Victory City | Salman Rushdie

The epic tale of a woman who breathes a fantastical empire into existence, only to be consumed by it over the centuries--from the transcendent imagination of Booker Prize-winning, internationally bestselling author Salman Rushdie In the wake of an unimportant battle between two long-forgotten kingdoms in fourteenth-century southern India, a nine-year-old girl has a divine encounter that will change the course of history. After witnessing the death of her mother, the grief-stricken Pampa Kampana becomes a vessel for her namesake, the goddess Pampa, who begins to speak out of the girl's mouth. Granting her powers beyond Pampa Kampana's comprehension, the goddess tells her that she will be instrumental in the rise of a great city called Bisnaga--literally victory city--the wonder of the world. Over the next two hundred and fifty years, Pampa Kampana's life becomes deeply interwoven with Bisnaga's, from its literal sowing out of a bag of magic seeds to its tragic ruination in the most human of ways: the hubris of those in power. Whispering Bisnaga and its citizens into existence, Pampa Kampana attempts to make good on the task that the goddess set for her: to give women equal agency in a patriarchal world. But all stories have a way of getting away from their creator, and Bisnaga is no exception. As years pass, rulers come and go, battles are won and lost, and allegiances shift, the very fabric of Bisnaga becomes an ever more complex tapestry--with Pampa Kampana at its center. Brilliantly styled as a translation of an ancient epic, this is a saga of love, adventure, and myth that is in itself a testament to the power of storytelling.

It seems somehow unreal that life goes on in Israel and the mail system continues to work smoothly.
I was completely surprised and deeply moved by this lovely gift of Cindy. I miss her a lot and I will use the #52BookClub24 Book Journal and read the new Rushdie and think of her and wishing for an end to the violence in Israel and Palestina ☮️ 💜

Pickpick

I finally finished a #authoramonth! This was a soft pick for me. Though Rushdie is one of my favorite contemporary writers, this was not my favorite. Masterfully written, just not for me.

gossamerchild I guess I should mention that my passed out cat is Huxley. He's kinda weird and sleeps like a dog :-D 8mo

I loved this and was very surprised it didn‘t get nominated for the Booker Prize.

It was my first Rushdie read and it has certainly inspired me to read more. (When I get time of course! 😝)

Starting in 14th century India, it‘s a 200 year epic saga covering the birth and death of a city, through the eyes of Pampa Kampana, who has become the mouthpiece of a goddess and is inextricably linked with the city and its inhabitants.

Cinfhen Great review! I too was surprised and disappointed that this book didn‘t make the Booker 23 Longlist 9mo
sarahbarnes Great review! I really liked Midnight‘s Children. I‘ll have to add this to my list. 9mo
BookwormM I am waiting for my library reserve on this. Midnight‘s Children is brilliant. 9mo

Tagged book: Kindle edition Page 119

“She doesn‘t say in her book how long they rode, how many nights and days, or in what direction. So we cannot say for sure where the Forest of Women was located, or if some part of it stands there still.

#WondrousWednesday Everyone is tagged!

#BookMail #BuyBuyBookDepository 📚Thought I‘d try the newest one from Salman Rushdie even though my track record with him is 0-3 😅

TrishB You‘re very good! Authors get 2 chances from me. 11mo
Cinfhen Honestly @TrishB it was meant to be an IRL bookclub pick but it ultimately got nixed 😬 11mo
Cinfhen I‘m gonna save it for #AAM 🤓 11mo

Readerann I just bought this, so will be curious what you think. I really loved Midnight‘s Children. 11mo
BarbaraBB I used to love Rushdie (and I mean LOVE) but I didn‘t keep up with his tempo and lost him somewhere along the way. But I am very interested in what you‘ll think of his newest - and probably last one 😳 11mo
Centique @BarbaraBB me too Barbara! He was my favourite modern author when I was in Uni but his later books haven‘t grabbed me. Fingers crossed for this one @Cinfhen 11mo
Cinfhen I‘m nervous about this one @Readerann @BarbaraBB @Centique but im hoping I can make a connection 😅 11mo
Megabooks I‘ve never read him, so I‘m excited for author a month later this year! 11mo
Cinfhen Yeah #AAM will be a good opportunity to try this book @Megabooks but I don‘t have high expectations 11mo

Unsurprisingly, Rushdie‘s new book is beautiful. A sweeping, imaginative epic. I couldn‘t put it down.

The premise of this sounded so intriguing to me, but I couldn‘t get into it at all. Back to the library it goes!

BarbaraBB That is a pity. He has written such fantastic novels but the more recent ones don‘t seem to live up to his earlier books. 14mo
batsy @BarbaraBB A long but super interesting critique of Rushdie's later work, if you're ever in the mood for it 🙂 https://www.thedriftmag.com/after-the-fatwa/ 14mo
BarbaraBB @batsy Thanks I am definitely in the mood for that. I used to love Salman Rushdie. Until Shalimar the Clown I think. 14mo

Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB I actually haven‘t read his earlier works. I‘ve only read The Golden House. I struggled with the first half of that one but loved the second half. I‘m not sure if he‘s for me or not. I don‘t feel a strong urge to investigate his backlist. 14mo
BarbaraBB I can see why. Maybe the article @batsy attached will give you some inside on the kind of author he is and in his backlist. 14mo
Centique @batsy that was a fascinating article thanks Suba! I loved Midnights Children and Shame when I read them years ago but have given up on two books since. I will give him one more try I think…. Or I may just reread Shame 🤷🏻‍♀️ 13mo
batsy @Centique Glad to share, I found it so fascinating! I've yet to read Midnight's Children and I really struggled through The Moor's Last Sigh. But I liked The Satanic Verses a lot. Feels like there's something amazing going with his earlier books, but the bombast in his style, the maximalism, is what I find hard to get through. Though I do find some of his later novels simply off-putting in description so it was nice to read something about it 🙂 13mo
