The Overstory: A Novel | Richard Powers
post image
Pickpick

I can‘t yet do a short “favorites” list of books of 2024, but I sure can do a favorites of each month so far!

Here‘s January 2024‘s five-star, shove-into-your-hands, gorgeously-written chunkster of a novel that reached right through to my tree-hugging heart and never let go.

Nature themed books were my sweet spot this year and I have this gem to thank for kicking it all off. 🌳

Soubhiville Yes! I love this book! It was my favorite of last year. 🌳💚 1d

NovelGirl82 How was Two Can Keep a Secret? I have it on my kindle from the library, but it‘s going to expire soon. Trying to decide if I need to rush and get to it! 6y
CoffeeK8 @NovelGirl82 I really liked it, if you read her other book and liked it, I thought this one was even better! 6y
NovelGirl82 I really enjoyed the first one, so I‘ll definitely get on this one! Thanks! 6y

41 TOTAL! I've been looking for new ways to track & present info, so here is an experiment. I've got reading method (mostly print), content format (mostly graphic due to #letsgetgraphicweeklongreadathon), source (mostly library), etc. I checked 6 books off my #mountTBR shelf, gave an equal amount of 3/4/5 star ratings & read 51% books written by women. Gotta work on that #POCauthor stat-32% isn't good enough. See comments for recommendations! ⬇️

Natasha.C.Barnes Absolute favorites of Jan: The Idiot, Private Citizens, Exit West, White Tears. 7y
Natasha.C.Barnes Best Of Graphic marathon reads: Here, SuperMutant Magic Academy, The Gigantic Beard That Was Evil, This One Summer, any Giant Days, anything Lucy Knisley. 7y

DrexEdit Fabulous! Love the pie charts! 😊👍 7y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Wow!!! Love it!!! 💛💙💛💙 7y
readingwinds This is a fantastic way to visually breakdown your reading month. My pies would be a bit wonky as I did not read as much and all my books came from the library, but I might try this out. 7y
hes7 Yay! 🎉 7y
Natasha.C.Barnes @readingwinds Well you certainly don't have to do them all, there are so many different trackable things. I'd never even think to track where the book came from but I'm trying to get through my #mountTBR so I will want to keep tracking how many were owned (acquired 2017 or before) and how many were new (acquired in 2018) 7y
LiteraryinPA This is so cool! I‘m thinking of starting my own #bujo for 2018. I could start with my 2018 stats. Do you have any suggestions for how to get started? Is there a kind of journal most people use? Thanks! 7y
Natasha.C.Barnes @LiteraryinLititz I just started last September, I can tell you what I use. I have a notebook from Rhodia (the webnotebook I think) that looks like a moleskin but the paper is better, but it's also STUPID expensive. I have some great cheapo plastic stencils from Amazon that work great (sold by a million ppl, they're literally the same). I use color pens from Le Pen and Staedtler and Tombow colored markers (cont) 7y
Natasha.C.Barnes @LiteraryinLititz definitely get the Tombow if you can bc so many markets bleed through but these you can hardly see at all from the other side. And washi tape! Washi tape is the best. 7y
DivaDiane I love the graphs! I just started a Bujo in December, but it‘s REALLY basic. No pretty colors or Washi tape! 7y

“Because you‘re like a story that hasn‘t happened yet. Because I want to see what you will do. I want to be part of the unfolding of the tale.” - Locke

Not a favorite character, but a new favorite quote! I tried to pick a #BestOfJanuary but I just couldn‘t! Just way too many great reads to choose from this month!

My FAVORITE thing this month was welcoming my friends to Litsy!

What was your #FaveBookishThing this month? 📚💕

britt_brooke Wow, great month! 👏🏻 My favorite bookish thing this month was handing out four 5-Star ratings (out of 18 total read). I‘m stingy with stars so that‘s a big deal! 😁 (edited) 7y
the.bookish.valkyrie @britt_brooke Wow! That‘s awesome! Which books got the 5s? 7y
See All 11 Comments
britt_brooke @ValkyrieAndHerBooks Kavalier & Clay, Saga Vol 8, A River Runs Through It, and True Grit 7y
RebL I‘m going to meet Holly Black and Sandhya Menon in March. Can‘t wait! 7y
the.bookish.valkyrie @britt_brooke Saga has been on my radar for a while but I haven‘t been able to read it yet 😅 I‘ll need to checkout the other 3! @RebL Ooo! I should check to see if they‘re going to be anywhere near me! I‘m going to see Patricia Briggs and Anne Bishop in March! Seems like it‘s gonna be a big book tour month! (edited) 7y
RebL I‘m excited about both of them for different reasons. I listened to Holly Black on a podcast where the interviewer was much of the time talking about herself. Black seemed like a good listener and had great advice. I was really impressed. 7y
britt_brooke @ValkyrieAndHerBooks Saga is sooo good. 💚 7y
MamaGina My favorite thing was that my grown son sent me a Goodreads friend request. I've been subtly trying to encourage him to get back into reading - we spent a couple hours at Half Price Books last time I visited him and we've had some great bookish discussions on the phone recently too. He's my only friend on Goodreads, I only use it to keep track of books read, Litsy is my place for bookish friendships, but I definitely had to friend Him!!! Lol 🤓 7y
flip58 Loved The Cruel Prince. I read It and then listen to the audible version. It was my favorite book. January was a good month. I read 22 books. 7y
the.bookish.valkyrie @MamaGina I‘m so glad to hear that your son getting back into reading! That‘s awesome! @flip58 wow! 22 books is great! And I agree! Cruel Prince is fantastic! 7y

#JanuaryWrapUp

I read 9 books in January, most of them good, but not one can compare to this one, my first 5 star read of the year. Eleanor Catton rocks 😀💪!

#BestOfJanuary

Tamra I‘m going to have to dig this one out! It‘s good to see so Littens many have liked it - makes it less daunting. 7y
BarbaraBB @Tamra Do! It is great from page 1 to 800. Just keep some notes of the 12 main characters in the first chapter! 7y
Cathythoughts I‘m a bit afraid of this one. But one can but try .... 7y

My January Reads -plus 4 books that were either loans or library and have been returned. Not a bad start, considering. Favorites were Home Front & Prayers for Sale. Phoebe was hilarious, thanks to @NerdyRev for that one (I'm sorry it took so long for me to read it!). #bestofjanuary

I can't remember the last time I read so many books in a month. #ReadJanuary

My #BestofJanuary is a tie between You and The Book of You. Both are well written and deal with stalking. I also enjoyed The Conjoined. The Woman in Cabin 10 & The Vanishing Year were my least favourite.

January was rather light on novels and even lighter on ones I really enjoyed. But, I did read some good stuff and I have high hopes for February.

RealLifeReading Loved Roller Girl! 8y
DGRachel @RealLifeReading Me, too! It was my only 5-star read and I just adored it! 8y

I spent most of January continuing the Anne of Green Gables series, but this one is my #bestofjanuary standalone! Didn't keep up with the prompts very well. Hopefully you'll see more of them from me this month! #readjanuary
