1843 is “the last year of the world” — according to Elias Fitcher, a charismatic preacher in upstate NY. Determined to spend Eternity as a married man, he sets his eye on the three young daughters of one of his devout followers.
This reimagining of the Bluebeard tale was so good. It‘s a very dark story that I would highly recommend to dark fantasy lovers.

This #FairytaleRetelling of #Bluebeard makes for a fun and fast listen! I really love Kingfisher‘s books and this YA story shares some of the dark imagery of her books for adults— as well as some of the humor. Rhea, a miller‘s daughter, finds herself in the impossible position of being forced to marry a mysterious nobleman. When she travels to his home, with the unexpected aid of a hedgehog, she soon discovers that there are darker secrets afoot!

This was a very quick read. Could hardly put it down. It was really creepy in places, I thought I might not like it but I do like it so much!

Okay.

It was supposed to be an easy #standalone #fantasy #onedayread; instead, it turned into another loosely knit (?) #series I have to put on my radar. A Bluebeard #retelling of the Middle East variety, with delicious worldbuilding and a #fairytale flair I last encountered in The Forgotten Beasts of Eld by McKillip.

(Why do I do this to myself, again?)

This is a low pick for me.

It was a pretty decent #BlueBeard retelling, but I wanted more from it. The villain was a bit wishy washy, the world building needed a bit more explanation, and I didn‘t feel for any of the characters really.

The premise was good though, and it was an easy read!
15 year old Rhea finds herself betrothed to a lord, and discovers that not only is she not the only wife, but they are trapped.

Mehso-so

I loved Oyeyemi‘s BOY, SNOW, BIRD & this one has been on my TBR for a while. But I think there was something lost in the audio version… while the performance is solid & there‘s entertaining elements within, it just felt very disjointed. I never connected with the characters & the #BluebeardRetelling was present, but rather loose at best. I just feel like I probably would have enjoyed this more with a physical copy with clearer transitions.
