Stevie Bell solved the case of Truly Devious, and now shes taking her detecting skills abroad when she becomes embroiled in a mystery from 1990s England. Another pulse-pounding and laugh-out-loud stand-alone mystery from New York Times bestselling author Maureen Johnson. Senior year at Ellingham Academy for Stevie Bell isnt going well. Her boyfriend, David, is studying in London. Her friends are obsessed with college applications. With the cold case of the century solved, Stevie is adrift. There is nothing to distract her from the questions pinging around her brainquestions about college, love, and life in general. Relief comes when David invites Stevie and her friends to join him for study abroad, and his new friend Izzy introduces her to a double-murder cold case. In 1995, nine friends from Cambridge University went to a country house and played a drunken game of hide-and-seek. Two were found in the woodshed the next day, murdered with an ax. The case was assumed to be a burglary gone wrong, but one of the remaining seven saw something she cant explain. This was no break-in. Someones lying about what happened in the woodshed. Seven suspects. Two murders. One killer still playing a deadly game.

An engrossing story, but weaker than the proceeding books in the series, and the relationship drama was annoying. Some of the mystery also struck me as implausible. I do hope she'll write a better follow-up.

My #BookSpin book for January.

Five stars for my first read of September! This is the 5th book in the series and you kind of have to read the preceding ones to fully appreciate it. I‘ve liked all of them!

Hannah_Haymond I've really enjoyed this series, too! I was a little skeptical how it would continue past the initial three books, but, I think it's been fun 7mo

I‘m pretty close to the end of the tagged book (which I‘m loving- why did I wait a year to read it??), but I won‘t be done today. Time to post my September #bookspin list! I‘m feeling excited about all the ones listed and hoping the start of the school year (where I work) doesn‘t cramp my reading style too much. 😋

I‘m a fan of these books. Some are better than others but this one was a good one and another easy read! Easy summer book and she always leaves a cliffhanger!

Through no fault of her own, Maureen Johnson was late to her presentation, but there was a hardy band of fans who stuck it out in the rain to see her.

Here she is describing the axe that was used in the cold case murder.

She also said that there will be at least one more Stevie book, but she‘s working on something else that will come out before it.

I am still really enjoying this series…. But this one is not as strong as the others. It‘s an interesting locked room type mystery, set in England and there‘s some drama between Stevie & her friends & David… particularly the idea of the future… but there‘s a lot of different characters stuffed into this with everything else that pulls it down. #ISpyBingo: lamp (well, more of a chandelier but I‘m counting it)

Susanita The ending annoyed me very much. 11mo
Sarahreadstoomuch @Susanita omg YES. I mean, if we‘re on book 5, I get she‘s not interested in ending the series anytime soon. But to end like THAT! Wtf? 11mo

Just hanging out with Ruby as I read Maureen Johnson‘s latest. I can‘t stop laughing at the sex hoodies. Ruby has decided I‘m most peculiar.

I really like this series, but this is the weakest of the bunch. This one sees the familiar format of Stevie getting involved in a cold case, this one involving “The Nine,” friends in college with two having been murdered. But this very number of new characters results in none of them being fully fleshed out. So the revelations become “who is that?” rather than exciting or interesting. Low pick for me.

Stevie Bell‘s latest adventure takes her and her friends off on an adventure to England. It‘s fun, mysterious, music-filled (90s Britpop this time) and angsty as ever.

I loved it although the mom in me kept wanting to make Stevie take a warm bath, do a load of her laundry, and replace the half of her clothing that is worn out. This teenage detective genius seriously needs a mother figure.😅😥🕵️

suvata I really like Maureen Johnson‘s books. 13mo
Karisa @suvata She writes books that are hard to put down! Now if she could just stop with the cliffhanger endings. . . Not nice, MJ! 😂 13mo
Susanita Yes! I‘m not a mom, but I feel very concerned for Stevie and the situations where she finds herself. 13mo
Karisa @Susanita The author does a great job of making the reader care for her. She‘s a great blend of fearless, smart, and vulnerable. A detective for the modern day 💗 13mo

Finished Nine Liars. Enjoyed the tourist-in-London vibes and found the mystery elements interesting, but the teen drama not so much. Also, Nate applied to 71 colleges?!? That just doesn‘t even make sense.

Finished The Sentence. More thoughts later.

Renewed Sweetgrass. Only five more hours of listening!

Paused my Libby tagging project. Will likely resume as part of a more intense TBR scrub down the road.

While I enjoyed this latest in the Truly Devious series, it wasn‘t my favorite. Stevie & her Ellingham Academy friends travel to London where her boyfriend attends school. Stevie‘s reputation precedes her and she‘s asked to solve a cold case.

Another good book in this series.
I love that this time it is set in England, my home country.

Read for reading challenges.

The mystery is 5 stars. The teen angst romance thing is 2 stars. The whole stupid part of her not doing anything for her future, lying to friends, and the ending things she does? Negative stars!

Oh Nelly, this one got me. I loved this take on an English country house murder, and regardless of *waves hands* events, I still kind of want to be in The Nine? Stevie Bell might just be my favorite fictional detective. #yalit #yamurdermystery

I enjoyed revisiting these characters solving a cold case in London. I was proven right about the nature of one character. The mystery is exceptional in this one.

Lots to like in this latest installment in the Truly Devious series. This one has everything you would expect—Stevie Bell watching & observing, & solving crimes, senior year drama, long distance relationships, jealousy, murder, a cold case that needs to be solved & a decaying country estate which is the perfect setting for bringing everything together. And then…no spoilers but let‘s just say I would like the next book now please…

I didn't really much like this installment in the Truly Devious series. It moved very slowly, especially the first half. It really should have been edited down into a tighter narrative. Stevie and her friends all seemed pretty down throughout the story, which left me feeling depressed by the end. It just wasn't the fun story that I was expecting

New year, same favorite way to start the day—quiet reading time with a new book and a cup of tea while everyone else is still in bed. Stevie Bell and whatever trouble she finds herself in as she solves another mystery is the first book of 2023.

I need to read Nine Liars soon, too. I wanted to reread the whole Truly Devious series first, but I don‘t think I have patience for that 😅

The mystery in this novel was riveting! The suspense built up well over the course of the book, and I literally couldn‘t stop reading. Additionally, the characters that we already knew and loved were developed further. I adore the fact that Stevie is a flawed, yet relatable character. Finally, the cherry on top of the cake, there is an ace (asexual) character in this book! Overall, there is not a single thing I didn‘t love about this novel!

Let's be honest - the "Truly Devious" series was perfection. And when you find a series of books that is just so good, one of your fears as a reader is that the author will do something to ruin it. Luckily, Maureen Johnson is a sorceress and has managed to give us yet another Stevie Bell book that is so crafty, so smart, and so endearing that when you finish it, all you want to do is start it all over again! Can't wait to see what she does next!
