This was my #Bookspin pick for November. I got through it in one sitting. I was completely engaged while reading this timeless story.

I couldn't find the Will Moses edition in the database. I've never read this classic before now, but it has been in my library since it was published in 1999. The dust cover was laminated and scotch tape is barely holding the labels down. I have so much to learn from this book, but oddly I see myself in the story. Funny not funny...

One of the ways my reading has changed during the pandemic is that I'm reading more short stories. Limited attention span, I guess. I've been working my way through this list from Lit Hub. Many of these are new and very interesting to me. Plus several suggestions of what should be more iconic these days.

They also have a list of the most frequently anthologized short stories. Linked to from the article. (see comments for link ⬇ )

RachelAmphlett That‘s SO interesting! I wanted to write more short stories this year so in turn of course I‘ve been reading a lot more - and I‘d forgotten how much I enjoy them. I find too that the short story form lets me discover genres and styles I wouldn‘t normally read in novel-length books (edited) 3y
DrexEdit @RachelAmphlett same! I love finding new writers to read via their short stories. And reading those I would rather keep to a short experience. 😄 3y
RachelAmphlett @DrexEdit agree - sometimes the short story says enough and you don‘t need any other info. Thanks for posting the link - I‘m going to take a look at that! 3y
Tanisha_A Thanks for sharing this! 🙂 3y

I dug through my book haul last night to see which one I wanted to read 1st. I chose this one because (confession) I hated reading until college. I missed out on so much, & when I was studying for the Praxis test it said Washington Irving is the father of American literature. I was like who is that?! So, Rip Van Winkle is up first!

Also, Winston jumped up seconds after this was taken and licked the whipped cream off my cocoa. 😂😬

Bookzombie 😂 about Winston! 4y
Rachel.Rencher @Bookzombie He can be a little stinker 😂 4y
Billypar Didn't it feel great to be re-introduced to reading as an adult? If you asked my family, they'd say I loved to read my whole life. But that's only because I did it at all - as a kid I prioritzed tv and videogames, and in my 20s, movies, tv, music, and the internet. Putting reading first in recreation time in recent years has been so rewarding! 4y

Sweetkokoro Can I just say, I have the same cup only with the letter A for my name. I have never seen anyone else with a cup from that collection haha. 4y
Rachel.Rencher @Billypar Yes! That's exactly how I feel. My mom says I was never a reader, but she'd devour philosophy books and then want to engage me in discussions about Nietzsche when I was like 10, and I was like shush and just let me read A Series of Unfortunate Events, woman! So, yeah I hated the pressure and shunned it until I was on my own. 🙊 I still don't talk to her about what I read. 😂 4y
Rachel.Rencher @Sweetkokoro Me, either! I have so many Target mugs... I collect those almost as fervently as books. 😬☕ 4y

Picked up a library hold today. Super fun to find this inside. #BookNerdBliss

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Makes you wonder where the book was from 70 to 91...👻 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Maybe Rip Van Winkle fell asleep reading it in 70 and didn‘t wake up to return it until 91? 😂 (edited) 5y

A story that is quite timeless. One of my favorite folklore stories of all time. A story about a man who falls asleep and his whole world changes around him. The author does a great job of making the reader feel like they are right there.

Imagine waking up after 20 years like Irving's Rip. This statue from Irvington, New York got me into thinking what I will be doing if I sleep now and wake up in 2039. Good Lord! The horror of it.

IamIamIam Serial Reader is so much fun! Unfortunately, I started at a rough time of year and for me, at least, December is never a good time to get involved in new things. 🤣 5y
Carolyn11215 I have to get back to serial reader...I didn‘t finish my downloaded Frankenstein. 5y

A little spin on one of my favorite tales involving a #deepsleep 👌 I'm mesmerized by how Irving's writing reflects the political and social changes involved in the birth of the nation that is the US. I really recommend reading the original 'Rip Van Winkle'

#SeptemberDanes Rip Van Winkle was not only #sleepingmydayaway after drinking some liquor from strange bearded men in the mountains, in fact he slept the years away and missed the American Revolution action.

Kalalalatja That is quite a nap 😴😴😴 6y
Cinfhen Perfect choice and I still have NOT read this American classic #NoExcuse (edited) 6y

#GetMovin #Thunderstruck

I couldn't think of a good book for this theme but I was thinking about thunder & being scared of it as a child & being told by my dad that the loud rumbling was caused by giants bowling in the hills behind our house. That made me think of Rip Van Winkle & the strangely-dressed men playing nine-pins in the mountains... & here we are. 🤔😆BTW-is the visual of giants bowling really supposed to make kids feel better?!👹🎳👹

ReadZenRites They look like nightmare lawn ornaments come to life to me 😱... and giants, you say?😳 No, that doesn‘t sound like a soothing image to me! 6y
Cinfhen Hahaha!! I like the way your mind works 6y
epsitawithane I'd read it when I was 10 6y
CaitZ We were told it was angels bowling in heaven. Not as scary as giants. 6y

I re-read this on serial reader. I guess it‘s not as I remember. My goal is to read 20 classics on that format this year. This was my first. #finishingfebruary

In the TBR list since the Angloamerican Culture classes at uni in 2011. It's the cornerstone of the unwilling time travel genre and it is an incredibile quick and simple read. But I did not find the wonder in this short story, probably because it took me so much time to decide to pick it up.
I definitely will go and read some extra critical work about it to understand fully its meaning and give justice! #TBR #2017readingchallenge

Lazy man goes into the woods with his dog to get away from wife's bickering, gets drunk, sleeps 20 years and comes back to a free America.

American folklore gem.

This is my second Washington Irving story and I can't say I'm a fan. The first 2/3 of this short story was slow and boring. ⭐️⭐️
