From the best-selling author of The Elegance of the Hedgehog comes a story about a woman's journey to discover the father she never knew and a love she never thought possible. Rose has just turned forty when she gets a call from a lawyer asking her to come to Kyoto for the reading of her estranged father's will. And so for the first time in her life she finds herself in Japan, where Paul, her father's assistant, is waiting to greet her. As Paul guides Rose along a mysterious itinerary designed by her deceased father, her bitterness and anger are soothed by the stones and the trees in the Zen gardens they move through. During their walks, Rose encounters acquaintances of her father--including a potter and poet, an old lady friend, his housekeeper and chauffeur--whose interactions help her to slowly begin to accept a part of herself that she has never before acknowledged. As the reading of the will gets closer, Rose's father finally, posthumously, opens his heart to his daughter, offering her a poignant understanding of his love and a way to accept all she has lost.

This book touched my heart. Rose loses her unknown Japanese father and travels to Kyoto for his last will. She discovers the country, its culture and its people and all of this offers her the most beautiful way to mourn the father she never met. Thank you Cassie for bringing it to my attention! 🌹 🇯🇵

This one's a soft pick for me.

A woman loses her father and travels to Japan. There's so much in this one about grief and the temples and gardens were described with such beautiful imagery that I felt like I was walking through them.

My only complaint is that because it was short some parts of the story felt rushed.

Overall, it was a heartfelt read and I love Barbery's writing style.

BarbaraBB Bought it right after reading your review! 2y
Addison_Reads @BarbaraBB I hope you enjoy it. I've only read one other by her and its still one of my favorites. 2y
BarbaraBB I read that one too. It‘s not one of my favorites but I LOVE Japan and I just lost my father so it feels like the right book at the right time 🤍 (edited) 2y

kspenmoll @Nutmegnc I picked it up from the new book section. I had no idea the author had published another book. It‘s slim so hopefully I can read it soon. It intrigued me. 3y

Mehso-so

The only thing that worked for me in this book is writing - at the level of sentences … everything else is too predictable and too pathetic.

My first read of 2022 (pictured here with all the books my husband gave me for Christmas and my birthday, which was last week). I enjoyed the atmospheric descriptions of Kyoto's temples. Made me want to go there even more!

Rose travels to Kyoto for the reading of her fathers will. She didn‘t know her father. Paul, who was close to her father, takes Rose on a tour of the gardens of Kyoto and in doing so they both open up to new possibilities. There was something very beautiful about this book - even if I didn‘t always feel like I ‘got‘ every nuance. Thanks again @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego

This is a question I‘ve been grappling with. It‘s so satisfying to see it articulated so matter of factly on the page. #grief #mourning

keithmalek That is a fascinating question! For me, it's mourning what I've never had. 3y
wanderinglynn What a great question. For me, it‘s what I‘ve lost. People, beloved pets, times past. Because who‘s to say when I might get something I‘ve never had. Plus, I don‘t know if what I‘ve never had would be better, so I‘m not sure I can mourn the unknown. 3y
BookishTrish @keithmalek @wanderinglynn Im glad you‘re drawn in by the question too. I lost my father this year - but we‘ve been estranged for years and I think I mourn both some days… 3y
keithmalek @BookishTrish I'm sorry to hear that. 3y

This pendulum swing between the candor of happiness and the cruelty of desire was life itself.

Now this sounds fascinating! Another favorite author and this slim volume is only 148 pages so this must be fast moving to touch on all that.
