The Dead Zone | Stephen King

Pickpick

This is our February selection for the Constant Reader book club. I‘ve watched the original 1983 movie adaptation multiple times and first read the book in 2015 as an audiobook. This time, I decided to read my physical copy. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it again and liked it better the second time.

Soscha Is Constant Readers a local or online club? Just curious, behind one indeed! 6d
LoverOfLearning Finally read my first ever Steven King bookm Started with Misery was pretty good! Any recommendations for my next read by him? 5d
NatalieR @Soscha It‘s a local, in person book club. Here, you may want to check out #losersclub #constantreader 5d

NatalieR @LoverOfLearning Misery was my first King book too! 😃 Glad you liked it. The Shining is one of my favorites. 5d
Soscha An online King Constant Reader group is doing the second Dark Tower book. I‘ve not read the first yet though. 😓 5d
sarahbarnes I liked this one too when I read it. He has some really good ones. 4d
LoverOfLearning @NatalieR that's funny! 💯 love that. That's a long book huh! Maybe I'll read it ! 4d
NatalieR @Soscha The Dark Tower series is quite a commitment. The first book was tough for me to get through. The rest were really good though. 4d
NatalieR @LoverOfLearning It‘s not too long. It‘s engaging and suspenseful. 🤓 4d
Soscha I read the Dead Zone some time ago. It‘s logged on my Goodreads but I didn‘t leave a written review. Is this the one with an insane POTUS candidate? Damn good but way too close to reality at this point in history, if I may say. 4d
NatalieR @Soscha 😅 Yep, that‘s it! While reading it, I kept thinking how It‘s VERY close to our reality. 4d

King famously disliked the film adaptation of The Shining. Having seen the movie several times, I guess I can see his dissatisfaction, but I think Kubrick did a good job. The book is different enough that I got well caught up in the suspense. Very good #constantreader #losersclub

BarkingMadRead The movie is really good, the miniseries is closer to the book, but not nearly as good! I‘ve also noticed that whenever King is involved, the movies tend to be a little campy. When he‘s not, they are way creepier, and way better IMO 3w

bthegood I will be jumping in this month and I'll be listening to “Stories for Night Shift“ so I'll be “reading“ about 5 of the stories - it is the perfect audiobook this month. Thanks for hosting. (edited) 3w

Bookwormjillk One of his best I think. I love a haunted hotel. One of these days I'm going to read this and Dr. Sleep back to back. 3w
Karkar @Bookwormjillk that is a good idea! 3w

BookwormAHN This is one of my favorites 🖤 3w
kwmg40 One of my favourites too. I loved the haunted hotel setting. 3w
AnishaInkspill I really enjoyed reading this one. 3w
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk that‘s a really cool idea! 3w
Bookwormjillk @BarkingMadRead maybe around Father‘s Day 🔪 3w
TieDyeDude I'm late to the party, but I really enjoyed this. Usually, King really flushes out the community that the book is taking place in, but this has such a narrow scope that the few characters and the hotel itself get much more attention. 3w
BarkingMadRead @TieDyeDude yes! He usually has soooooo many characters, this was nice to really get to focus on the few involved 3w

AllDebooks I had to bail on this, too much for me, along with The Long Walk! 😱 2mo
BarkingMadRead @AllDebooks it was a lot, and knowing that he pulled it from the shelves added a little weight! 2mo

Karkar What always surprises me about this one every time I read it is back when he wrote it school shootings were not a thing. But you would think from this book he wrote it today. 2mo
5feet.of.fury Yeah, that was nuts. I can see why he pulled it after Columbine (and the continued epidemic of school shootings) with the way Charlie is presented in the end/showing the impact on the hostages as positive. 2mo
BookwormAHN @5feet.of.fury That always bothered me too. It was almost cult leaderish. 2mo
5feet.of.fury @BookwormAHN agree! Cult leader is what came into my mind, too. 2mo

Sace 🤔 I did purchase a copy back in October. Now…where did I put it? 2mo
AllDebooks I'm going to skip reading this as I read it a few months ago. 😅 2mo

Bookwormjillk Like @AllDebooks I read this one recently. I‘ll chime in on the discussion but won‘t read again 2mo
kwmg40 I'd read this a number of years ago and recently watched the movie for the first time, but I'm up for a reread in January. 2mo

5feet.of.fury I found a link on Reddit where you can read the full book online which I would never officially advocate for, but I know this one is hard to find. So, just putting it out there. Happy googling to those impacted (edited) 3mo
BarkingMadRead @5feet.of.fury I feel like if you could buy the book but read it that way, that would be like taking money from the author. But if the book isn‘t available for sale 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3mo

5feet.of.fury @BarkingMadRead yeah, I‘m gonna hit up a couple of the used bookstores near me (on the off chance they don‘t know what they have, because wow those prices) but it‘s my backup plan. King has alot of my money 😂 I‘ll sleep ok this once haha 3mo
JenlovesJT47 You can also download it for free here, since it is unavailable for sale: https://annas-archive.org/md5/47f228955fd87588ff9965f1e5cc92cb 3mo
TieDyeDude @5feet.of.fury @barkingmadread King has specifically let “Rage“ go out-of-print, so read it wherever you can find it with a clear conscience! https://screenrant.com/stephen-king-rage-book-out-print-controversy-explained/ (edited) 3mo
BarkingMadRead @TieDyeDude yes, that is correct 3mo
ImperfectCJ I know my mom has a copy of The Bachman Books, but she's 2000 miles away and not at all keen on splitting up her King collection, even temporarily. I'm probably skipping this one for now, although it would be interesting to read again with the context of a few decades. 3mo
