Adjustment Day
Adjustment Day | Chuck Palahniuk
People pass the word only to those they trust most: Adjustment Day is coming. They've been reading a mysterious book and memorizing its directives. They are ready for the reckoning. Adjustment Day, the author's first novel in four years, is an ingeniously comic work in which Chuck Palahniuk does what he does best: skewer the absurdities in our society. Smug, geriatric politicians bring the nation to the brink of a third world war in an effort to control the burgeoning population of young males; working-class men dream of burying the elites; and professors propound theories that offer students only the bleakest future. Into this dyspeptic time a blue-black book is launched carrying such wisdom as: Imagine there's no God. There is no Heaven or Hell. There is only your son and his son and his son and the world you leave for them. The weak want you to forgo your destiny just as they've shirked theirs. A smile is your best bulletproof vest. When Adjustment Day arrives, it fearlessly makes real the logical conclusion of every separatist fantasy, alternative fact, and conspiracy theory lurking in the American psyche.

Definitely one of the most WTF books I‘ve ever read (and I‘m a huge Palahniuk fan saying that!)

I‘ve been on a good-book reading streak 🙌🏾 . This book was awesome; scary close to our current US political climate. The book raised questions on current US economical and political policies. I don‘t know what to compare Adjustment Day to, but I viewed it as a story about a post-apocalyptic United States. Throw in extremely controversial issues, and sci-fi and you have Adjustment Day. I wanted to add I loved the ending, many did not.

Reggie Have you read any of his others? I loved Choked, Haunted, and In is I Le Monsters by him. I haven‘t read this one, though. 4y
NikkiM5 @Reggie so this is my first book by him. I am excited to read more, I will add those to my TBR 4y

This is my second time reading this, and oh boy, it‘s scary in its predictions.

So the angry male youth need an outlet, form a sort of cult around a book of ‘wisdom‘, then use cancel culture and fake news to wipe out the opposition - politicians and the well educated. Then segregate the US into three parts: Gaysia, Caucasia, and Blacktopia. It only gets worse from there.

Everything is deeply satirical/dark/vulgar, as only Palahniuk can deliver.

NikkiM5 So excited for this 4y

Had this book for a couple years and haven‘t touched it. Figured now is as good as a time as any to dive in, especially given the state of the US right now. Chuck Palahniuk is easily one of my favorite authors. Here we go...

This is Chuck‘s satirical vision of the rise of fascism in the US. Similar to Gilead or the New Founding Fathers, our government is wiped out in a ‘purge‘ like fashion on Adjustment Day. Our country is then separated into factions depending on race or sexual preference. Many conform just to survive, others try to flee. Equal parts frightening and comic, this is definitely a result of the authors thoughts on our current political climate.

I‘m a huge fan of Chuck and all of his work but this one was tough. I admire his ability to critically view his own work and use satire to unite his own writing with a unique and poignant form of dystopia. For a shorter book, this was long. If you don‘t love this author, I would say probably don‘t try this one.

Palahniuk is always wry and sarcastic and dark, and this book does not disappoint on those points. It got a little meta for me (a character talks about Fight Club and it‘s author). A violent commentary on society.

A complicated book in terms of what it aspires to say, what it actually says, and how it chooses to say it. While giving benefit of doubt to the author, my estimation is thus: like Fight Club before it, those in need of it's message are most likely to misread it, and those most likely to understand it may not enjoy reading it all the same. What success the book achieves is largly reliant on Pal.'s gift for compelling prose.

It took me too long to get through this novel. There are far too many characters--mostly flat cliches. No one to really grab on to or cheer for. Don't get me wrong; I have read most of Palahniuk's work and I knew what to expect. If you don't like satire or have never read him, don't start here. This novel is heavy in theory, criticism, and poking fun at Americans.

“If you can slash a tire, you can harvest an ear.”

On a large scale the premise is so intriguing, but in execution, it‘s a disorganized mess. With no distinct chapters, and a stupid number of characters (none of whom I cared lived, died, lost an ear, whatever), it was easy to get storylines confused. Talbott‘s blue-black book of aphorisms is the only thing that kept me going. Glad it‘s over.

REPollock I think Pahlahniuk‘s style is really dated. He‘s like a bombastic shock-jock who was once considered badass but has aged into a sad caricature. 7y
britt_brooke @REPollock Completely agree. Now, it feels like he‘s just trying way too hard. 7y
