This sweet, enemies-to-lovers debut rom-com filled with Chinese astrology will undoubtedly prove to be a perfect match with readers of Helen Hoang, Jasmine Guillory, and Helena Hunting. Always a matchmaker, never a match... Olivia Huang Christenson is excited-slash-terrified to be taking over her grandmother's matchmaking business. But when she learns that a new dating app has made her P Po's traditional Chinese zodiac approach all about "animal attraction," her emotions skew more toward furious-slash-outraged. Especially when L.A.'s most-eligible bachelor Bennett O'Brien is behind the app that could destroy her family's legacy . . . Liv knows better than to fall for any guy, let alone an infuriatingly handsome one who believes that traditions are meant to be broken. As the two businesses go head to head, Bennett and Liv make a deal: they'll find a match for each other--and whoever falls in love loses. But Liv is dealing with someone who's already adept at stealing business ideas . . . so what's stopping him from stealing her heart too?

I vacillated between being irritated at Olivia or being bored by her. Either way, I've had enough. #Next #HailTheBail

I don't dislike this book enough to stop reading it (yet) but I'm not loving it either, mostly because I can't see myself (or anyone I know) behaving the way Liv has. 🫣 Hopefully it will get better for me as I go. I am pretty curious to see how she melds her traditions with Bennet's anything goes ways.
In other news... football is back! Go Broncos! After 8 losing seasons in a row I'm hoping this is the year things finally change for us. 🤞🏻🏈🐴

I get the feeling I'm soon going to be suffering some severe second- hand embarrassment on Olivia's behalf 🫣

This was a book I wanted to like more than I did. Part of the problem is that the whole point is that Olivia runs a business where she matches people based on their Chinese Zodiac signs and making sure that her clients are paired with compatible signs. We are told the reasons for why she's so absolutely die hard about this, but despite the fact that we spend the whole book in Liv's head, I just never could quite figure out her obsession with ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) compatibility, to the exclusion of everything else. Like I get it because the author told me why, but I never FELT it, if that makes sense haha This book maybe needed a prologue of everything going south over the incompatible match, or a more detailed flashback, or something besides a couple paragraphs summing up what was apparently so emotionally devastating that it completely changed Olivia's entire life. I also wish we could have ⬇ 6mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) gotten Bennett's POV!!

However, I really liked both Olivia and Bennett and I LOVED that they actually communicated like adults (usually) and that the author didn't try to throw in third act drama, because Bennett already knows most of Olivia's “secrets“ early on (like who she is, for instance). I get really stressed when one of the characters needs to make a big “confession“ or when the whole relationship is built on one of person ⬇
6mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) telling lies at the beginning, so I liked that we got all that out of the way and were able to just move forward like regular people.

Overall, I did like this one, but frankly I've been in an absolutely horrible reading slump this month where everything just makes me say “eh. 3.5* It was okay“ I just don't seem to be reading anything that really gives me the sparks. So. 3.5* It was okay 😂

Lauredhel A shame about the slump! Does a drastic genre change help you with those? 6mo
TheAromaofBooks @lauredhel - Sometimes. For me, reading slumps are usually because I'm feeling stressed about life, so sometimes I need to switch to thrillers or mysteries, which weirdly don't stress me as much as relationship drama in romances 😂 And most often I pick up old favorites because they are comforting and reassuring since I already know where they are headed. I don't worry too much; I always get reading-obsessed again at some point haha 6mo
julieclair Great review! I have had the opposite of your 3.5⭐️ slump this month. I‘m really stingy with 5⭐️ ratings, and I‘ve been tossing them around like confetti this month! 🤷‍♀️ 6mo

Even knowing at the meet cute what the HEA will be, it‘s fun for me to read a romcom when the path to get from here to there is unique. But this - digital dating app vs traditional matchmaker, attraction to rival to client, miscommunication to love - offered nothing unique. Liv was a brat, and the amount of times the word compatible was used became my fingers down a chalkboard.

This was a solid 3⭐️ read for me. A light hearted rom-com. A perfect read if you're looking for something light and easy. Whilst it hasn't made my keeper shelf it did entertain. #LittensLoveRomance

We drove across state to pick up our new show vehicle... only to find out there was a problem and we can't get it until late next week. It's been really stressful, so I'm giving myself the rest of the day off and am going to wrap myself in a blanket and read on the porch until the sun goes away.

It‘s been an admittedly rough, discombobulating week as I was laid off last Thursday. The last week has been about getting ducks in rows. This rainy day is for reading (racing against that 1 day left on loan), being gentle with myself, and working toward the future.

swishandflick So sorry to hear that! 2y
mdemanatee @swishandflick thanks; thought I was out of the woods after surviving multiple previous rounds but alas 2y
swishandflick @mdemanatee my company recently had a large layoff and I've been in a constant state of anxiety ever since, so I feel that! 2y
mdemanatee @swishandflick it‘s so much right now. Sending good thoughts too because it‘s tough to work through that anxiety! 2y

Just as Olivia is set to take over her family‘s Chinese Zodiac matchmaking service, new competition comes to town in the form of a dating app that also uses the Zodiac.
The MC has a horrible case of tunnel vision when it comes to “incompatible” matches which is weird considering the number of successful incompatible matches are around her. She‘s stubborn and irrational a lot of the time.
Some things were aggravating, others were cute. It was ok.

🌚 Did I like the MC? No, she is rude, irrational and frankly just not the brightest.

🌕 Did I love the Chinese zodiac theme? Very much.

🌝 Do I think we need a dating app based on our Chinese zodiac traits? Yes, absolutely! 😄

🌛 Have I been called over-critical: Constantly.

Most of the story didn't make sense, especially some parallels between the MCs were illogical and obviously not thought through but necessary for them to connect.

Olivia might just be the most annoying person ever. On the other hand, I like that this is a RomCom, where the female MC is deeply flawed and not perfect and described as pretty every 2 minutes😅

I know it's probably unrealistic, but I think her love interest deserves so much better and is a rational and kind person, I sort of hope they won't end up together😅

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

This was light and sweet! I loved learning about Chinese astrology and was inspired to read more about it. (I‘m a Metal Horse!) I also enjoyed the incorporation of food. Olivia‘s actions were a little cringey sometimes, but it was a cute romance! 🎧

I feel like the story needed an other story line but it was charming and cute. Definitely a book to read in Summer on the beach. I enjoyed following both characters on their date. I would recommend.

This book was cute. I enjoyed the story pretty well, but I will admit that the dialogue got too cheesy in parts (a lot of parts). Overall it's wholesome, no spicy/sexy scenes, & family is incredibly important to the main characters. I wouldn't read it again, but I'd recommend it if you're in the mood for a rom com and learning more about the Chinese zodiac.

It was a tricky work week and I was looking for a sweet romance. The concept of this one is great: two matchmakers who work with the Chinese Zodiac are business rivals who feel a spark between them. It wasn‘t steamy at all - which is great for me, but the MC was less likeable than I was hoping so I wasn‘t fully invested.

A very cute, very fast read that incorporates the Chinese zodiac. She's a little bit too judgement and inflexible for me, but the story was grabbed my attention and I zipped right though the book. While I enjoyed the pace of the book, I do feel like things happened very quickly and could have been fleshed out a bit more.
