A Northern Light
A Northern Light | Jennifer Donnelly
Sixteen-year-old Mattie Gokey has a word for everything, and big dreams but little hope of seeing them come true. She collects words, stores them up as a way of fending off the hard truths of her life, the truths that she can't write down in stories. The fresh pain of her mother's death. The burden of raising her sisters while her father struggles over his brokeback farm. The mad welter of feelings Mattie has for handsome but dull Royal Loomis, who says he wants to marry her. And the secret dreams that keep her going--visions of finishing high school, going to college in New York City, becoming a writer.Desperate for money, she takes a job at the Glenmore, where hotel guest Grace Brown entrusts her with the task of burning a secret bundle of letters. But when Grace's drowned body is fished from Big Moose Lake, Mattie discovers that the letters could reveal the grim truth behind a murder. Set in 1906 in the Adirondack Mountains, against the backdrop of the murder that inspired Theodore Dreiser'sAn American Tragedy, this Printz Honor-winning coming-of-age novel effortlessly weaves romance, history, and a murder mystery into something moving, and real, and wholly original.

This was between a pick and a so-so… the characters are a bit stereotypical, but I ultimately enjoyed the story and it‘s not badly written. Historical fiction based around a real-life murder in the Adirondacks in 1906, it‘s really more of a YA coming-of-age about a smart girl from a poor family.

This was my #SetInAHotel book for #Booked2022 and had been on my shelf waaaaay too long.

⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Teresereading I found it fascinating 2y

Mattie takes a job at an upscale, yet #RemoteInn in the Adirondacks. The body of another young woman is pulled from the lake & Mattie is faced with keeping or sharing her secrets. In flashbacks we learn about both women. Especially touching is Mattie's relationship with a childhood friend, an African-American boy, with whom she shares a love of learning new words. Pic of a few word games in the house.#SavvySettings @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Eggs

My first YA novel - historical fiction. It started out strong, but there are just too many stories that the author tried to squeeze into one book. The main character is well developed but also too stereotypical - the smart girl that wants an education so desperately ... on the other hand, the target audience is not adults, but teenagers... maybe I'm too old to appreciate this book.

I absolutely loved this book! A teacher recommended it to me and I am so glad I read it! I usually wouldn‘t have chosen it for myself but I am so glad I did! It is a historical fiction that also deals with a murder mystery! I now also have a new favourite author! I highly recommend! #bibliophile #mustread #jenniferdonnelly #booknerd #bookworm #historicalfiction

Thank you so much for the awesome #FeedAReader package @PatriciaU ! The book is right up my alley, and I absolutely love the cutting board (and have been wanting to get one this size!). As a chipaholic the clips will definitely be put to good use! The coffee sounds delish, I‘ve been needing a new spatula, and I can‘t wait to try your local spices you sent! The description of your recipes sounds great, and maybe I‘m blind but I didn‘t see them 👇🏻

JenlovesJT47 In the box. Could you email them to me at JenlovesJT47swaps@gmail.com when you get a chance? The stuffing recipe sounds amazing and I‘d love to try it for Thanksgiving. Thank you again for an awesome box! The pin is going on my book bag. 🤗😘❤️ 6y
JenlovesJT47 P.S. @MinDea I‘m working on my box for my Sept-Oct person and should have it mailed by early next week, sorry for being late! 6y
PatriciaU @JenlovesJT47 did I really not put the recipes in there? Well, duh! I will email them tonight! So sorry! 6y

The best part of my day was finding these two in a little free library / book box 📚
A Gathering Light is not my usual genre – it‘s a murder mystery and I‘m a wimp 😂 But the plots of both sounded interesting and I like the covers, so I gave them a new home 🙃
Have you read either? Happy Wednesday 💙

So much darkness and ugliness in this story, but also a lot of love and kindness. I tend to appreciate characters in books more than plot and I think this is a perfect example of that. The people are just so real -- flawed and struggling and conflicted. Hardly anyone is strictly good or bad. I'm not sure I could even articulate why I enjoyed this book so much but I really, really did. Jennifer Donnelly's backlist, here I come!

I read A Northern Light several years ago and enjoyed it quite a bit. It's a lovely coming-of-age novel with history, romance, and murder. Dreaming of East is a book on my tbr about western women from the 1700s to the early 1900's who went traveling in search of freedom in the middle east. #compasspoints #sideprofiles #jubilantjuly

Not quite #TheRiver, but it does involve a lake, and the first book that popped into my mind for today's prompt. Donnelly writes an amazing account of the murder that inspires Dreiser's An American Tragedy. For this version, Donnelly's teen character Mattie discovers a murder has in fact taken place. I enjoy Donnelly's writing style; good YA historical fiction. Couldn't resist taking #Zeke's picture with the book. #RockinMay #catsoflitsy

A day late for the #readjanuary challenge: #epistolary.

This unexpected novel rocked my world. Although it's not strictly epistolary, the letters in the book add to the story in a way that is fresh and fascinating. The unconventional storytelling kept me guessing and the astute narrator had me completely enthralled. Donnelly is an exceptional writer. Super highly recommend.

EllieDottie That is a beautiful cover! And I love the name! 8y
saresmoore @EllieDottie It really lives up to the cover art, too. I had no idea what to expect going into this book, so I won't give anything away. It's special and it stuck with me. 8y

I relate to this so much. Back in high school (I was homeschooled) I showed my science co-op teacher a collection of short stories, inspired by Edgar Allan Poe. I didn't get praise or constructive criticism. I got her telling my mother I was writing morbid stories which got me in trouble. Lost my trust and respect for her that day.

I really enjoyed, and was pleasantly surprised by this book. The writing quality is great, the story is interesting and written with an honesty about life in 1906 that is not often seen in historical YA. I feel as if the writer put a lot of herself into the main character. Definite pick.
