The secret is safe with Frank, who knows Rebecca's type, her evil, manipulative ways. TheAromaofBooks @willaful @5feet.of.fury - I definitely think it's a strong reaction to how horrible his life was with Rebecca who was “worldly,“ a serial cheater, into drugs, etc. His response seems to have been to find someone as “innocent“ as possible and his fear is that as she learns more of the world she'll become another Rebecca. I think his hellish time with Rebecca has left him unable to see that genuine maturity between two reasonable people leads to ⬇ 2d

His experience with women seems to be on a “knows nothing“ to “loves to do drugs, sleep around, and rub it in her husband's face“ scale, so while the whole “she needs to stay innocent“ thing does come off kind of creepy, I think he believes he's protecting both himself and the narrator, rather than holding her back. 2d

Crinoline_Laphroaig This is where I lose any sympathy I had for Jan. It doesn't matter Max is a murderer, what's important is HE DIDN'T LOVE REBECCA! She becomes a bit like Rebecca in that she doesn't care about anything except what she wants. I could see her going over the edge in later years and murderibg Max because she thinks he doesn't love her enough. 4d

Ruthiella All I can say is keep reading folks! I have my own ideas about Rebecca‘s motivations. I also noted Jan‘s primary focus now of being truly loved and I think I would have had the same blind obsession at 21 or 22. (edited) 4d

But I agree. If she wasn't so cocky with her evilness. I am sure Max would have had no choice but to get divorced from her eventually. But, she was slipping up so much, it was going to all come out what type of person she was eventually. 4d

daena The fact that Danvers lays it all out there with zero shame and a whole lot of obsessive crazy makes it that much more terrifying. It's like she has nothing left to lose because she's already lost Rebecca. 6d

dabbe I remembered this scene because of the movie. If you‘ve never seen the 40s version, you should. The pic posted by @BarkingMadRead says it all. It won best picture in 1940, and Olivier, Fontaine, and Anderson (as Danvers) were all nominated for their acting roles. Judith Anderson is absolutely chilling as Danvers. 😱 6d

dabbe To me, this feels like the climatic chapter, where the narrator is at her lowest point. Even though she starts of facing Danny, Danvers overwhelms her with her #rebeccarebeccarebecca crap, and Jan descends into darkness, even ready to jump and commit suicide. Then, BAM! A deus ex machina to break the trance of Rebecca with the explosion going off. If that hadn't happened, Jan would have jumped. But of course, there's more to the story ... 🤩 6d

dabbe I, too, want the narrator to snap back and have a backbone, but she just doesn't. She's terrified of Danvers (and even Maxim at times) and is so UNSURE of herself that she can't fight back. Max wanted her as Alice in Wonderland--fiitting since Alice is a complete innocent, not worldly like Rebecca or Caroline de Winter. The irony is, though, that Max is primarily responsible for Jan's loss of innocence. #sosad 😞 7d

I have been reading Jenn McKinlay‘s cozies for years, and this is my first time reading a book of hers that isn‘t a cozy mystery. This story had me from the start. I love books about Ireland, so I was excited from the first page, and this did not disappoint. The storyline was so much fun, the live hate relationship between the MC and the FMC was done so well, so of course they would end up together. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

TheAromaofBooks This line really struck me, Maxim is talking: “Fancy not getting a hold of her when you broke the thing and saying, 'Here, Mrs. Danvers, get this mended.' “ This is just so typical of Maxim's perspective. He is used to servants/commands/obedience (and it sounds like Rebecca was as well). Our narrator is uncomfortable with even the concept of giving orders (we saw this when she was in Monte Carlo as well) or making demands. I think Maxim can't ⬇ 2w

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) get his head around anyone being shy of or intimidated by servants. I do feel bad for the narrator, but I honestly frequently have similar feelings to Maxim's - YOU'RE THE BOSS so step up!!! On the other hand, Maxim obviously is blind (intentionally?) to the narrator's need for some guidance and suggestions on what she should be doing, and completely leaves her hanging. 2w

Clare-Dragonfly @TheAromaofBooks Yes—it‘s similar with the socializing; he insists that it has nothing to do with being brought up to it, but that‘s because it‘s been his world for his whole life and he doesn‘t realize how different it can be for Jan. I think Clarice‘s mother quite likes her and it was nasty of him to say it was an insult! But also, anyone else think of Darcy and Lizzie when Maxim complains that Jan is shy and won‘t try to socialize? 😆 2w

ElizaMarie This chapter gutted me. Poor Jan! She almost speaks up then quickly backs down and worried about Maxim‘s feelings over hers. Poor baby! Also —- she should redecorate the whole room! I feel like she was hinting at it but needs Maxim to suggest (the order the staff) to get it done. 2w

dabbe I keep reminding myself that the shy-can't-do-anything-without-approval Jan is in the past. The narrator is our future gal who seems (in my mind) much more forthright than the flashback Jan. She's her harshest critic who is looking back on herself in the cruelest of ways. I have hope for her. And Lord Byron ain't got anything next to the brooding Maxim. #hyperbyronichero 2w

peanutnine It's crazy how everyone just acts like she should know her way around the house and all the routines. I guess they assumed Max told her ahead of time? She definitely needs the courage to speak up and ask questions 2w

Crinoline_Laphroaig This is where I start to really dislike Max. He just dumps her in the house, doesn't bother to even show her around, and he knows Evil Mrs D is manipulative. Also he acts like he's so busy running Manderley but he's been gone for WEEKS. And it not like today when you can keep in touch by email and smart phones. I'm quite sure Manager of the estate doesn't need his help. 2w

ElizaMarie I had to look up the plant (ha!) I thought I knew what it was, but I wasn't 100% sure. Anyway, I can't tell if Mrs. D wants her to be more arrogant like the old Mrs or um.. what? It sounds like Jan is way more easygoing and could be easier to “serve“ under but instead, they keep bullying her. And shame on Max, he knows Mrs. D is difficult but.. yet doesn't even show her the after-breakfast room!? 2w

Why would it be embarrassing to ask where that is?? I always feel bad for the narrator when I read this book, but also spend about half the time just wanting to shake her and tell her to stop assuming the worst about everything! 2w

TheAromaofBooks One of the things that always gets me with this book is how much of what we are reading does NOT happen - we are constantly getting scenes from the narrator's imagination, things she can see happening but aren't actually reality. The entire section of seeing herself saying goodbye to Max, seeing herself going to New York, seeing herself being introduced to boys there - it's like we read the real story but also the parallel possibilities. 3w
