Mehso-so

I wanted to like this story of a family and a treasured heirloom‘s place in the family‘s history that stretched across centuries, generations and geography. But the way the story was told was meandering and disjointed, with multiple POVs that sometimes went off tangent or seemed superfluous to the narrative arc.

Suet624 Did I mention already that she was here in Vermont at the Vermont studio Center and did a reading which I was unable to attend due to a dumb Board meeting. 🥴 22h
Amiable @Suet624 No! That stinks. 🙁 Have you read her first book, “Black Cake”? I have not and am wondering if it‘s any good. 22h
Suet624 No, I haven‘t read that. The VSC has artists and writers that come for residency programs and it‘s always fun to sit at the town café and try to figure out who will become famous for their work. Or who already is. 22h
CBee @Amiable I loved Black Cake! 19h

Here are some of my favorites for this time of year! They include a novel about vampires living in the NYC underground, a book about a writer‘s month-long stay in Salem over the Halloween season, a writer‘s search for evidence of ghosts, and a collection of Halloween-themed short stories!

Not my normal cup o‘ tea, but the plot ties to the American South and the enlightening look at the lesser known trades (pottery and whaling) of African slaves drew me onward. I mistakenly thought this a romance novel at the outset, but soon grasped the historical fiction supporting story arc underneath a sensitive narrative about generational trauma for black people coupled with personal tragedy and how that could shape lives.

Not my usual fare but enjoyable so far.

Suet624 She‘s speaking at the Vermont Studio center in Johnson, VT on Thursday. It‘s a 10 minute drive away from me. I‘m hoping that a meeting. I have to go to ends early enough for me to attend. (edited) 2w

New to me author, thanks to @Billypar ! B&N didn‘t have the two you recommended, but the blurb for this one is intriguing. 😄

And it‘s an Indie Publisher 👏🏾👏🏾

Billypar This sounds good - I might have to make it my next one of hers. 2mo
Cathythoughts I‘m stacking ! @Billypar we are on a Melanie Finn mission 👍🏻😁 2mo

A little disappointed in this….I thought it was a mystery about a young persons death. The novel is less about the mystery, more about how our actions impact one another. I read this book on the Libby app, it would‘ve probably been better reading in book form as it‘s told by 10 different characters. It was a little confusing remembering who‘s who and flipping through the book would have been easier.

#whereareyoumonday

While still visiting Norway and England in other books, today I am concentrating on Costal Maine, the setting of this collection of stories/vignettes by Sarah Orne Jewett, who was a writer much admired by Willa Cather.

Tamra Loved that book! 3mo
Cathythoughts I must stack 👍🏻❤️ 3mo
Ruthiella @Tamra I am enjoying it! 3mo

Ruthiella @Cathythoughts It‘s very quiet with a lot of landscape descriptions. I think I can see where it might have inspired Cather. 3mo
Andrea313 This is on my list, thank you for the encouragement to bump it up in my queue! I'm also loving these Smith & Taylor editions- so gorgeous. 💛 3mo
Ruthiella @Andrea313 You are welcome. That is not the edition I am actually reading but I picked it for the picture because it is so pretty. 3mo

#weekendreads

I have a lot going on this weekend, but I hope to at least have enough time to finish the #ohcanada pick and #EBBR and #NancyDrewBR . Those are quick ones.

I‘m reading the Sarah Orne Jewett b/c of the podcast “One Bright Book” and it takes time to digest.

The bottom two are also slower for me #hashtagbrigade and #DoorstopKristen #KLBR .

KadaGul You are FULLY BOOKED 📚🤓📚 3mo
