The Spy Coast: A Thriller | Tess Gerritsen
19 posts | 17 read | 10 to read
A retired CIA operative in small-town Maine tackles the ghosts of her past in this fresh take on the spy thriller from New York Times bestselling author Tess Gerritsen. Former spy Maggie Bird came to the seaside village of Purity, Maine, eager to put the past behind her after a mission went tragically wrong. These days, she's living quietly on her chicken farm, still wary of blowback from the events that forced her early retirement. But when a body turns up in Maggie's driveway, she knows it's a message from former foes who haven't forgotten her. Maggie turns to her local circle of old friends--all retirees from the CIA--to help uncover the truth about who is trying to kill her, and why. This "Martini Club" of former spies may be retired, but they still have a few useful skills that they're eager to use again, if only to spice up their rather sedate new lives. Complicating their efforts is Purity's acting police chief, Jo Thibodeau. More accustomed to dealing with rowdy tourists than homicide, Jo is puzzled by Maggie's reluctance to share information--and by her odd circle of friends, who seem to be a step ahead of her at every turn. As Jo's investigation collides with the Martini Club's maneuvers, Maggie's hunt for answers will force her to revisit a clandestine career that spanned the globe, from Bangkok to Istanbul, from London to Malta. The ghosts of her past have returned, but with the help of her friends--and the reluctant Jo Thibodeau--Maggie might just be able to save the life she's built.

I was a fan of Rizzoli & Isles (both the books & the TV show), so when I saw this book was the start of a new series I knew I wanted to read it and was not disappointed. The characters were great, with a mix of older retirees and some young folk as well. I also really enjoyed both the settings (Maine and Europe). While the plot is serious, it was not without some humour to lighten things up. I look forward to more from 'The Martini Club'. 4.25/5

Catching some late afternoon winter sun . I finished this . It‘s a recent stand alone book of hers. I really enjoyed it. Kept me reading and I didn‘t guess anything. 👏👏👏.

Jeg Just read that it‘s the beginning of a series. That‘s great as I love the characters especially Maggie. Retired spys living in Maine. What fun. (edited) 5mo

This was a fun thriller featuring some retired spies whose past comes to their doorsteps in Maine. The main character, Maggie, was really great. This is sort of like The Thursday Murder Club but not played for laughs. I‘m looking forward to the next in the series.

4 Stars • Former CIA operative Maggie Bird seeks refuge in the seaside village of Purity, Maine, hoping to leave her tumultuous past behind after a mission went tragically wrong. She now lives quietly on her chicken farm, wary of any repercussions from her former enemies. When a body turns up in Maggie‘s driveway, she realizes it‘s time to turn to her local circle of old friends, all retirees from the CIA and part of the “Martini Club”, for help.

Bk2 of April is done! I absolutely loved this. From the author of Rizzoli & Isles series, it‘s the 1st in a new series called The Martini Club. A group of retired CIA agents living in a small seaside town in Maine are dragged back into action after a dead body is left in Maggie Birds driveway. Loved it, it‘s a more serious version of Killers Of A Certain Age or the movie RED. Highly recommended.🔫 #SeriesLove2024 #BookspinBingo #FourFoursIn24👇

Starting my 1st Tess Garrison book. I‘m enjoying the characters. I think I‘ve found another author & series to read. Apparently Tess realized that where she lives, a lot of spies 🕵🏻‍♀️ have retired in her community, and so this is what prompted the premise of this book!

tpixie I‘m just staring this & I love the characters! My 1st Tess Garrison. I watched her on a Bookachino Live YouTube show and since this was not in the middle of a series, I decided to give it a go. I‘m glad I did! 12mo

I‘ve been sick in bed for the last couple of days, so I finished The Spy Coast and Sure I‘ll Join Your Cult. I really liked both the characters and the story in Gerritsen‘s entry into spy fiction. Her characters may be old, retired spies, but they aren‘t decrepit old people who aren‘t of any help. I was surprised by who the villain turned out to be. I look forward to more books in this series.

I‘ve only got 2 hours left to to this book. I don‘t know if I want to go back to Maid or pick something else. It was so dark outside that I seriously thought it would rain on me, but it didn‘t. #audiowalk

It‘s nice to read about people in my age bracket who are active and are lead characters. Here Gerritsen gives us a former spy, Maggie, in her 60s, who has to solve the murder of a maybe CIA agent whose dead body was left in her yard. So far, so good. #aidiowalk

This is a cross between Killers of a Certain Age and The Thursday Murder Club and I am here for all of that. And it‘s the first in a series, so, bring on the next one, please. It seems like former spies are never really former spies. It‘s hard to give up the game and sometimes the game won‘t give you up. Chills, thrills, kills, spills, love, loss, it‘s all here. Read it. You‘ll love it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
