my heart a little. I‘ve been meaning to read McCracken for a really long time, and thanks to Netgalley, now I can‘t wait to get my hands on more. Loved it💕
