Literary_Siren It‘s funny I should come across Oliver Twist on Litsy since I‘m at work and people are asking me “please, sir, may I have some more.” I also may be making them ask for another drink in this way. 😂 6d
sdbruening That quote comes surprisingly early in the book too! I was shocked. 6d

This book was disappointing. I‘ve loved just about every other Dickens novel I‘ve read but not this one. I didn‘t like any of the characters. It was one depressing scene or depraved character after the next. Even the ‘good‘ characters were sickly sweet. Numerous passages that seemed unnecessary. Would have stopped after page 250 but decided to power through it just to know how it all turned out.

Bookwomble I'm glad you're finding this better than you expected. That's always a bonus when you're tackling a book you're not sure about when going in. I loved Oliver Twist, and it's an important book culturally, being one of Dickens's works that brought the reality of workhouse poverty into the comfortable homes of the English middle classes. 9mo

Mehso-so

I‘ve never really liked reading ‘the classics‘. Every time I‘ve tried I ended up disappointed, or even bored. But, I keep trying, cause…well, there must be a reason they are considered classics, right? Reading Oliver Twist has not helped me to find that reason…
👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼

LittleBug It‘s a cute read, but it‘s filled with what I felt were plot holes. I‘d summarise the story as a ‘Murphy‘s Law‘ kind of heaping of bad luck, followed by a ‘divine intervention‘ kind of never ending good luck. The characters remained flat, stereotypical to me and the setting seemed surreal. I kept wondering if Dickens actually saw the world the way he described it, whether he was making fun of it, or whether that‘s actually the world he lived in…? 11mo

abandonedonearth I am a great lover of the works of Dickens, and I own his complete works. However, even if I were not engaged in full-time studies, I don‘t think I would be able to read all of it in a year. 10mo
ReclusiveHermit @abandonedonearth his writing style is amazing and you are right, its going to be hard but i will give it a try and see how much of his work if not all i can complete. 10mo

I‘m currently sitting in a café trying to read Bram Stoker‘s Dracula in preparation for my upcoming trip to Romania.

The book is excellent, but I‘m completely distracted as a woman sitting near me in the café is talking about a dozen different books with her friend. So far I‘ve heard her speak of all of Austen‘s books, Dorian Gray, Oliver Twist, and David Copperfield.

I‘m dying to introduce myself! Should I?

My first #Gilmoregirlsreadingchallenge progress report. I've read 99 of the 339 titles, or 29.2 per cent. I've been casually reading from the list for a couple of years now. As soon as I finish my current audiobook, I have Oliver Twist ready to go. I need an 'O' book for my AtoZ challenges anyway, so it'll be a twofer. 🙂 https://www.blackwhitereadbooks.com/the-official-list

I rarely re-read books but, occasionally, it is comforting to re-read an old favourite. Oliver Twist is the story of an orphan who is born in a workhouse in 1830s England. His mother, whose name no one knows, is found on the street and dies just after Oliver‘s birth. It is a great story and a grim social commentary
