British author and photographer Levison Wood travels the Arabian Middle East. Ravaged by war, and tormented by terrorism he takes a lot of risks. But he does make it and he learns that prejudices are often just that. With respect for each country and its people he takes the reader along on his adventures and encounters. I hung on his every word. Thanks so much for knowing I‘d love this one Cindy, and sharing it with me ❤️

squirrelbrain I haven‘t read this one yet @BarbaraBB but want to - I read this one instead 3y
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain That‘s interesting. Levison Wood is referring to your book a lot! 3y
squirrelbrain I think Wood actually followed in Thesiger‘s footsteps didn‘t he Barbara? Hence, why I‘d like to read this ‘updated‘ version. 3y
Megabooks Sounds fascinating! Great review! 3y

The Souvenir Museum: Stories | Elizabeth McCracken

Just wonderful. Not a dud in the bunch. Endlessly quotable, seamlessly leading me to laugh out loud one minute, then be heartbroken by a single sentence. Some characters feature in a number of stories, some stand alone, but every quirky character stole my heart a little. I‘ve been meaning to read McCracken for a really long time, and thanks to Netgalley, now I can‘t wait to get my hands on more. Loved it💕
@Megabooks Have you read this one Meg?

Cinfhen Super #Stacked so fast 😍 4y

I love Isabel Allende. I‘ve read almost everything she has written & met her once. The Del Valle family books have always been my favorites, and this one feels like a return to those earlier novels. This is definitely Allende at her best. A sweeping saga of war and exile, family secrets, love, and loss. Many real people are woven into the story, including Neruda, and both his poems and memoir. I highly recommend!

alisiakae Interesting tidbit: This is where our kitty #Isabel got her name from 😻 #catsofLitsy 4y
BarbaraBB I haven‘t read her since the 90s, when I used to love her early books and then became a bit disappointed because it felt to me as if she wrote on autopilot. You make me want to reconsider though. This review is tempting, so is mentioning Pablo Neruda. (edited) 4y
Cinfhen Great review 💜makes me want to pick up this book, too @BarbaraBB 4y

Cinfhen And I love the #KittyTidbit 😻Alisia xx 4y
alisiakae @BarbaraBB I haven‘t read some of her 2010s published books because I was starting to feel the same way. I got the impression this was a book she‘s been meaning to write for a while, about the Spanish Civil War, and the ship Neruda organized to evacuate 2200 refugees for resettlement in Chile. 4y
alisiakae @Cinfhen there are a lot of prompts it could fill for #pop21! 4y
BarbaraBB That does sound fascinating. I‘m definitely tempted. 4y
Cinfhen I‘m going to nominate this book for bookclub!! Do u think it‘ll make for good discussion??? 4y
alisiakae @Cinfhen definitely! 4y
Cinfhen Yay!!! Thanks 😊 4y
KVanRead Loved this one and Daughter of Fortune and want to read more by her. Do you have a favorite? 4y
alisiakae My favorites would probably be Daughter of Forgune, Portrait in Sepia, and House of the Spirits. And this one. Maya‘s Notebook holds a special place in my heart because she signed my copy, making it out to my daughter Maya. 😄 But story wise it is not a favorite. 4y

Swing Time | Zadie Smith

Panpan

I'm not really sure what Smith wanted me to take away from this book. There's a lack of focus, like someone threw some vague plot points at her & challenged her to write a story including dance (but not too much), a famous Australian pop star, the Gambia, and no less than 2 preachy characters.

I have zero connection or interest in our unnamed narrator. Her childhood friend was annoying but interesting and sadly her timeline was underexplored.

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Pop star Aimee has to be one of the most bland celebrities I could imagine and was 100% useless here. A few of the side characters were interesting, but mostly there to further along drama. The writing shows promise, but ultimately things felt to meandering to develop anything of note (says a regular Joe to the fancy renowned writer). 4y
