'No one can tell a story like she can' Daily Express 'One of today's most accomplished crime writers' Literary Review 'The queen of psychological thrillers' Irish Independent ____________ 'The bodies never stay buried forever . . .' On a freezing winter morning, fishermen pull a body from the sea. It is quickly discovered that the dead man was the prime suspect in a decade-old investigation, when a prominent civil servant disappeared without trace. DCI Karen Pirie was the last detective to review the file and is drawn into a sinister world of betrayal and dark secrets. But Karen is already grappling with another case, one with even more questions and fewer answers. A skeleton has been discovered in an abandoned campervan and all clues point to a killer who never faced justice - a killer who is still out there. In her search for the truth, Karen uncovers a network of lies that has gone unchallenged for years. But lies and secrets can turn deadly when someone is determined to keep them hidden for good . . . The number one bestseller and unrivalled queen of crime Val McDermid is back with her most exhilarating, breath-taking thriller yet. ____________ Praise for Val McDermid, the queen of crime: 'Brilliant . . . Sensational . . . Unforgettable' Guardian 'Compulsively readable' Irish Times 'As good a psychological thriller as it is possible to get' Sunday Express 'It grabs the reader by the throat and never lets go' Daily Mail

Well I‘ve done it again! Seems I read this book 2 years ago. As I was reading it , it felt very familiar and as I neared the ending I knew all the answers. 🙃. With so many books on my TBR shelf, it almost seems a waste of a read!
But maybe not, I did enjoy it and thought I was very clever for knowing the ending! 😊

Suet624 That‘s so funny!! 6mo
Andrew65 Yep, we‘ve all done that 🙈 6mo
Tamra Ahhhh yes, the accidental reread. But what‘s great is they are still fun! 6mo

Last weekend, I went back to Karen pirie, book 6, which was interesting after seeing the enjoyable adaptation and excellent actor in lead role, albeit not my image of the character. Here, Karen is investigating two unconnected murders while her boss hopes that it will blow up in her face. A page turner and another good outing for a well drawn character.

TrishB I‘ve not started this series yet- but have a few ready on my kindle! 11mo
andrew61 @TrishB they are worth trying, I felt the tony hill series was flagging a bit in last few but these felt fresh. 11mo
TrishB I‘ve just finished the first one 😁 and agree with comment re: Tony Hill- have another series now! 11mo

A few minutes later, they stopped outside a small café. Chevrolet jumped out, opened the back door and gestured that she should leave.
'Please, Commandant Pirie, go inside', he said. 'My boss, he is with the judge, just round the corner. He told me he will meet you here.'
'How will I know him?"
Chevrolet looked her up and down. 'He will know you, madame. You do not look French.'
And with that, he was back in the car.

An enjoyable read. I‘ve not read one of her books for some time. She mentions places that I know well in Scotland.
Was a perfect distraction and quick read. A more gentle read than some of her previous books.

I really enjoy the Karen Pirie series, and this book is no exception. A book set in February 2020, so only a few faint mentions of COVID. The cold cases featured here are interesting, and it is great to see Jason « the Mint » Murray coming into his own as a copper ?

« Karen emerged from the dystopian fluorescent gloom of the Gayfield Square station into sparkling sunshine on Leith and the rest of the city. »

(in best Proclaimers accent) ? And while the chief / put SUNSHINE on Leith ?

Loved this book, and has to be the first one I‘ve read that got Covid 19 into the book! This was a very enjoyable double plot, and was good to introduce a new character in the series and I hope she‘ll figure strongly in the future books. Bit globe hopping visiting England, Ireland, Northern Ireland and France as well as the Scottish setting. Totally recommend this series. #NetGalley
