All of her most important values -- love, loyalty, integrity -- are being stomped on constantly by this woman and her father just aims for a peaceful life. It's a bit of a Cinderella story except with no way for anyone else to see it if they don't want to. 7d

Bookwormjillk I loved this one as a teen. I used to sit with my friend Amy trying to set things on fire with our minds for hours. It was the super power I most wanted to have when I was about 13. I still liked it on this re-read, but I thought the middle dragged a bit. Not a bad ending for King.

Also I think the first season of Stranger Things owes this book a lot! 2w

TieDyeDude @5feet.of.fury I found I liked this more than Carrie. I don't remember The Institute enough to compare. But, yes, it was just really neat. As much as I love when he takes the time to build a town and it's inhabitants, with this and The Shining, I'm liking his more narrowly focused stories. 1w

TheAromaofBooks I honestly feel bad for the squire. While he may not be the brightest, I do think he genuinely loved his wife and feels completely lost without her. He's grieving so much and I think he's turning some of that grief into anger at Osborne - it's pretty natural to want a target when you're sad like that. But I do think Osborne is dumb for keeping this all a secret. How can things get worse by telling him?? 3w

willaful @Bookwormjillk I don't think I've seen enough of Cynthia to make that argument, though it won't surprise me if it turns out to be true. Cynthia seems pretty shrewd and it's hard to believe she has no idea Molly is developing feelings for Roger.

The omniscient narrator is generally very kind to Cynthia and I'm not sure if we're supposed to believe it or not. 3w

I was reminded of the mom in Lark Rise. I guess discouraged intellectual curiosity was a common theme for women writers.

The prose was pretty amusing in this chapter. I liked the allusion to “echo answers.“ 1mo
