The Umbrella Man and Other Stories
The Umbrella Man and Other Stories | Roald Dahl
Is it really possible to invent a machine that does the job of a writer? What is it about the landlady's house that makes it so hard for her guests to leave? Does Sir Basil Turton value most his wife or one of his priceless sculptures? These compelling tales are a perfect introduction to the adult writing of a storytelling genius.

It‘s been very busy this month, but Dahl‘s short stories are perfect for “dip in & out” reading! They‘re not difficult, and he‘s a genius at surprise endings. Sometimes his views towards women are not enlightened, though. I‘ll seek out more of his adult fiction.

I‘ve enjoyed #authoramonth this year! The only author I didn‘t finish anything of was VE Schwab (sorry) but enjoyed the experience of reading the rest. Thanks @Soubhiville for hosting.

erzascarletbookgasm The Dahl book I‘m reading has the short story The Great Automatic Grammatizator too! 4y
Soubhiville I‘m glad you‘ve enjoyed it! You read a lot for it! I hope you‘ll join us next year too. 4y

ValerieAndBooks @erzascarletbookgasm that short story in particular made me realize we are not that far off with that technology today, what with predictive text and all 😂 4y
ValerieAndBooks @Soubhiville I definitely plan to be part of the fun next year 😊. Thanks for it all! 4y

This collection of short stories is a good sampler of Dahl‘s writing, if you haven‘t read his adult stories. Interestingly dark, some end with unexpected twists, some sinister plots. The Umbrella Man touches on the gullible human nature, which involves a man with a brolly in London.

jen_the_scribe Roald Dahl's children's books were my favorite as a kid, didn't even know he wrote for adults too! 5y
Cinfhen Forgot all about #LilithJuly 😜I‘m engrossed with #Top6Reads 😂😂😂 5y
Jari-chan I didn't know about his adult books either! 😱 5y
KarenUK I love how dark and twisty his writing was.... even his kids books always have an edge... 5y

thebluestocking I love his stuff so much! I did an undergrad thesis on his adult short stories. But I love his children‘s stuff the most. 5y
Jee_HookedOnBookz @thebluestocking wowww a thesis on his adult short stories?? That must've been very interesting!! Did you have to study all his stories? And yes to his children's books... If only I could pick his brain! 5y

Here‘s what I‘m considering for #LMPBC. Let me know what you think (especially if you‘ve read and/or definitely don‘t want to read any of them). I‘m having some trouble deciding.

Laughterhp I‘ve read the AJ Fikry and I just bought the Magician‘s Lie! I‘m not a huge fan of short stories, but it‘s Roald Dahl, so I feel like they‘d be good. The other 2 sound really good! 6y
Ingerella I've not read any so again, I'm up for anything. They are all totally different stories. 6y
knittedgnome I'm currently reading Mudbound and really enjoying it so far. 6y
LauraJ I haven‘t read any of these, so I‘m up for any. I‘ll get my choices up soon. 6y
BarbaraBB Mudbound has been on my tbr for ever, I would read that one! 6y

I've had this collection of stories from Ronald Dahl since childhood, but I'm not sure if I've ever read it entirely. I guess I'll have to change that. ☔️ #TBR #EmojiNov
