Let‘s try this again…I started this one in May and had to put it down. With end of school and graduation for my oldest, I didn‘t have the headspace for it. But, I love this author, so here we go again! It‘s my May #doublespin pick.

It‘s also on my #10beforetheend list.

ChaoticMissAdventures He seems to be a favorite author! You got this!! 1mo
TheAromaofBooks Enjoy!! 1mo
GinaKButler @ChaoticMissAdventures …sooooo what happens for #10beforetheend if I DNF this (again)? I‘m 215 pages in and I‘m SO bored! At this point, I feel like I‘ve given it a valiant effort! (edited) 1mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @GinaKButler that's fine!! The point is to get things off the TBR so donate it, sell it, toss it!! I am a huge advocate for DNFs. #10beforetheend is all about getting to 10 books, you don't have to finished anything. 1mo
GinaKButler DNF on page 217. (edited) 1mo

6 months later, I have finished April's #Bookspin🤦‍♀️. This is the 2nd book I have tandem-read with my husband, but it will be the last chunkster we read together. The infrequently with which he is willing to sit down and read with me dragged this one out way too long. We'll be sticking with short ones from now on 😂. I enjoy Erik Larson's books, but this one was a bit drawn out for me. Too much minutiae, but still a solid pick. @TheAromaofBooks

found Janeta to be a more challenging character and not always easy to like or connect with, but I loved her journey and growth. I did connect more with Daniel‘s character and appreciated his point of view and how he reconciled what he‘d been through. As always, Alyssa Cole wrote strong characters and a great story line.

A well researched and resonant account of the turbulent months between Abraham Lincoln‘s election and the outbreak of the Civil War. Known for his ability to turn historical nonfiction into page-turning drama, Larson delivers a compelling narrative, but this time, with an even deeper reliance on primary sources and firsthand accounts.

“The sky had cleared, the clouds raveled to tatters, and at four oclock the sun broke through, silver on the bright green of grass and leaves and golden on the puddles in the road; all down the column men quickened the step, smiling in the sudden burst of gold and silver weather.“

Enjoyed this Canadian middle grade timeslip novel from the 1980s.
After her grandmother dies, twice-orphaned Rose is sent to live with her aunt's big family in a ramshackle farmhouse on Lake Ontario. She is miserable until she finds a root cellar and travels back to the days of the US Civil War. What follows is an adventure for Rose that helps her discover where she belongs.
The book earned honours back in the day and I can see why.

I love a good satire and this is chock full of the type of smart-assery that I find hilarious. Reminded me a lot of Catch-22, but also completely original.

I also picked up some new books at the museum yesterday. I‘ve been trying to track down Combee for the last few months. I was so excited when I saw it yesterday. The other book is about the shooting at the church & Charleston & the aftermath.

TheBookHippie Oh!!! Good choices!!!! @Chrissyreadit look!!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️ 5mo
Chrissyreadit Wow!!! I cannot fathom what the depth of Harriet Tubmans brilliance is! Everytime i learn something new about her I‘m in awe!!! 5mo
ncsufoxes @Chrissyreadit I‘ve been trying to find Combee for a few months, it‘s been sold out everywhere. I was so excited when I saw it yesterday. Today we went to a bookstore in downtown Charleston & they had several copies of the book & signed 😩. So I was a little sad that I don‘t have a signed copy. I know the basic facts about Harriet Tubman, I‘m excited to learn more. 5mo
