Traveling with Pomegranates
Traveling with Pomegranates: A Mother and Daughter Journey to the Sacred Places of Greece, Turkey, and France | Sue Monk Kidd, Ann Kidd Taylor
An introspective and beautiful dual memoir by the #1 New York Times bestselling novelist and her daughterSue Monk Kidd has touched millions of readers with her novels The Secret Life of Bees and The Mermaid Chair and with her acclaimed nonfiction. In this intimate dual memoir, she and her daughter, Ann, offer distinct perspectives as a fifty-something and a twenty-something, each on a quest to redefine herself and to rediscover each other. Between 1998 and 2000, Sue and Ann travel throughout Greece and France. Sue, coming to grips with aging, caught in a creative vacuum, longing to reconnect with her grown daughter, struggles to enlarge a vision of swarming bees into a novel. Ann, just graduated from college, heartbroken and benumbed by the classic question about what to do with her life, grapples with a painful depression. As this modern-day Demeter and Persephone chronicle the richly symbolic and personal meaning of an array of inspiring figures and sites, they also each give voice to that most protean of connections: the bond of mother and daughter. A wise and involving book about feminine thresholds, spiritual growth, and renewal, Traveling with Pomegranates is both a revealing self-portrait by a beloved author and her daughter, a writer in the making, and a momentous story that will resonate with women everywhere.

Super heavy on the introspection. But I think I gained something from reading it.

I have been in Greece and was with my daughter for a week. I thought this would be the perfect travel book. Sadly, i found it difficult to get through. I can't recommend this one. 2 🌟

Decent but fell a bit short for my current reading mood. Sue Monk Kidd and her daughter travel to Greece, France and Turkey on a mainly religious / spiritual theme. What I liked were the thoughts about aging and how life changes as you move from one phase to another.

1. Yes!

2. I would say that only about 10% of what I read is non-fiction.

3. History, Women‘s Studies, Politics. I read a lot of non-fiction related to the Holocaust.

4. The Hare With Amber Eyes by Edmund de Waal.

5. Tagged - but this was only a So-So travel memoir. My next non-fiction read will be The Badass Librarians of Timbuktu!

thea-block I‘ve been wanting to read this one! I look forward to hearing how you like it when you‘re done 😊 6y

I thought I was a queen of introspection, but this book provided too much navel gazing even for me.

There were some beautiful thoughts and images, but overall I found the pace too slow and the themes too repetitive.

This was my third choice in a row that turned out to be not my cup of tea.

The next book better be the equivalent of a pretty darn good cup of tea.

Beautiful.

I feel this tension.

Cathythoughts Beautiful writing... 6y
Libby1 @Cathythoughts - I have to ration my reading of this book at the moment because the beauty of the writing and the emotional impact of it makes me tearful! 6y
SamanthaMarie I love this. Sue Monk Kidd is one of my favorites, I'm reading through her Dance of the Dissident Daughter right now and I find her writing and her honest appraisal of all things in life, very refreshing. 6y

I really liked it... Despite the facets I wasn't crazy about. I think if helps if you've read at least one of SMK's books on spirituality, like When the Heart Waits, just to understand her voice and way of looking at the world a bit better. As many other readers, I too started getting annoyed with all these trips these ladies can afford to take and how oblivious they seem to be of their affluence. ⬇

MommyWantsToReadHerBook Criticisms aside, I especially liked Sue's parts and hope I've learned something for my own slow acceptance that I'm getting older and one day I'll be truly old (Lord willing) - sometimes the thought already scares the crap out of me. The incredible focus on the Marys was a challenge to my little Protestant soul lol, but gave me a lot to think about and examine theologically. 7y
BarbaraJean I borrowed this from Sarah during our last months in SA! I remember feeling like it was just okay. I have a feeling the parts on aging would resonate more with me now—ha! I have When the Heart Waits on my shelf and should pick it up one of these days. (edited) 7y

Things have been a bit rough and I'm so behind on reading Litsy updates that I can never really catch up. Been Facebooking too much and doing Litsy or actually reading too little when I have downtime... Not in a flourishing place right now. My husband is away for two nights until tomorrow morning and I know having spouses travel is normal for almost everyone but he's never been away from us! Anyway, my daughter was adorable today 😊

TrishB I‘m the one that travels in our house. I dislike it even when I know everything‘s fine!! 7y
MommyWantsToReadHerBook @TrishB I can't imagine being away from my family, hugs to you! 7y

MommyWantsToReadHerBook @BarbaraJean thank you! Man, I miss you. You Americans would probably laugh at me because part of my stress has been cleaning my own flat and doing all the ironing for weeks because there was a massive bus strike... But for me it was stressful and wonderful to have help again today! 7y
BarbaraJean I miss you, too! No laughing here... stress is stress! I‘m just lazy and buy clothes I don‘t have to iron... 😂 7y

28/52 - 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 - I ❤️ memoirs and I ❤️ travel, so this book was full of great stories about person growth, reflection, and finding ones self. It was full of great profound thoughts about aging and wisdom. I really enjoyed learning from Sue and Ann! Plus, I am going to Greece in 2019 so I read about some places I would like to visit.

Being invisible to others??? Not sure I like feeling invisible, but maybe in 5-10 years, I will feel like author. Today, I am contemplating taking a sick day because I feel terrible and I really just want to nap and read before my busy weekend. Being invisible at work today sounds fine.

Vertabrain I read this years ago, and it‘s definitely worth the expense! Sue Monk Kidd is one of my favorite writers. Her prose is exquisite, and you can tell that she takes her time with each word. 💕 7y

Spontaneous purchase for $1.99. I loved Secret Life of Bees and Mermaids Chair, so far I am liking this one, too. It is very different from her novels, a great story about her personal journey.

#TBRtemptation post! While we're on the subject of writers writing about themselves... Here's another one to add to your TBR (I'm bad, aren't I? 😈😆). A dual memoir by Sue Monk Kidd & her daughter, Ann Kidd Taylor. A 50-something and a 20-something attempting to redefine themselves & rediscover their relationship with one another. Maybe I should re-post this before Mother's Day as a friendly reminder 😊. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎
