King Severn Argentine's fearsome reputation precedes him: usurper of the throne, killer of rightful heirs, ruthless punisher of traitors. Attempting to depose him, the Duke of Kiskaddon gambles...and loses. Now the duke must atone by handing over his young son, Owen, as the king's hostage. And should his loyalty falter again, the boy will pay with his life. Seeking allies and eluding Severn's spies, Owen learns to survive in the court of Kingfountain. But when new evidence of his father's betrayal threatens to seal his fate, Owen must win the vengeful king's favor by proving his worth--through extraordinary means. And only one person can aid his desperate cause: a mysterious woman, dwelling in secrecy, who truly wields power over life, death, and destiny.

#mounttbr2020 #bookspinbonanza I read this book for #doublespin this month. Really enjoyed this book loosely based on late 15th English royal history, complete with a magical system based on the power of water and a young boy who, with the help of some friends, is trying to escape death as a result of his family‘s treason. @TheAromaofBooks

Looks like 2 books fighting for the same characters; tighter editing would've helped. Could have been a decent 1st effort but Wheeler had at least 3 books published before this. Looking to the synopses of the next 5 books the story seems to come into its own where this book sets up the world and follows our history quite closely. Looks intriguing but I won't be rushing to read them. Irritated me but not enough to throw my Kindle across the room.

I‘m a little more than halfway through now. The writing has been choppy but with the introduction of another child and her explorations with Owen it‘s smoothed out a bit - though why anyone would willingly put their granddaughter into this food-taster/ hostage situation puzzles me.

Tower of London with the needle-like Shard behind it; I assume this is the setting.

I‘m 5 chapters in; off to a bit of a slow start with a child, Owen, as the protagonist. Kingfountain (the capital) has echoes of Tar Valon & Tai-tastigon. King Severn is a facsimile of Richard III

I read this because of the cover and I wanted to read about the queen's poisoner. Sadly it was a disappointment. It was just really boring. It was told through the perspective of an 8 year old boy and this boy thought, acted, and spoke like a 40 year old man. If you want to write a book through the eyes of a kid, then it needs to sound like a kid. The queen's poisoner was barely in it and didn't do anything. Skip it.

Johanna414 I‘ve read one of his books and felt pretty much the same way. It was also told from a young child‘s perspective really poorly 5y
NicoleCeBallos @Johanna414 I don't think anyone would really want to read a book told from a young kid's perspective, but if that's the perspective he wants to take, then he should commit to it. 5y

Has anyone read this series? The first is the tagged book and I read it as an e-book so I don‘t have the complete actual book set which annoys me but that‘s ok. 😬

mutlee I enjoyed this series. I‘ll second the G rating. It‘s a quick read. And it‘s heavily inspired by the War of the Roses. 5y

This was a fun fantasy read! Very G rated (as the main character is 8 years old) but it has a good plot, interesting characters, and some fun deception. I will be continuing Wheeler's novels in this series.

This was a Kindle First pick that looked intriguing. I loved the political intrigue. Owen who is given up as payment for his fathers treason must go to the kings court. He and the other children are tasked with tasting the food before the King. The Queen‘s Poisoner takes Owen under her wing to prepare him for the game that is to be played to save the kingdom. This is the first in The Kingfountain series.

I couldn‘t follow this story for the life of me and felt bored while reading it which is a terrible feeling as I‘m sure you know. The premise was great but this book was not what I‘d hoped it would be. #kindle #candles #bookstagram

Books.and.Tea.Please The beginning of this book is slow to start for sure! But I persisted and ended up hooked! Read all 6 books in under 4 days and officially love this series now! 6y
books.coffee.sleep @Books.and.Tea.Please perhaps I‘ll try again at some point, I really wanted to love it! 6y
Books.and.Tea.Please @books.coffee.sleep I think it‘ll be worth another try. The first book gets good halfway through (I know it takes forever but you need the early info). But after that....you will devour every book! 6y

I had actually found this book while browsing kindle unlimited and decided to read it on a whim and was not disappointed. This story is about an eight-year-old boy being seperated from his family due to war and learning that he is blessed by the fountain and has powers. This book made me want to continue on with the series. I think the character development was well done and I love Owen and look forward to seeing him grow into a great leader.

As opposed to those born to men?!??
🙄🙄🙄

I‘m going to guess that this is a cumbersome, ungracious way to say that all people are fools. 😶

julesG So we are all fools. This includes the narrator. - In a way, we are all fools, but I don't want to be philosophical this Monday morning. 6y
Elisa @julesG oh he is definitely a fool, because I have a short fuse for BS writing right now and his books were already in the gray zone... so this was enough for me to say buh-bye 👋🏼 6y

I enjoyed this book. I found it to have some holes in development, and at times it reminded me of parts of other stories, but overall I liked the main character, the concept that sometimes there is neither all bad or all good, and that family is not always what we think family should be. It has magic, adventure and intrigue.

Dragon Sounds interesting added to my tbr 👍 7y

I didn't love this book, but I think it's pretty okay. The story is kind of meh, but I may be tainted by reading Six of Crows right before this. It feels a least a little influenced by Arthurian legend, which is interesting. I liked it enough to start the next sequel.

I love the witty remarks and conversation! The pacing and story picks up in the second half of the book, but the plot twist is mediocre. I didn't fall in love with any of the characters and I felt there is not much character development for Owen, the protagonist.
