Water | John Boyne
23 posts | 20 read | 39 to read
The first thing Vanessa Carvin does when she arrives on the island is change her name. To the locals, she is Willow Hale, a solitary outsider escaping Dublin to live a hermetic existence in a small cottage, not a notorious woman on the run from her past. But scandals follow like hunting dogs. And she has some questions of her own to answer. If her ex-husband is really the monster everyone says he is, then how complicit was she in his crimes? Escaping her old life might seem like a good idea but the choices she has made throughout her marriage have consequences. Here, on the island, Vanessa must reflect on what she did - and did not do. Only then can she discover whether she is worthy of finding peace at all.

Oh, this was good! Actually, I think it's the best of his that I've read, partly because he has a defter touch with the foreshadowing here than in some others. I enjoyed the telling of this from the wife's point of view and her anguish re questioning her complicity/"stupidity".
I want to read "Earth" now!

quietlycuriouskate JB clearly does not subscribe to the "save the cat" school of storytelling. Not sure why the poor cat had to die; as an emblem of toxic masculinity, perhaps? That's an unfair burden to put on the blameless creature, if so! 1w
squirrelbrain I‘ve read Earth and Fire and they‘re not *quite* as good as this, but still fabulous. 1w
Cathythoughts Nice review 👍🏻 I enjoyed this one too. 1w

5/5 🌟

Seeing this book everywhere, I finally decided to pick it up—and wow, I‘m so glad I did! A fantastic read from start to finish. A beautifully written tale of guilt, regrets, life choices, and coming to terms with the consequences of our actions. Highly recommend!

I appreciated the pacing of this short novel. Slowly but surely you learn the story behind the woman who arrives on an island off the west coast of Ireland, who cuts her hair and seeks to isolate herself from the residents. It‘s a moving story. The guilt of not fully seeing something going on around you and the blame associated with that. … I‘m trying to find out why booksellers in the US can‘t purchase this for their shelves but Amazon can.

BkClubCare I will ask my favorite indie store. 1mo
Suet624 @BkClubCare because I won‘t buy a book from amazon I ended up getting my copy from Blackwell‘s. Free shipping and everything. 😊 1mo
BkClubCare @Suet624 - good to know. Do you keep books for your library? Or …. 1mo

Megabooks Cindy has been sending me this series as she reads them. I loved but Water and Earth. I can't wait for Fire! 1mo
BarbaraBB You‘ve been reading a lot. I hope you‘ve loved it as much as I did! 1mo
Suet624 @BarbaraBB I‘ve finished two books since reading this one and I still think of Willow/Vanessa and her situation. Loved it. 1mo
Suet624 @BkClubCare do you mean do I keep them after I read them? Generally, yes. But if I purchase a book it‘s often second hand, through library book sales or online (Better World Books). 1mo
BarbaraBB 😅 1mo
Suet624 @BarbaraBB reading is seriously the only thing I know to do right now - and to stay off social media. 1mo
BkClubCare @Suet624 - yes, that is what I meant 😆 I don‘t tend to hang on to my read books. Most of the books in my house are waiting patiently for me to read them eventually. 1mo
Suet624 @BkClubCare Oh, I have boxes and shelves of books I own and haven't read yet. It's become a problem I want to read them all but I also want to grab the new books from the library. The library generally wins. Trying to make a concerted effort to change that in the coming year because I would, in fact, like to give some of my older books away. Can't do that until I've read them! :) 1mo
Suet624 @BkClubCare what do you do with the books you‘ve read? 1mo
BkClubCare @Suet624 - give them away, usually. I work with the Friends of the Library bookstore - most go there and to library book swaps. 1mo
Suet624 @BkClubCare you‘re the reason I have so many books! 😂 1mo
BkClubCare @Suet624 - one of my penpals mentioned that she enjoyed James by PE so much she intends to purchase her own copy so I offered to send her mine. I buy too many HOT books when I need them NOW 🤣 I often swap books, too, with TOB followers. 1mo

Goodness, what a book. Very thankful to my local library for acquiring this and Earth so that I could read them! Not an easy read, but are any of Boyne‘s books light and fluffy? I loved this.

I really enjoyed this one. Set on an island off of Galway. Where the water is all around and healing. I loved the descriptions of island life. I have Earth ready to go now too.

‘Water has been the undoing of me. It has been the undoing of my family. We swim in it in the womb. We are composed of it. We drink it. We are drawn to it throughout our lives , more than mountains deserts or canyons. But it is terrible. Water kills. ‘

BarbaraBB Glad you liked it. Earth is so good too! 2mo
Cathythoughts @BarbaraBB He‘s so readable! Looking forward to Earth 👍🏻 2mo

5 Stars • "Water" by John Boyne follows Vanessa Carvin, who renames herself Willow Hale, as she escapes to an Irish island to flee her past. Her husband, Brendan, was imprisoned for child abuse, and she seeks solitude to escape public judgment and confront her own complicity. The novel explores themes of identity, isolation, and redemption through Willow's interactions with islanders and her internal struggles. ⬇️

suvata The narrative uses water as a metaphor for cleansing and change. Ultimately, Willow finds a path toward healing and self-forgiveness, marking a hopeful conclusion to her journey. 3mo

What a wonderful book. How I love John Boyne. And how I felt for Vanessa and her trauma, guilt, grief, and anger. The small Irish island community. All adds to a fabulous and sad experience, one I am glad to be a part of for an ample 160 pages. I can‘t wait for the other elements and have already purchased a copy of Earth!

squirrelbrain I think Water is the best, although Earth is also good. I haven‘t got far enough into Fire yet, although it‘s supposed to be very tough to read. 3mo
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain Can‘t wait! I‘ll bring Earth with me to Gladstone! It‘s a safe bet I think 🤞🏽 3mo
sarahbarnes I haven‘t read Boyne I don‘t think, but this sounds very good. 3mo

I wasn‘t sure how I was going to feel about this because I don‘t always get on with Boyne but I liked this very much and think it‘s an accomplished novella (novel?) Water does everything I like in a short, serious work of fiction. It‘s relentlessly bleak, direct, has many layers, characterises with complexity, resolves but doesn‘t solve, evokes emotion and place, and does it all with a brevity of expression.

John Boyne is a master at writing emotion. This book is short but says a lot. Looking at the roles of men and women, abuse, suicide, small town ideologies, and religion, this book crams a lot into its pages but is never preachy. It would make a fantastic book club pick. I love the idea of his Elements series and will definitely be getting the next one.

AmyG I liked this one, too. 9mo

A short book. Such a great story teller. Follows one character. I believe there are 2 more books to come . In the next one Earth we follow the life of one of the characters mentioned in this book. Clever. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Always great to read the latest Boyne. Can‘t wait for the next three elements. Boyne tackles the issues in life that hurts us the most, but in a way that you really want to read about them. The short book is so much more than just story. Boyne truly is one of the greatest storytellers ever. ❤️

As ever, another enthralling read from John Boyne, tackling a very dark subject.

It‘s only a short read and, whilst this means it packs a heavy punch, I do wish there had been space to explore some areas a bit further.

Willow Hale arrives on a tiny Irish island from Dublin, having changed her name. What is she hiding from and can she really ever escape?
