Having read Doyle‘s original recently, this feminist take on Sherlock is a delight. The social conditions necessitating the ruse are not.

I really enjoyed this one and loved the characters. The author really brought the time period to life and I loved how plucky she was. A really fun read! @stillcurious

I really enjoyed this one with the #pemberlittens this month.
I've never read any Sherlock Holmes but have seen plenty of adaptations and I liked this gender swapped retelling. The set up was a bit slow, but once all the characters were introduced the mystery picked up. I'm looking forward to continuing this series in the future

I liked the idea of this story, should I say a retelling? A female Sherlock Holmes. I didn‘t know what to expect of this book before I read it. But the was in love with the cover😍it ends that I liked the mystery, the characters the plot. That person was terrible, can‘t say without spoiler the book🤐What I say is I have already book #2👌

Read with #PemberLittens #JaneAdjacent group. I started this in audiobook which was charming but a tad hard for me to follow unless I was fully concentrating. When my library e-book hold came in, I switched to it & I think I prefer it that way. Although a bit disjointed at times, I quite enjoyed this 1st book & will continue the series as I loved the characters & want to see where the story goes next.

#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent Ch.22: looks like our suspicions were correct- Moriarty has been identified. How interesting! And the revelation about Mrs Watson and Ashbourne‘s friendship- that, I didn‘t see coming. A good way to end the book and start the series. I‘m definitely hooked on these characters. Overall I found some parts were a bit confusing but I was definitely intrigued, I appreciated the historic setting and I couldn‘t stop reading!

LiseWorks I enjoyed this, and yes it was confusing at some parts, but it came together in the end . Can't wait for our next read. Thanks for hosting. 3mo
CatLass007 It‘s been in my Audible library for some time. I‘m glad to finally have an “excuse” to read it. It‘s been free on Audible for a while and so is the second one in the series, A Conspiracy in Belgravia. I‘ve enjoyed reading with all of you. Is this the final chapter, @StayCurious? I don‘t want to spoil anything by asking a question about what people think of a certain conversation. 3mo
IndoorDame Thanks for hosting! This was a fun one! (I was also occasionally confused, but I assumed it was cause I had to switch over to audio and couldn‘t easily flip back to check details and character names 🤷🏻‍♀️) 3mo
willaful I'm pleased to finally know what the idea behind the series is. Everything kinda smushed together to become the Holmes the world knows.

CatLass007 @StayCurious Thank you. I had the impression that Treadles was very unsettled by his conversation with his wife and her desire to run her father‘s business but she wasn‘t allowed to do anything at all by her brother. He seemed a little less secure about his relationship with his wife after their conversation. And maybe he is a little afraid that Charlotte, whether his wife ever meets her or not, is going to be a “bad” influence on his wife. 3mo

I was not sure what to think of this at first - the writing style, the construct of the narrative is very different than other mysteries. And yet, as the pieces came together, I was hooked. It‘s a really interesting puzzle that Thomas writes in homage of Sherlock Holmes. It also sets up the series. I‘m looking forward to reading more! #PemberLittens #JaneAdjacent

#JaneAdjacent This was a fun read! On the low end of a pick for me because there were too many chapters where I wasn‘t that interested and kept wishing we‘d hurry back to the main story. But I adored most of the characters, and I found the nods to the original Sherlock story charming. @StayCurious

#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent Ch.21: So Mr.Sackville had dark secrets, and his death really was connected to the two society ladies. Everything has been laid bare and will soon be made public. Looks like Charlotte will no longer be the main source of gossip in upper London society. I feel bad for Lord Sheridan - now he‘ll have to be alone with what happened within his family.

CatLass007 I love the cat picture! I have enjoyed this buddy read. 3mo
IndoorDame I have mixed feelings about this chapter. (Besides the obvious) Why do Charlotte and Treadles not think blackmailing people to commit suicide is a form of murder that should be punished? 3mo
See All 12 Comments
willaful I feel bad about Treadles. I hope his injured feelings about his wife aren't going to cause trouble between them. 3mo
willaful Also, kind of gross that two of my buddy reads this month were about incestuous pedophiles! 🤢 3mo
willaful @IndoorDame It's a classic upper-class English approach... another form of giving the person a pistol and leaving them to “do the right thing.“ I don't feel too torn up about it, honestly.

If Mrs Marbleton is indeed going to be Moriarty, I think she'll be a more interesting and sympathetic one. Not that I know a lot about the original character.
3mo
StayCurious @willaful I know - a strange coincidence I wasn‘t expecting 3mo
vonnie862 Yeah, I was not expecting this twist. 3mo
julieclair I have to admit I was a bit surprised at this revelation. It seemed jarring in a book that was a bit lighthearted in tone. 3mo
mcctrish I wasn‘t expecting the relevation at all 🤯 and Treadles is going to have to earn his way back into my good graces. He‘s now met Charlotte and realizes she is an unusual woman, maybe he should give his head a shake 3mo
LiseWorks I was not expecting the pedophile angle at all. 3mo
willaful @mctrish I think it'll come out in the wash eventually but I fear Treadles may be quite a jerk until he wises up. :-( 3mo

#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent Ch.20: while things are still clear as mud, at least we finally see a connection between the Marbletons and Mr.Sackville‘s death. Now we know why the author branched off. I still don‘t know the full extent of what happened but I‘m definitely intrigued. Now, if Treadles has figured out that Charlotte is Sherlock, will he still work with her?

LiseWorks I have a feeling that Treadles has an idea that maybe she is Sherlock. The conversations he has with his wife about her makes me think he figured it out. 3mo
CatLass007 I enjoy the exchanges between Treadles and his wife. The author has created several interesting characters who I‘ve enjoyed getting to know. 3mo

#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent Ch.19: more questions! I‘m so eager to see where this will lead. First, with who the Marbletons are - are they journalists seeking a story, or a band of con artists - or have we met Moriarty? What is their interest with Charlotte Holmes? And second, where on earth did Lady Shrewsbury go that night? Also, did I read it right that Ash sometimes works as a spy for his brother?

mcctrish I liked Lord Ingram hanging out with Charlotte ( he actually felt like a different person in this chapter) and Mrs Watson getting a chance to question Mr Shrewsbury. I do not understand Ingram‘s misgivings of Mrs Watson but hopefully he‘s off his let‘s send Charlotte to the Americas to run a boarding school train 3mo

#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent I‘m finding myself a bit more interested in the investigative work by Treadles than in the sudden side plot with Charlotte and Mrs.Marbleton. Unless Marbleton has something to do with the man following Charlotte. If she doesn‘t end up having anything to do with our main case then I will feel as though the author veered a bit off course. ⬇️

CatLass007 Treadles is an excellent detective on his own but with the assistance of Charlotte he becomes a superior one. 3mo

#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent Ch.15: so someone was cruelly and slowly poisoning Sackville but they grew impatient and went for a faster acting poison. Poor guy! And upon closer inspection, not is all what it seems in the household who served him. I think Becky Birtles is definitely a key element here. I think Meek‘s past is just a sad coincidence.

willaful My first thought was that there were two poisoners, but I guess this theory is more likely. 3mo

IndoorDame @willaful I had the same thought. But I‘m not sure that actually makes sense. And I definitely don‘t have 2 separate really solid suspects 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3mo
IndoorDame I‘m also finding Mrs. Meeks super believable. I don‘t think she was involved. But I think the housekeeper is definitely lying. I just haven‘t decided if it‘s about small stuff like still having the photo because she wants to protect someone‘s reputation, or about something more significant… 3mo
LiseWorks Something is afoot with the Whiskey decanter. Where did it go? Why was Mrs Cornish looking for it? 3mo

#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent So sorry I missed posting yesterday! Ch.13: what a complicated history Charlotte and Ash have! They clearly love each other but can‘t be together. And their feelings are so complex. So sad. But an enlightening chapter for sure. Ch.14: Oh, we finally get the idea for Charlotte - as Sherlock - to offer up her services to the public. ⬇️

StayCurious What a champion she has in Mrs.Watson who seems excited about the prospect. This would allow Charlotte to support herself, and give Mrs.Watson purpose. As for the case they are working on now with Treadles, the plot thickens…I‘m intrigued to know what exactly is going on! 3mo
willaful It tickles me that Mrs. Watson is also Mrs. Hudson. And how nice for the Watson to be a person with wisdom and experience, rather than the bumbling dolt that so often shows up in Holmes-inspired media. 3mo
See All 13 Comments
StayCurious @willaful I love that she can use her experience as an actress to help Charlotte 3mo
IndoorDame It seems like Charlotte and Mrs. Watson are really starting a strong partnership of equals which makes me so happy! 3mo
willaful @StayCurious @IndoorDame Yes, she has the qualities that Charlotte sorely lacks, and Charlotte brings adventure into her life, so they're a great match. 3mo
LiseWorks I love the way they have it set up with the Sherlock is in the room next door bit. I didn't like that Lord Ingram wants Charlotte not to trust Mrs Watson. He even suggested she go to America and start over. 3mo
willaful @LiseWorks I think he's in a bit of a tough spot. He probably feels like he failed Charlotte and that makes him sensitive about further misfortune for her. (Possibly he also would like her not to be around tempting him...) 3mo
Roary47 This chapter (14) brought me back to interested. 😍 3mo

#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent Ch.12: Again, Charlotte shows off her ”powers” and poor Treadles must have been quite embarrassed. No one talked about money back then - it was seen as crass. But she had a point to prove I suppose. Still, Treadles and Alice are #CoupleGoals. The plot thickens as Holmes makes mention of tampering with the supplies of strychnine. But how easily could that have been done? What kind of diabolical murderer is behind this?

CatLass007 I love that picture. It‘s beautiful. 3mo

#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent Ch. 9: I think Treadles is a solid cop with good instincts. He asks the right questions. His association with Holmes would only speed things up I think, because he‘s not stupid and does his due diligence. I can‘t believe there was a time when rich and titled people could categorically refuse to work with the police- like the family of the ladies who were killed. ⬇️

Well, I made small progress on my #JoyousJanuary goals. I have caught up on #Pemberlittens Buddy Read. I did read some more of Return of the King and The Adventures of Tom Bombaldi for #FellowshipofTolkien The night is still young!

#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent Ch.7: we finally see Charlotte use her Sherlockian brain when she reveals Mrs Wallace‘s secret. Still, it didn‘t help her situation much despite getting her money back. She has no place to live and what if Mrs Wallace tells about her past to other boarding houses in the area? Charlotte is in a very precarious position. Will she need to ask for help? From Ashbury perhaps?

CatLass007 You had me with the cat. 🐈‍⬛ 3mo
LiseWorks The fact that she was robbed makes her in even more dire situation. Should she go back home? Or use her two weeks of money to try to find a position cooking? 3mo

IndoorDame I‘m ready to get past the setup and be in the heart of this story 3mo
willaful @IndoorDame seconded!

In a way it's kind of cool to see an imperfect Sherlock who screws up, but in another way I'm really scared for her and also want to shake her.
3mo
StayCurious @IndoorDame that might be in the sequel lol - still I am enjoying this one. Makes me want to watch Ms.scarlet and the duke and Murdoch Mysteries 3mo
IndoorDame @StayCurious Oooh, I haven‘t seen those yet and I‘ve been looking for a new show to binge! 3mo
StayCurious @IndoorDame ms scarlet is about a female detective in Victorian England and Murdoch is a detective in Toronto 3mo
IndoorDame @StayCurious fun! I think I‘ll check out Ms. Scarlet first 3mo
CrowCAH I read this book last year; very entertaining! I liked it 👍🏻 3mo
Roary47 Even more excited about this after this chapter. 🤣💛 3mo
peanutnine @IndoorDame I had the same thought. I'm enjoying the characters but I'm ready for the main mystery to take off! Although since it's the first in a series I get that a lot needs to be explained 3mo
SarahBookInterrupted Love this! I skipped ahead because it‘s getting good. So I don‘t want to give anything away. But it‘s starting to get really good. 3mo
vonnie862 Glad Charlotte got her money back but will she do now? And I agree with @IndoorDame when is the plot starting? 3mo
julieclair The idea of being kicked out is petrifying. I hope she doesn‘t have to go home, but she may have no other choice. 3mo
mcctrish One of the reasons I wanted to read this is because I have watched Miss Scarlet and the Duke. Charlotte needs a break in her favour 🙏🏻 3mo

#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent Ch. 6: I am interested to learn more about Ash and Charlotte‘s relationship. Unrequited love? Perhaps more on his part? How intriguing. In any case, he‘s still interested in helping Holmes despite everything that has happened.

willaful Yes, my interest is finally piqued. ;-) It sounds like Charlotte wanted him to do the deed but Ash is married with children and won't be a cad. So was she partially punishing him by choosing S?

I was amused by this line: “If a diversion had been all that was required, Holmes would have accomplished it without provoking a public uproar.“ He definitely has a higher opinion of her abilities than I do, so far!
3mo
vonnie862 The proposal of Charlotte being taken care of if she became a mistress had me chuckling. 3mo
Scochrane26 I love reading all the comments during your intro to this series. I hope you all love this as much as I do. The first book is somewhat slower-paced. 3mo
KristiAhlers Oh Charlotte! I feel she would be a lot of fun to actually sit down with. I'm truly enjoying this one 3mo

#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent Ch.5: with no work prospects and her finances fast depleting, Charlotte is worried, but hiding it well. Then she overhears the gossip to do with her scandal: not only is Lady Shrewsbury dead, but she had an argument with Livia shortly before she died. Charlotte soon realizes that she may need to use her talents at deduction - not only to help herself, but to save her sister.

KristiAhlers This book just keeps getting better and better. 3mo
vonnie862 I love how Lydia writes to her yelling. 3mo
julieclair I love how close Charlotte and Livia are, and how they each try to help the other. (edited) 3mo
Roary47 I liked Lydia‘s letter. With all the “p‘s” and “s‘s”while Charlotte might not have it all together. I hope she can devise a plan to help her with getting work, an DD helping her sister. 3mo

#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent Ch.4: her reputation in tatters, Charlotte decides to run away and make her way in the harsh world of London. I wonder at her confidence. Does she know how cruel the city can be to unsuspecting females? Livia is - and rightfully so- terrified for her sister. Is Charlotte too smart for her own good or does she have a plan?

CatLass007 I have to admit that in the first few chapters she comes off as not being very bright. Which would mean she is no Sherlock. I just think she‘s led a sheltered life and is very naive. 3mo
IndoorDame I can‘t figure her out. Is she actually extremely smart or extremely stupid? The original Sherlock is also out of step with society, but it‘s less noticeable in a man, and Sherlock at least seems better at walking in the world where our gal is almost pretending it doesn‘t exist. 3mo

StayCurious @CatLass007 @IndoorDame I‘m picking up Sheldon vibes from The Big Bang Theory - clueless in some ways but brilliant in others (edited) 3mo
CatLass007 @IndoorDame @StayCurious Sheldon is definitely naive. 3mo
IndoorDame @CatLass007 @StayCurious definitely an apt comparison! 3mo
LiseWorks I agree with the sheltered life. It is ashamed that a woman in this time has to belong to a man in order to survive. I also think she is in for a rude awakening. 3mo
vonnie862 Her plan to simply find her own way in a world where it is not too nice for women seems to good to be true. I have a feeling that she's going to have a rude awakening. 3mo
peanutnine Yeah hard to tell if she's just very naive or has more of a plan than she's letting on. I'm curious what Livia is going to do, hopefully something more to help her sister 3mo
willaful I'm pretty sure both Charlotte and her sister (Belinda?) are intended to be autistic -- which would jibe with a hoghly intelligent person not always having the most common sense. Her plans seem not very Sherlockian so far. (She was aware of STDs but not worried about getting one?) I'm vaguely wondering if “Sherlock“ is a team of both sisters? No, that doesn't make sense chronologically. (edited) 3mo
SarahBookInterrupted I‘m very worried for Charlotte, but hoping this is an optimistic story that somehow works out for her. 🤞 3mo
Roary47 I‘m with @SarahBookInterrupted in it working out for her. She may be overly cocky, but I‘m hoping she is smarter than she seems. I like the Sheldon Cooper reference. I can definitely see that. 3mo

#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent Ch.2: we meet the Holmes family and most importantly, Charlotte. She is definitely more than she seems. A lot happens in this chapter, and we learn a bit about who Charlotte is and we learn why Charlotte jumped into bed with that buffoon. She was certainly misguided though- I‘m not sure she fully thought her plan through. ⬇️

StayCurious Back then, a scandal like this would not disappear. It would remain with Charlotte and her family for years and years. I wonder what can be done now? 3mo
IndoorDame Seems like a risky plan for a girl as smart as she‘s supposed to be. It might work, but it could just as easily backfire and force her into a way less desirable marriage to just try and grab back some respectability for the family 3mo

CatLass007 I fail to understand Charlotte‘s logic in making this decision. It almost caused me to stop listening to the audiobook then and there. 3mo
Librarybelle This is certainly an interesting setup for the book/series. I‘m intrigued! 3mo
LiseWorks Well when she formulated the plan I don't think Roger's mother was supposed to catch them. It kind of backfired as He couldn't keep his mouth shut. Charlotte just wanted to be on her own and her father didn't donwhat he said. I'm wandering if it because they are broke. 3mo
AnnR I'm with @CatLass007 on this one. 3mo
CatLass007 @AnnR Well, I already have finished the book, but I was sorely tempted to bail. 3mo
vonnie862 Oh the scandal! Lol Yeah, I don't think Charlotte thought out her plan well because this affects her sister as well. 3mo
peanutnine Yeah even without getting caught I'm not sure what Charlotte hoped to accomplish here. I'm also very curious about her relationship with the other men from the first chapter now 3mo
SarahBookInterrupted Wow, what a start. I wonder where all this is going to lead. 3mo
Roary47 @IndoorDame , @peanutnine and @vonnie862 That was exactly what I thought too. She is supposed to be smart. Why is she doing this and she must not have thought this all the way through. @Librarybelle I‘m interested in how it plays out as well. 3mo
mcctrish Roger is absolute trash and Charlotte‘s dad isn‘t much better. I was rage reading at this point. I have to teach today so hoping I can get caught up after school some more 3mo

#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent Prologue and Ch.1: well…shocking events have taken place! We are thrown right into a scandal - the likes of which would rock Victorian London society and surely destroy lives. We meet an array of characters - but I‘m not sure yet how each will fit into this story. Obviously more is happening than we are led to believe. Read on!

IndoorDame Feeling a bit at sea, but really liking our cast of characters so far 😄 3mo

Librarybelle I actually thought I inadvertently started a Sherlock Holmes story! 😂 Then, the scandal! Oh my…this may very well be juicy! 3mo
LiseWorks Am I ever glad I'm not the only one who is confused a tad. Ha! But still the scandal! Especially with the warning. "Don't. And if you must, not with Roger Shrewsbury." It's as if Lord Ingram knows? Is he ourwatson? 3mo
LiseWorks Our Watson 3mo
willaful I'm nervous. A man who obviously gets around would not be my first choice for this enterprise, considering the time period. 😂 3mo

#Pemberlittens thanks for a great voter turnout for our next #JaneAdjacent read! Funnily enough this will be more Sherlock-Adjacent - which I think will be fun. There are a ton of books that pay homage to literary characters. I‘ve decided to go back to 1 ch. a day with this b/c some of the chapters are a bit lengthy. We‘ll be starting Jan 8. Let me know if you want to be tagged in my daily posts!

CatLass007 The first three books in the Lady Sherlock series are free on Audible. There are about as many variations on Sherlock Holmes as there are on Jane Austen. I think a #SherlockHolmes #HolmesAdjacent #BuddyRead would be awesome! I‘m not volunteering to host one because I have no idea how it would work. StayCurious @CatLass007 I do! I keep it pretty simple - I‘ve tried Canva but find it complicated 4mo
CatLass007 Hmmm. I guess that sometimes the old adage is true. You can‘t teach an old dog a new trick. I‘m finding it difficult to pick up new ways of doing things or even doing things that I once would have had no problem with. My neurologist (who I see because of migraines) says there‘s nothing wrong with my memory. It is an attention issue. Short term memory is very limited so your brain has to make a decision about what to remember and what to forget. 4mo

What a clever read…I enjoyed this immensely, all the way through. Great twist on the original Sherlock theme with plenty of differences to enjoy. All the witty attitude and intelligence you‘d expect to see, with great characters to fall in love with. I finished this book in a couple days and tore through the next 2 of the series within a week. Excellent, highly recommend.

Finished this #Audiobook today.

After a slow buildup, we finally got on the case! Interesting how Charlotte, aka Sherlock Holmes, assisted with the case from afar, deducing from what she was told and case files.

All in all, the author added all the Holmes items into her narrative, including all key player‘s names.
