I finished my final tome for #ChunksterChallenge2023 just under the wire: late on New Year‘s Eve! This has been waiting on my TBR since a long-ago library book sale in grad school days, & I‘m glad I finally read it.

It follows the history of London (naturally), beginning in pre-Roman times and finishing with a brief epilogue set in 1997 (the year the book was published). Rutherfurd follows several fictional families through each subsequent era.⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) It was fascinating to see their fortunes rise and fall against the backdrop of familiar and not-so-familiar historical events—and to root for or against certain individuals based on grudges built over generations. One of the things I enjoy about Rutherfurd's vast narrative is the way he incorporates little Easter eggs: objects or character traits or events that pop up in early chapters and are then referred back to later in the narrative. 2mo

Amiable Yay! Great job! I read that book a number of years ago — Rutherfurd does a good job with the sweeping epics that span centuries. I have this one of his still in my pile: (edited) 2mo
BarbaraJean @Amiable Yes, I'm so impressed by the amount of research that must go into each of his historical epics--and he makes it so engaging. I have another one of his in my pile still (tagged), but I'm going to take a little chunkster break for a couple months! 2mo

The question for today: will I finish the last 100 pages of this 829-page tome before midnight? I think yes. Stay tuned. #ChunksterChallenge2023

AnnR Good luck! 3mo
Amiable Not sure what time zone you‘re in but my money is on “yes!” 😀 3mo

I am not a big reader of chunksters but I did complete a few for #ChunksterChallenge2023 !! Most are consider Almost a Chunkster, but Middlemarch qualified as a legit Chunkster, and The Pickwick Papers was awfully close!! 😂 I am also on page 860/1024 in Don Quixote, so that Super Chunkster will be checked off in early 2024!! Thanks for hosting @Amiable !!!!

julieclair In my opinion, anything over 500 pages is a chunkster. 🤣🤪 Great job on reading all of these! 3mo
GinaKButler Awesome job!! How was The Pickwick Papers? 3mo
Amiable FABULOUS JOB! Good on you! 🎉👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 3mo

TheAromaofBooks @GinaKButler - I loved it!! It was hard to get into at first, but once I got the characters sorted, I just thoroughly enjoyed Dickens's humor and some of the ridiculous situations. 3mo

Starting to work on my year-end wrap-up!

I read 4 chunks this year…1 had over 700 pages, 1 had over 800 pages (but felt like a lot more) and 2 had over 1,000 pages!

Q1: Alexander Hamilton
Q2: Les Miserables
Q3: Hawaii
Q4: The Woman in White

Thank you so much to Amy for hosting the #chunksterchallenge2023 📚

I just finished ordering our 2024 picks!

Thrillers is one of my favorite genres and I really enjoyed this one. As many thrillers, there are some unrealistic events and other in some way predictable but this was a fast read. This is about a girl 2who goes missing during the Macy‘s Thanksgiving Parade. After 8 years parents receive a VHS where her daughter appears in a room playing. The story goes from there. I want to go blind in my thrillers. I haven‘t watch the tv series yet⬇️

Gissy I will like to read the second book first before watching the series or movie, something like that. 3.8⭐️

TheAromaofBooks Yay!!! Fantastic month!!! 4mo
Amiable Super! I'm working on an idea for a different challenge. I need to clear the medical history books off my shelves. I'm thinking of doing a #DiseaseoftheMonthBookClub for 2024. 😃 4mo
GinaKButler @Amiable Well, that sounds like something different! 4mo

I‘m excited for the #NovelNovember readathon! It falls at a perfect time, since I‘m taking next week off work, and my only plans are reading and Thanksgiving prep! (And working on a never-ending freelance project, but I‘ll worry about that later 😬)

Goals:
📚Start/finish the two on the left for #LMWBR and #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead
📚Finish the two in the middle
📚Continue the two on the right for #RandomClassic and #ChunksterChallenge2023

Andrew65 Perfect timing, best of luck. I really need to get back to the Edward Rutherfurd books. 4mo
BarbaraJean @Andrew65 Thank you! His books are definitely a commitment. Sarum is the only other one I've read, and I remember really liking it (but that was nearly 20 years ago!). I also have The Forest waiting on the shelf. Hopefully there will not be 20 years between reading London and reading The Forest. 😂 4mo
Andrew65 I read Dublin and the Rebels of Ireland which I really enjoyed. I own Sarum, Paris, New York and The Forest, and really need to get to them. As you say they are massive undertakings. 4mo

Well, this was a pretty long book. It took me a while to figure out what was happening, but once i got into it, it was good. There is a lot of layers in this book. Now, to watch the movie. It was Chunkster #ChunksterChallenge2023 with 875 pages on Libby. @Amiable It gave me one more spot on #NovemberISpyBingo @Clwojick @TheAromaofBooks plus #RushAthon @DieAReader @Andrew65 @GHABI4ROSES

I did it!🎉 It only took 10 months 😅. The beginning was great, it drug in the middle, but the ending wrapped it all up so well! I don't know if I can enjoy the movie anymore now that I know the true ending. My advice to others- keep a character list handy at all times!
