Bear: A Novel | Julia Phillips

I assume this book is a metaphor for domestic abuse? If I look at it through that lens I like it ok. If not, then I really didn‘t. Characters are irritating, whole story line is boring, nobody evolves. I wish the bear was interesting in some way. If you don‘t want to read it, the mom dies and the sister gets eaten by the bear 🤷‍♀️. To be honest, I legit lol‘d at that second one 😆

I really enjoyed this book which is written by a surgeon. I loved reading about the personal experiences and perspectives of this surgeon which were bursting with detail, pure honesty and emotion. I look forward to reading another book by Dr. Ruggieri.

This book definitely lived up to the buzz. Elena‘s daughter has been found dead, and she doesn‘t believe it was suicide. In a single day, despite her Parkinson‘s, she traverses the city to the only person she believes can help. I do not want to give too much away, but it is a stinging indictment of the church and attitudes towards women, who holds control and the attitudes and hate women internalize. Definitely reading more Pineiro!

Juniper Berry has grown up deep in the wilderness and knows almost nothing of modern conveniences. Instead she knows how to hunt and forage to survive with her family. Then, her brother becomes acutely ill, and the whole family travels to the city. Suddenly, she has to learn a whole new set of rules while living with an uncle she didn‘t even know existed and cousins who don‘t want her there.

4.5/5 🌟

A gripping and honest story about a mother seeking answers after her daughter's death. It explores themes of religion, free will, motherhood, and illness with powerful, candid writing. A deeply moving and well-crafted book.

Night_Reader @Tamra It's a great book. I have to read her books. 3w
Tamra @Night_Reader the others I‘ve read are good, but there is something particularly riveting about this one. I think it‘s the propulsion given by the time restrictions. 3w

4 ⭐This book is hard. It‘s about a child that continuously spends a lot of time in the hospital. And how they feel going between the hospital and regular school. How they feel they have to keep things separate or be like other children and try to forget their hospital time. But the story is useful. First off, the note from the author in the beginning about hospital kids being a little different and needing the public to understand that things

LibrarianRyan are different for them is lovely and tearjerking. In the story of the character finds that it‘s OK to have different experiences. It also teaches others that you should be aware of those experiences and not afraid but willing to try new things. 3w

My June pick for #12booksof2024 with @Andrew65 I actually listened to the audiobook with a friend. Her class was reading it and she wanted to read it ahead of time. Long car ride from Florida to SC meant we listened to most of it, and I finished it at home. So so good!

Andrew65 Sounds a good read. 3w
