Looking for Alaska | John Green

This has been in my TBR for so long and I wasn‘t in a rush to read it because I heard it‘s very similar to Paper Towns. But I‘m glad I did, I actually liked this one better! This coming-of-age story is both funny and sad, silly and deep. Quintessential John Green.

Wil Wheaton‘s narration was awesome, as usual.

Cinfhen Yay!! It feels good to get that bottom book off the (virtual) shelf!! 3y
Curiouser_and_curiouser I also recently read this book as well as Paper Towns. And yes, they do have a similar feel. I have The Fault In Our Stars on my shelf and that might be it of John Green for me. I think I needed to be much younger to thoroughly enjoy them. 3y
Jovy @Curiouser_and_curiouser I get what you mean! Fault is still his best book in my opinion. 3y

I was not prepared to be so affected by this book! My first Atwood and I must say I am impressed. It‘s disturbing and sad and totally plausible. It‘s the female version of 1984, and being a woman, this hits closer to home.

Cinfhen I agree, this book was SO GOOD!!!! 3y
SamAnne I just finished rereading--it has been years and years--in conjunction with reading the sequel The Testaments. I had forgotten just what a brilliant classic it was. I loved the set up of it being a story handed down and read in the future--highlighting the need to bear witness, tell your story as an act of protest and for those who come after. And I love Atwood's introduction in the new edition. Highly recommend the Testaments ! 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage This really is a classic now. Unlike @SamAnne I didn‘t like The Testaments nearly as much. But it‘s worth knowing the next chapters in the story. 3y
Jovy @SamAnne @BarbaraTheBibliophage I was debating if I should dive straight into The Testaments or if I should savour this first 😀 3y

I got 146 pages in and I can't do it anymore. I skipped to the end to see who dunnit and I'm calling it a day. The dialogue is too boring and repetitive. It was a little darker than I was expecting though.

It does count toward #scarathon2020. 66 points if I'm doing this right.

Patchshank @Clwojick since I didn't finish it does it count toward the #Scarathlon? 4y
Ruthiella Yes, one of my least favorite Christie novels since a child is murdered. 4y
Scochrane26 I didn‘t like this one much either when I read it last year. 4y

Clwojick Sure, I'm a true believer of DNFing if you're not feeling a book, and you got quite a ways in. 4y

Now I get what all the fuss was about! Such a compelling, ageless, brilliantly written book. I have never seen a more nobler soul than Atticus Finch. Great story, gripping characters. All the stars.

I should have read this earlier! This is a different take on women in wartime. Hannah has a knack for giving us stories so vivid you feel like you‘ve lived their journey. Heartbreaking, sad, oh but how inspirational!

Mehso-so

This was just meh. Started out very promising with the magic vs science concept, but the execution felt choppy and left me dissatisfied. It‘s weird enough to make me glad I read it though. 💫💫

#mounttbr2020 #bookspinbonanza I read this book for #doublespin this month. Really enjoyed this book loosely based on late 15th English royal history, complete with a magical system based on the power of water and a young boy who, with the help of some friends, is trying to escape death as a result of his family‘s treason. @TheAromaofBooks
