Money | Martin Amis
25 posts | 28 read | 28 to read
John Self, consumer extraordinaire, rolls around New York and London, making deals, spending wildly and doing reckless movie-world business, all the while grabbingeverything he can to sate his massive appetites: alcohol, pornography, a mountain of junk food and more. Ceaselessly inventive and thrillingly savage, this is a tale of life lived without restraint; of money, the terrible things it can do and the disasters it can precipitate.

This was......a challenge. I'd seen a lot of reviews saying this was a work of genius, and it's very clever writing, but quite smug and smartarse with it. The protagonist is possibly the most unlikeable I've ever read, and I spent most of the book trying to figure out whether he - and the novel - was a satire/critique of toxic masculinity and excess consumerism or the worst kind of antihero, and having finished it I'm still not entirely sure.

arlenefinnigan And that completes the @bookriot 2021 #ReadHarder challenge for me, only slightly late. Looking forward to cracking on with the 2022 challenge. Happy New year. 3y

Whenever revisiting a favorite author after some time has gone by, I always wonder if the old magic will be back. In this case it was. What do we want to see done with characters like John Self, and their seemingly endless list of negative qualities (misogynist, abusive, racist, selfish, perpetually drunk, to name a few). Do we want to watch them change their ways or revel in their downfall? This has some great dark comic riffs on this question.

KVanRead Went through a big Martin Amis phase in college and loved this - though it‘s a blur to me now. Just remember laughing a lot. 4y
Liz_M There is something so oddball about Amis' writing and humor that I enjoy. Glad you liked this one! 4y
Billypar @KVanRead I think it would be a great read for a college class. It was very funny, and there's a lot of interesting narrative stuff that many students probably haven't seen before. 4y
Billypar @Liz_M Yeah, it's that endless inventiveness in his writing that does it for me. In his novels your enjoyment doesn't depend on the plot events because 'boring' scenes are just as fun to read as those with more action. 4y

#expressyourself #MOvember
Apparently John Self expresses himself by making a movie about money, while "living money, talking money, and spending money on all the excesses 20th-century culture has to offer: drink, dope, sex, fast food, and love."
On my TBR shelf but from that description...sounds like a terrible novel! On the other hand, Amis hasn't let me down yet, and this is probably his most famous, so I can't not read it ?‍♂️
@Cinfhen

Leftcoastzen I haven‘t read that one either. He‘s excellent though. 5y
BarbaraBB I had a hard time finishing this one. 5y
batsy Read it for a uni class maaaany years ago and thoroughly enjoyed reading about a character I absolutely loathed, so I'm not sure what that says about me 😅 5y

Cinfhen Some books just aren‘t for me....this is probably one of them 😬 5y
Billypar @Leftcoastzen Yeah, he's a favorite of mine- it's been awhile since I read one of his though. 5y
Billypar @BarbaraBB @batsy @Cinfhen I was more attracted to this kind of narrative in college- @batsy like you mentioned, I hated the characters like Self, but I think I hoped they'd have a quiet epiphany by the end or something like that. 5y
Liz_M I loved this book! As an added incentive some of it takes place in the seedy NYC of yesteryear. 😁 5y
Billypar @Liz_M Good to hear! Seedy NYC is so interesting to see in old books and films - hard to believe the change in just a few decades. 5y

Remember The Catcher In The Rye? Well, Money: A Suicide Note is basically the grown up‘s version. If you like your narrators drunk, rich, and horny, then this is the book for you! Amis reportedly based the book on his experiences as a scriptwriter on the film Saturn 3 (remember that classic?). If this is really what the script-writing life is like... I loved all your discussion in my recent post regarding how some novelists include themselves in their books, such as what Amis did here. I‘m giving this a pick, although I know it‘s not for everyone. I actually almost bailed a couple times because John Self is creepy. But others in this story are too, and I couldn‘t resist seeing what would happen eventually. The overall result is a memorable book. #1001Books

I don‘t think I‘ve ever read a novel where the author inserts themselves in the story several times like this. Do any of you know of any other examples?

Photo is of Martin Amis at around the time *Money* was published (1984). He sure looks like an intense personality, and judging from the snippets I read about him while searching for a photo, it seems he was/is, indeed!
#1001Books

LeahBergen He looks like he was a bit of a bad boy. 😆 7y
Billypar I love Martin Amis but for some reason I never read this one. I heard his father didn't approve of the whole inserting himself into the story thing 😸 7y
readordierachel @britt_brooke posted a quote from Chuck Palahniuk's latest just the other day, in which he referenced himself 7y
See All 40 Comments
underthebelljar Stephen King mentions himself and his other books in some of his novels 7y
britt_brooke @ValerieAndBooks Yes! @ReadOrDieRachel 👏🏻 Twice in Palahniuk‘s new book the narrator references Chuck Palahniuk and/or Fight Club. I thought it was pretty weird. (edited) 7y
KimHM The description says the character is called “John Self”? Paul Auster does something similar in (edited) 7y
Faibka Yes, in a novel called “Niebla” (Fog) the main character is unsatisfied with the way his story is turning out so he decides to visit the author, Miguel de Unamuno, and they have a heated exchange until Unamuno gets annoyed and tells him that he‘s going to kill him in the next chapter 😜 (edited) 7y
Texreader How interesting and an interesting dialog you‘ve started. I‘ll have to keep a lookout for this oddity in books. 7y
BarbaraBB I didn‘t like that book much but I remember this and being so surprised. I loved it! 7y
ju.ca.no Hafez talks about himself in a lot of his poems. (Or maybe to himself) when I read it I thought is was kind of odd as it was the first time I came across something like this 7y
andrew61 I think paul auster has a character by that name in New York trilogy? 7y
MariettaSG Kind of different but Italo Calvino's If on 7y
MariettaSG If on a winter's night, a traveller. 7y
MariettaSG Second Person- you are the main character. 7y
BibliOphelia Ugh. I feel like Amis does it because he loves himself so much he can‘t leave himself out. To much “cocky white male literati” to me. Palahniuk doing do irritates me just slightly less, King and Calvino not at all. 🤷‍♀️ 7y
Liz_M Joan Didion doesn't use her name per se, but definitely has the hrrself commenting on writing the story. I think Tim O'Brian also puts himself in the stories of The Things They Carried. Again, not in quite the same way as a character the way Amis does here. And, of course, there is Philip Roth 7y
ValerieAndBooks @LeahBergen yes, it seems like he was a bit of a bad boy😈!! 7y
ValerieAndBooks @Billypar I wonder how much of a competitiveness they had between themselves, what with both being writers! 7y
ValerieAndBooks @ReadOrDieRachel @britt_brooke that would come across as weird to me, too. It‘s not like Palahniuk (haven‘t read him yet) needs to advertise himself! 7y
ValerieAndBooks @KimHM yes the MC is John Self. Martin Amis shows up as himself later in the book. Interesting to know about Paul Auster; I haven‘t read him yet! 7y
ValerieAndBooks @Faibka That actually looks like a good book based on the Litsy synopsis — stacking it — did you like it? 7y
ValerieAndBooks @MariettaSG I want to read that one by Italo Calvino someday! It‘s also kind of a book about a book, isn‘t it? 7y
ValerieAndBooks @Texreader yes, it‘s a great dialogue here— it‘s adding to my TBR too 😊! 7y
ValerieAndBooks @BarbaraBB I‘m wondering if he‘s one of the first authors to use this device — so far all the other authors here I think have done it after he did? 7y
ValerieAndBooks @andrew61 @KimHM I‘ll have to look for that when I read Auster‘s trilogy — he‘s on the #1001Books list, so I‘m bound to pick it up eventually! 7y
ValerieAndBooks @BookishJess do you remember any of the novels where SK mentions himself? Now I vaguely seem to remember Richard Bachman being mentioned by SK 🤔?? Did that actually happen? 7y
ValerieAndBooks @BibliOphelia Did you read Money? Yeah maybe it was done as a vanity — but he puts himself in it as an ordinary writer, not an idolized person — I guess it‘s all in how the authors treat themselves in the novels. 7y
ValerieAndBooks @ju.ca.no ooh, Hafez! I‘ve read him and liked his poetry. I forgot about him referring to himself by name — maybe it was how they referred to themselves in that time/culture instead of “I”? I‘ll have to look at my copy of 7y
britt_brooke @ValerieAndBooks Completely agree! Very narcissistic. 7y
ValerieAndBooks @Liz_M I still have to read all three authors you mention; certainly will keep my eyes open for that 👀! 7y
Billypar @ValerieAndBooks @Liz_M The one Philip Roth I read where he does that is Operation Shylock, and that is my #2 fav Roth behind American Pastoral. Re: Amis Sr- I never read any of his but would be interesting if there was a rivalry. Rushdie, who is friends with Martin, had his Goodreads page outed where he was giving one star ratings to Kingsley Amis novels.... Wonder if he and Martin had a good laugh after that story broke 😁 7y
underthebelljar @ValerieAndBooks It might have been in The Dead Zone... I remember him mentioning one of the characters was reading Cujo lol. I also remember him describing a book to be “like a Stephen King novel” through one of his characters points of view. 7y
KimHM Yes, @Liz_M, O‘Brien is a character in Things, but it isn‘t as meta-fictional as when Auster does it, or, by the sound of this discussion, as annoying? as when Amis does it 😉. @ValerieAndBooks (edited) 7y
BibliOphelia I haven‘t, but to be fair, my comment was more on finding Amis rather insufferable, and wasn‘t an honest comment on his writing. (edited) 7y
ValerieAndBooks @BibliOphelia he does seem like he would not be easy to live with 😂! 7y
BibliOphelia Yep. 😂 7y
ValerieAndBooks @Billypar wow, I can see Rushdie joining GR to keep tabs on what people say about his books, then getting into mischief there 😂! 7y
ValerieAndBooks @BookishJess I will have to pay closer attention when I get around to reading the early King novels again! Or any of the many still to be TBR. 7y
MariettaSG @ValerieAndBooks Calvino: yes it is a book about a book and it is written as though you are the protagonist. 😐 6y
ValerieAndBooks @MariettaSG 🤔 hmm, interesting!! 6y

A beautiful day today after a week of daily rain!! This is my current #1001Books read. I almost bailed a couple times, the MC is unlikeable, but think now I‘ll be able to stick with this to the end. We‘ll see!

MicheleinPhilly I was soaking up as much Vitamin D as I could today! 7y
ValerieAndBooks @TheFunkyBookworm it is a cool cover (Penguin Ink) 😍!! 7y
ValerieAndBooks @Cathythoughts the main character is driving me crazy!! But the writing is keeping me from bailing just yet!! 7y
ValerieAndBooks @BarbaraBB good to know— so if I eventually decide to bail, I won‘t feel bad😉. John Self is such a 🤬!! But the writing is keeping me from giving up just yet. 7y
ValerieAndBooks @MicheleinPhilly same here!! But rethinking our outdoor time after I had to remove a tick from son — we weren‘t even in the grass or anything 😱! Off Deep Woods from now on I guess!! 7y
Liz_M I think part of the point is that the mc is a jerk. There is a slyness in the storytelling that I quite enjoyed. 7y
batsy John Self is the worst. But despite myself, I was unable to put it down. 7y
MicheleinPhilly Ugh! My friend has had to pull 3 off of her dog so far this year. Despite the fact that he takes flea and tick meds. It‘s supposed to be bad this year. 7y
ValerieAndBooks @Liz_M I‘m getting into it more now even though he‘s such a jerk. I‘m at the point where he‘s lying and saying his name is Martin and he‘s a writer (I.e. this book‘s author)...clever!! 7y
ValerieAndBooks @batsy he‘s definitely kind of a train wreck 😆!! 7y
ValerieAndBooks @MicheleinPhilly eek! Be sure to check Pickles every time she comes in from the park!! 7y
