Cuilin Interesting how Wharton still refers to May as May Welland and not May Archer or Mrs Newland Archer. 🤔 Why did May blush so? (edited) 18h
TheBookHippie @Cuilin Good catch! I wonder why now too! 17h
lil1inblue @Cuilin I didn't even clock that... Intriguing! 🤔 16h

Clare-Dragonfly Newland seems to expect they‘ll have children but if May‘s features are still “virginal” at the end of their honeymoon I‘m not so sure 😬 1d
Cuilin @Clare-Dragonfly yeah the “virginal” and the “6 months” has me 🤔 1d
Cuilin @ElizaMarie Yeah, this is literally the honeymoon!! There‘s a reason we say “the honeymoon is over” to denote the challenging times are next. 🤔 1d

ElizaMarie Oooo the aunt is on the hubby‘s side??? And Archer rather see her dead, than back in her marriage!? 🤔 5d
willaful Ellen is punishing Archer, I think.... 5d
TheAromaofBooks Okay, so do we all think Ellen is as innocent as she acts? I keep wondering if she's pushing Archer's buttons on purpose. Everything she says/does seems like the EXACT thing to keep him interested. 4d
ElizaMarie @TheAromaofBooks oh I definitely agree! She is totally manipulative and calculating with every move she makes! I think she knows exactly what she is doing. 4d

ElizaMarie Loved all the shenanigans. It felt so out of place! ==== I caught up!!!! Now I am back on #ChapterADay 6d

lil1inblue Archer wants to kiss Ellen's ribbon. 🤣🤣🤣 I can't get that out of my head for some reason. Also, I had to look into the symbolism of yellow roses. Apparently, in the Victorian Era they were associated with jealousy and betrayal. 🤔 1w

mcctrish I laughed out loud at archer wants to kiss Ellen‘s ribbon @lil1inblue that is serious code for kink 1w
lil1inblue @mcctrish OMG. I did not even realize what I said. 🙃🙃🙃 But I guess it fits, too. We know what Archer really wants. 🤣🤣🤣 #ithasbeenalongday 1w
Clare-Dragonfly Did he get her to drop the divorce??? They keep saying “I know what you mean” “you know what I mean” and I am concerned they‘re talking about total opposite things. 1w
Ruthiella @Clare-Dragonfly I am also unsure if they really communicated there. Archer takes her silence for an admission of an extramarital affair. But what if she was just being quiet? 1w

mcctrish I think Ellen had an affair, Beaufort gives big creep factor 1w
julieclair Sounds like Ellen has a scandal or two in her own past. Can‘t wait to find out the juicy details! 😎 1w
See All 18 Comments
Cuilin @mcctrish Beaufort has designs of his own I fear. 🤔 1w
Cuilin “… bursting with the belated eloquence of the inarticulate” anybody else have “belated” conversations in their head? 1w
Bookwormjillk Popcorn time. Can‘t wait to see how this plays out. 1w
mcctrish @Cuilin I have most of mine in the shower but middle of the night works too 1w
Cuilin @mcctrish same. 🤦‍♀️ 1w
dabbe @Cuilin More than I care to admit. 😂 1w
willaful I think Archer is in kind of fascinating position. He's intrigued by Ellen because she not in the “innocent maid“ trap that May is but he's also still heavily influenced by the double standards of his day. I suspect he'll end up hating himself for wanting her unless he can grow a schmecker. 1w
Clare-Dragonfly I‘m so confused by his comment about the State not liking Ellen‘s plans. Was it illegal then to marry an affair partner? Or to remarry after a divorce? Neither makes sense to me, but maybe the first a little more. 1w
nanuska_153 I am a lawyer and I got really excited when he got the file, to then realise that I wasn't going to read the file and get disappointed for not reading the details 😅 1w
lil1inblue @nanuska_153 I love that. 😅 🍿 1w
lil1inblue @Cuilin So many belated conversations. Like @mcctrish said, the shower and the middle of the night are, of course, the best time to have them. Also, in the car on the way to work. Because you gotta start the day right. 🤣🤯🫠 1w
mcctrish @lil1inblue absolutely start the day strong 🤣 1w
ElizaMarie @Clare-Dragonfly - I was wondering that too. If you can't remarry with the person you had an affair with ... imagine how many people wouldn't have 2nd marriages (in today's cynical world). But also, wonder who she had an affair with? It has to be someone we know? 7d
Clare-Dragonfly @ElizaMarie I don‘t think it‘s someone we know—Archer has referred a couple times to her husband‘s secretary who helped her escape. He thinks that who she had the affair with. 6d
ElizaMarie @Clare-Dragonfly ooo yes that's true!!! I had forgotten about that! 6d

mcctrish Women should be free like men, but not actually free if it means being ‘unpleasant‘ 2w

dabbe Lordy, I can just stare at this pic of DDL all day long. #theperfectarcher #theperfectanythingforthatmatter 2w
BarkingMadRead @dabbe he really is delightful looking 😍 2w
TheAromaofBooks I actually don't think Archer is a bad dude (at this point) - he's just always thought what he's been told to always think. And actually we see glimpses of him wanting something more with May - hoping that she will enjoy travel and discussions, but frustrated because she's always been told that she shouldn't enjoy those things. I feel a little bad for him, even knowing I'll probably end up despising him later 😂 2w
willaful @TheAromaofBooks I feel the same. Admittedly the bar is low, but he's not the worst. 2w
Clare-Dragonfly Wow I hate this. If there‘s no difference whether she gets the divorce or not why prevent her from getting a divorce?!?! And deliberately putting the one guy in the firm with a connection to the case on it? Talk about a conflict of interest (that wouldn‘t exist if they were only looking at the legal aspects of the case). I will never hire them, that‘s for sure! 1w
eeclayton @TheAromaofBooks @willaful I feel the same, too. I think it's the first time in his life when he really starts questioning things. 1w
willaful @eeclayton yes, and many people in his situation never get there. 1w
eeclayton @willaful So true! 1w
ElizaMarie This chapter made me value Archer. Although he agrees divorce is unbecoming, I praise him for not wanting to fully speak on this until he speaks with Ellen first. I love that it appears he cares for her thoughts on this matter (unlike her whole family!) 7d

Cuilin Oh, this is going to be good!!!! I already just love the tone. 3w
kspenmoll Now I must watch the movie- after the book is finished! 3w
Bookwormjillk This is going to be fun. I have that Don Henley song in my head though. 3w
JacqMac So pompous. This made me want to watch the movie. She sure hit us with a lot of characters in that first chapter though. 3w
lil1inblue @Cuilin The tone is fabulous. 😘🤌🏻 3w
ElizaMarie @JacqMac so many characters!!! I'm already lost but —- intrigued ♥️♥️ 3w
mcctrish Merchant Ivory goodness ❤️❤️❤️ 3w
Clare-Dragonfly Well, I can‘t stand Newland Archer already, but I guessed that by his name 😂 3w

julieclair Like @Cuilin , one chapter in and I‘m loving it already! 3w
KAO This first chapter immediately reminded me very much of “The Gilded Age” (drama series)! (I haven‘t seen the newly released season, but the first one was quite good.) 3w

willaful SO MADDENING! How did we not know this?! I wanna see Molly happy! I wanna see Dr. Gibson slough off NotClare somehow! I guess we can watch a filmed version to get some kind of closure.. 3w
Bookwormjillk So I'm guessing she died before she finished? Too bad. Still liked this book but kind of melancholy over the ending. The characters were great in this one. 3w
peanutnine Yes I was so surprised at the abrupt end of the last chapter! But my version had an afterword that gave details about where Gaskell planned to go with the story before she died, so it was nice to know Molly gets her happy ending @mcctrish @willaful @Bookwormjillk 3w
Ruthiella @peanutnine My book had this too. It does have a HEA! 3w
Bookwormjillk @peanutnine my book had that too but it wasn‘t really clear where the information came from. But there was something about Cynthia‘s new husband being like “Wait you know Rodger???” and I got a kick out of that. 3w
eeclayton I had the afterword, too. But even without it, Mrs Gaskell set up the HEA nicely, and she was no Charlotte Brontë to kill off Roger somewhere in Africa 😂 3w
mcctrish @peanutnine mine had the afterward and thank god - I really was in a panic with how much book there was left and how much story there was to tell - but it felt too abrupt. All this ongoing story ( especially #notclare with her long winded double speak) ending with “dear reader, Roger married Molly. The end” 3w
Ruthiella @eeclayton OH MY! ??? I she had pulled a Charlotte Brontë trick like the end of Villette? ? 3w
peanutnine @eeclayton I am SO GLAD she didn't!! @mcctrish I agree, it was abrupt and I wanted all the details like we got for the whole rest of the story! I'm sure it would have been much more satisfying 3w
ElizaMarie Yes!!! Actually if I had knownn- I probably would have skipped this book because it irked me soon much!!! 3w
Clare-Dragonfly Sooooo, some of you didn‘t know that Gaskell died before finishing this book 😅 I have the edition with the ending written by her publisher but I was saving that for tomorrow! 3w
Bklover Well, I am glad for the HEA, but I would have loved to have seen Cynthia have children and love them madly! 3w
Lcsmcat @peanutnine That‘s how my edition handled it too. Still disappointed that we didn‘t get to see how Gaskell would have gotten us there. 3w
AnnCrystal @PageShifter is having the same difficulty with images. 3w
Bookwormjillk Forgot to say thanks @BarkingMadRead 3w
dabbe I‘m in the minority, but I liked how it ended with both Molly and Roger seeing one another, saying nothing, but knowing where their hearts were and where their future lay. To me, their souls said more to each other than their spoken words ever could. Thanks for hilariously leading us again, @BarkingMadRead. 😍 3w

mcctrish Aimee better hang on, that house needs a woman in it 1mo
Cuilin @Bookwormjillk he certainly wants the boy but not his mother. Worrying. 1mo
Ruthiella The assumption that Aimee will be willing to leave her child is troubling. 1mo
julieclair How the Squire can just assume he has a right to keep the child and send its mother packing is beyond me. 1mo
dabbe How quickly the squire can also be like, “Oh, look, it's Osborne's mini-me! I'll love him like I never loved Osborne, and we'll just forget about where is mother came from.“ Seriously, the way these people cling to their heritage and family name is infuriating! 1mo
willaful @julieclair Horrifyingly, he might. In that time and place, he has everything going for him and she has nothing.

Molly is relying on her father to solve this problem but I bet he's going to let her down yet again.
1mo
Lcsmcat @julieclair Legally, in that day and age, children belonged to the Father. It kept many a woman in a miserable marriage to avoid losing her kids. 😔 1mo
