Dryland
Dryland | Sara Jaffe
It's 1992, and the world is caught up in the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the Balkan Wars, but for Julie Winter, 15, the news is noise. In an unnamed city in the Pacific Northwest, Julie moves through her days in a series of negatives: the skaters she doesn't think are cute, the Guatemalan backpack she doesn't buy at the craft fair, the umbrella she refuses to carry despite the incessant rain. Her family life is routine and restrained, and no one talks about Julie's older brother, a one-time Olympic hopeful swimmer who now lives in self-imposed exile in Berlin. Julie has never considered swimming herself, until Alexis, the swim team captain, tries to recruit her. It's a dare, and a flirtationand a chance for Julie to find her brother, or to finally let him go. Anything could happen when her body hits water.

It‘s 1992 and there are secrets in Julie‘s family. Her brother was once a talented swimmer on his way to the Olympics, but now he‘s disappeared. She makes a connection with his friend Ben to get answers. She‘s also questioning her feelings about other girls at a more difficult time than now. When a beautiful older girl asks her to join the swim team, Julie must face all her fears. Not quite YA, but definitely angst and flannel. #pop21 #advanced

squirrelbrain Love the cover! 💙 4y
Megabooks @squirrelbrain it‘s great! Lots of flannel in 1992. 😂 this is so embarrassing, but because I live in the south, I had a sleeveless flannel shirt circa 1993! I think I wore it over a tank top. Funny memories!! 4y
Lauram Angst and flannel- sounds like me in 1992! 4y

Ruthiella Flannel shirt and Doc Martin boots? ✅ 4y
Megabooks @Ruthiella I definitely had Docs. I even had black patent leather ones. I wore them to school dances!! 😂 4y
Cinfhen Angst and flannel needs to be a hashtag#️⃣ or a #Booked2022 prompt 🥰😘🥳 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen that would be a great prompt! 😂😂 #AngstAndFlannel2022 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I just saw the audiobook is available on audible plus. I won this book years ago and it has been with me through at least 2 moves. *i think* it is the oldest physical TBR book I have that‘s not in storage. Hence the pop prompt. But I‘m glad I got around to it! 4y
LibrarianToujours @Megabooks I still have the Docs I bought in 1995, actually wore them today! And because I live in the north, I still wear flannel 😆 4y
Megabooks @NHLibrarian I would‘ve kept mine if I hadn‘t gotten bunions (not due to the shoe, genetically predisposed). But! One of the people I follow on Instagram says they have wide widths now, so maybe I‘ll get a new pair! 🤔😊 4y
Megabooks @NHLibrarian and it is awesome they‘ve lasted that long!! 👍🏻 4y
Hooked_on_books What a fun cover! 4y
LibrarianToujours @Megabooks I remember my mom thought I was nuts for spending that much on such ugly shoes 😆 Back then, they were still made in England. 4y

1990s Portland: Grunge dominates the culture, it rains constantly, and the AIDS epidemic is at its peak. High schooler Julie joins the swim team at the invitation of a more popular girl and finds herself exploring her sexuality and learning more about her older brother, a former Olympic hopeful who now lives in Berlin and with whom she hardly talks. Sparely written but with emotional depth.

I liked this quick read, which was saturated in time and place in an effective and unsentimental way. I got it in a Book Riot box a while ago and finally got around to it.

erinreads I‘ve read the bottom two, so I vote for 7y
rubyslippersreads I just read and enjoyed 7y

kamoorephoto Dryland sounds pretty interesting! Never heard of it before! 7y
kamoorephoto Btw @callielafleur are you on Goodreads? 7y
claffy_reads @kamoorephoto I am, though at this point I'm only using it to keep track of my reading, rather than actively participating in discussions. My un on there is calliekl. 7y
claffy_reads @kamoorephoto @IheartYA @erinreads I just looked at the Goodreads rating for Dryland, and I'm a little nervous- it's 3.47, which is pretty low. If you ladies are still ok with it, I'll run with it! 7y
IheartYA I'm fine with whatever you decide 😊 7y
kamoorephoto @callielafleur Do you have any backups? 7y
kamoorephoto @callielafleur @IheartYA @erinreads I‘m still deciding!!! 😊 7y
claffy_reads @kamoorephoto @iheartya @erinreads I'm going to be at a bookstore today, I'll peruse for alternates! 😁 7y
kamoorephoto @callielafleur I was trying to look through your Goodreads list to see what you had already...and see what everyone else had already read 🧐 I have so many I‘m having a hard time deciding. Also are we writing IN the books, or in a journal? @IheartYA @erinreads 7y
claffy_reads @kamoorephoto I asked this earlier, some I wasn't sure. We are writing in the books, not in a journal. 7y
erinreads @callielafleur @kamoorephoto @IheartYA Yeah, we write in the books throughout it, so make sure whatever book you pick you don‘t mind all of the writing or you get a cheap second copy of it. And everyone should write in a different color so we can tell who is who throughout. 7y
kamoorephoto @erinreads @IheartYA @callielafleur Okay, I‘ve done two in succession: one writing in the book, the other in a journal so I had to make sure! Can I be blue?! 7y
IheartYA @erinreads @callielafleur. @kamoorephoto sure. Ok if I'm red? 😊 (feels like I'm playing the game Sorry lol) 7y
kamoorephoto 😹😹😹 7y
claffy_reads I claim purple!! 💜 7y
claffy_reads @kamoorephoto @erinreads @IheartYA OK, I grabbed a new book today. It has no reviews on Litsy, and not many of Goodreads. It sounds good to me. Thoughts? 7y
erinreads The new one sounds good to me! And I‘m going to be green! 💚 7y
IheartYA The Crying Rocks sounds intriguing. 👍 7y

The #rain prompt made me think of books set in places where it rains a lot, or at least more than it does where I live. I remembered this book, which is set in Portland, because the main character talks about how people who are really from Portland won't carry umbrellas. #jubilantjuly @RealLifeReading

A great capture of the anxiety of teendom, friendship, siblings and the early 90's. Clear and unsentimental- it was a good read.

This book has a meandering underwater quality to it...it picks us up on a wave and sets us back on another, no real arc or beginning or end and the effect is delightful. The characters are people, not archetypes and no one is villainous or even unlikeable. I've not actually read anything like it before. It's high school without (the typical, dramatic) angst, coming of age without (criminal, hateful, shocking) events.

Spiderfelt Nice review. I've been curious about this book, as I shelve it often at my library. 8y

Sad and beautiful and almost dreamlike. This is a book about sexual awakening and desire and homophobia, swimming and love and kindness and the universal need to feel understood
